  1. Devil's advocate here, I rode Dirtbikes on remote Washington single track for years, short rides were 35 miles, long rides were 90-120. If we had a major mechanical that couldn't be repaired we were spending the night (or two). Bailing wire, spare fuel hose, duct tape and some backwoods engineering got me or my buddy back to the truck more than a few times. E-bikes need to obey all non-motorized rules/laws/regs but the risk is no different than dirtbikes, in fact arguably better.

  4. ^ this I call BS on the proponents justifying these bikes as something the will give access to people with disabilities or advancing age. Every f@cking industry marketing video or ad has these e-bikes ridden by pro riders or young, athletic people. Not a older or injured person to be seen. Marketing knows that associating e-bikes with people who are perceived as weak or incapable makes them "uncool" and that is the kiss of death. Its a shame too because thats who could really benefit from them. Who their right mind is going to spend $5-6k on an "uncool" bike? Nobody, no matter how lazy they are. Rant/off

  6. No doubt, What an epic ride! It was way too humid and way too wet, but the sun came out at about 12pm and became wayyyyy too hot... and even more humid... I had a hell of a day out there.... Started the trail at 7am, wanted to get a head start on the crowd. I planned on doing only one lap but wanted to make sure that I could finish in the 4.5 hour time frame... Started off on a great pace, in the roughest part of the trail, went over the handle bars twice (damn rocks) where my front wheel planted (snipers) and did not roll forward (hate it, when that happens-- need more bike head angle). licking my wounds, headed forward, ran into many riders at this time that started from the Dam and were riding counter clockwise. I made it to the DAM, still on a 3.45 hour pace, feeling somewhat OK, but drenched from the humidity, I had plenty of water and food and some tunes to keep me going. Made it to the other side of the Dam, and thought maybe I should top off my water at Cedar Breaks park. Naw, I will be fine... (wrong).... The relentless rock gardens kept me on my toes, climbing up and around the south side of the lake really started to take its toll on me. My legs and lungs were fine, but my upper body strength was having problems (damn rocks). Had to stop at the water hole (natural springs) and cool off, chill out and catch my snap.. About this time the guys that started at 8;15AM passed me, going very fast, I thought ' how the hell can you go that fast out here??' OK ready for more of this hellish ride. I could feel the light mist of rain in between the trees, not too bad, I can do this, but the more I rode the wetter the rocks became, front tire slipping right, slipping left and in between, the mud stated to get heavy on the tires... On ward, further down the trail, I ran into the same guys that started from the dam going CCwise, they all huddled up trying to get out of the rain and rest up before the rocky hell that lay in front of them... as I past them, I thought, I am glade to not be going that way, happy that it was behind me.... but little did I know what was in front of me.... Starting to make many stops to rest and mistakes in judgement on the trail, due to the pace that I had set in the beginning. Realizing that I was not going to hit my 4.5hour goal as I was 2.5 hours in and only half way around the lake.. Fatigue was setting in and my mind started work against my body, why the hell did I think I could ride this in that amount of time???? Keep pedaling, the flats are coming up and it is all down hill from there, no more rocks... made it to the stair climb, had no gas in the tank, it took everything I could to get up to the top of the staircase pushing my bike.. Made it back down and was thinking I am home free, I can do this, Wrong, body said no way... Cramp city, started to fill light headed and ran out of water (damn rocks), but I had an ace up my sleeveless jersey, buried deep in my Camel back, I had two small packs of mustered and hot sauce from Taco Bell, also found a small bottle of Pickle Juice.... Score!!!! After resting, taking shots of Pickle Juice and Hot Sauce, I felt renewed and thinking I could do this, just a little bit more to the park to refill my water bag and then jeep roads back to the Russell Park, all went as planned, until I had to climb up from the jeep road, thru the rocks back to Russell Park. The sun was out, it was about 12pm and the heat/humidity started to get really bad....This is a short 1.5 mile trail but it took me over an hour to get thru, my body was spent, the PJ and Taco Bell special had long passed, happy that it got me this far but i needed more... I stopped at the bottom of the climbs as well as the top of each, hating all of the rocks that I hit on the way up.. my arms were throbbing in pain..... Finally made it back to the car, I lay on the ground in front of my car thinking, never again...... It took me 6 hours to complete just one lap, I have ridden this trail before, only in the Winter, never in the Summer, previous times were about 5 hours. Glade this ride is in the past and humbled by all the riders that can do one lap under the 4.5 hours time limit.. I cannot understand why anyone would want to do a second or third lap, pure hell.... Good luck to all, thank you for letting me vent....... https://www.relive.cc/view/e1191064516

So basicly its the "XX1" of fiskar loppers,

  10. I was resting at swag rock last Friday when two riders came up the bailout, both struggled with the last rock step up and had to push their bikes the last few feet. The 1st thing that was strange was they were both wearing full-face helmets, then I noticed one was riding an E-Bike...oh shit...that little voice inside my head started saying... "just be nice...Just be nice... just be nice". We exchanged pleasantries and went our separate ways. They headed East on 1/4 Notch. As I was cruising home along the BCRT when I came across the same two guys working on their bikes on the side of the trail. I stopped to offer some assistance (which they didn't need). The E-Bike rider very excitedly told me how he finished 1/4 Notch for the 1st time and he was so proud of himself. It took everything I had to not call him out on this B.S he was spewing. I politely smiled and went on my way, but in my head, I was thinking....no you didn't finish 1/4 notch, your bike did, you shouldn't be bragging about this, I feel embarrassed for you, and your lucky godirt isn't here. I can understand why some people need to ride an E-Bike, medical reasons etc but both of these guys were young, in shape, and had no visible reason to be riding an E-Bike. Are E-Bikes even allowed on County trails?

  13. Thanks for posting the Twitter feed link MrMentallo. For those that don't know me, I live on Dodge Cattle and check trail conditions as often as possible. I typically try to make it out to the actual trails to provide a report, however, like everyone else I work which means I can't always make it out to the trails to check things out. On days that I'm swamped at work or not able to get out to the trails I rely on YOUR posts on Bikemojo, here, or on Twitter to keep the feed as accurate as possible. Things were soft when I got home this evening, but we did not get more than an inch of rain near Deception so things will dry quickly. If you happen to venture out in the morning let me know how they're looking.

  19. I have a set of 3T carbon bars that got damaged due to a brake clamp not being as round as it should be. I replaced them immediately. After replacing them I tried breaking the damaged bars by hitting them on the floor of my garage and the brick corner of my house. They would not break. Once again I believe that these incidents are preceded by damage and ignorance. If carbon is failing it will usually be making noise before it happens. I had a carbon seat post on my road bike that was damaged and I wasn't aware until the post started creaking. Not saying we should ride with damaged carbon parts but carbon is exceptionally strong.

  20. I just got back from being there this past weekend. That place is awesome. You need a week to ride everything there. They're adding trail all the time and Trailforks just can't keep up. Find a local that can show you around. The town is kind of a mini-classic-Austin. Very family friendly, an emerging hipster/creative element, great food and beer, and enough retail/commercial development to keep it from feeling like a small country town. The traffic is way better though.

  21. I went. It is always labor day weekend. It is always hot . This year it was crazy hot and much hotter than Rocksprings. The near by city which was low 90s Camp eagle was 100+ (my car was 114 after the race). It is an awesome weekend on the bike between the activities and the venue. I recommend coming in on Friday and riding early in the mornings and walking up for the Super D in the afternoon on Saturday.

  22. This is exactly why I think they shouldn’t be allowed on most trails. If you’re medically incapable of getting your ass out there under your own power, what the hell happens when the E-bike breaks? Who hasn’t had a mechanical that resulted in walking pushing your bike out. What happens to the boat anchor E-biker with health issues? SAR, EMS, PD...somebody has to go get his ass is what. Then we all catch crap about being a drain on wilderness resources, city services, etc. Very bad for the sport. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  23. I’ve been OTB on this feature and all I could think of while flipping was “no collarbone breaks!”....luckily came out unscathed. Now I swing waaay left and go between rocks. I aint too proud. I wonder this as well. I’d like to know for sure before I confront anyone. I guess I’d want some kind of statute to quote...not like it’d probably REALLY matter in the end...but yeah, it would be nice for bike shops to educate people on where they can be used if they don’t already...but the only point of business at its core...make money

  25. Great write up, Eric. Sorry it was such a tough day, but if you can get through a day like that then doing a lap in cooler, drier conditions should be refreshing, right? And mad props to someone who has the guts to fuel up on Taco Bell hot sauce! Relative to earlier rides on this trail, I had a great day. This was the first time I managed to come in under the 4.5hr cutoff and it actually gave me hope that I can finish at least 2 laps in Nov. I started out riding loosely with JRider and Reuben. After JRider turned back Reuben and I tightened ranks and stuck together for full lap. Reuben is young and energetic but wasn't as familiar with the trail as I am, so he kept my pace up and I showed him some lines through some of the nasty stuff (and showed him a few lines not to follow). Carried a pretty good pace out to the dam and then stopped at Cedar Breaks trailhead for a snack. I was feeling good up til about the halfway point between CB and Tejas - that's where I started re-evaluating (for the 3rd week in a row) my choice of diet. It wasn't really a bonk, just a severe fatigue set in. I kept suggesting that Reuben ride on ahead because he was feeling fine, but he's a good guy and claimed he wasn't in a hurry (probably worried about all the explaining if I was found dead on the trail). Once we made it Tejas, I ate my last bar and we loaded up on water. I'm finally starting to appreciate that once you hit Tejas, you're really mostly done. Made it back to Russell and found the fast guys all hanging out in the shade waiting around to make sure everyone survived. Pulled up and joined them for a well earned Topo Chico. We came in right around 4hrs overall (3:30 riding time). I would like to say I considered going for a second lap, but honestly I don't think it even occurred to me. So, that's 1 week on keto that felt great, 1 week on keto that felt so bad it made me re-evaluate keto, and 1 week on a regular carb load that felt really great up until it didn't. I think the next test is regular carb load but with snacks along the way instead of just a protein bar at CB and at Tejas (Reuben, those clif shot blocks made a world of difference, thanks!)

  26. I still roll it on the far right with a tight turn in, but between the ever present scree and the leaves from that pesky palm bush, it can get sketchy sometimes. Can we consider that palm an invasive species and just remove it?

  27. Yeah I got that too, but like others, he seems to be using a very horrific experience to scare others into action. My point, which probably should have been more concise, is that nobody I've seen has presented real statistical data showing what the likelihood is of getting seriously injured due to a carbon failure. Even the author noted that he will never know what exactly caused the failure. If you employ a system of date stamping, what is the probability of failure 1 week prior to the replacement date vs. 1 week after? Guess I'm just not convinced yet to run out and replace my 2-yr old, banged up stuff, which of course will make me look really foolish if I end up seriously hurt as a result.

  29. Imma so scared, imma loosen everything on my carbon bars right now. If I go down it will because they rolled on some hard breaking on Endo Valley no cuz they got all snappy with me. To throat, I imagine the break would most likely occur landing some hella air not some other random time, but I guess Seth's broke some random time so who knows. I'm so ghetto my carbon bars are wrapped in duct tape.

  30. I'm thinking that what he was getting at is if using carbon... Check it regularly... And employ a system of buying new every two or three years... Simply because the weakness that could be in carbon parts can remain hidden, even to the most intense visual inspection (not x-ray type suff).

  31. Man I know, and the second I started down I thought about that, but it wasn’t an OTB issue, it was a didn’t see that tree and STILL not quite used to riding “wide bars”....even after 2 years. But I hear you. Hand pretty sore but healing pretty quickly. No way it can be broken, but what a SICK SLAM!

  32. I keep a piece of cut wire hanger. It is about 6 inches long and bent on each end at 90 degrees. This is because it is a PITA to hold a broken chain and fix at the saame time. Just drop the hanger piece in and let it hold each end of the chain while I repair it. Sent from my LG-LS997 using Tapatalk

  33. I've been 1 part "forgotten about" this post, and 2 parts "avoiding the topic" of this post. Part of my impetus for starting this thread was the fact that the next day (Sat 25th) I was going to make a run at what I was calling an EB Prologue. It was to consist of parking at Camp Tejas and making a lap of LGT, then riding down Parmer and doing Peddler's Pass, then Deception proper (1/4 notch & DD). From there I'd jump back onto Parmer and head to WC for completion. It was my goal to cover that distance so that I could get an idea for the distance and time to completion. This would then give me an idea of what time I'd have to begin in order to start (the night before the EB) with this route as a Prologue to the EB. I was estimating it would be about 6.5 hrs and about 60-65 miles. I WAS WRONG! I ended up having one of my worst days on the bike that Saturday while attempting to do this "EB Prologue" ride. I won't go into the details again here, much of it is summarized on my Strava post. But I ended up having to pull the plug on my day and have my wife come pick me up at 7hrs, 50 miles, and an aborted run on Deception, which was punctuated by me having to lay down in the stream for recovery. https://www.strava.com/activities/1797161605 Now that I've got some distance between myself and that day, I'm not entirely sure what my plan is now. According to my calendar, upon a successful completion of the EB Prologue (on the 25th), I am suppose to be scheduled to do a nighttime LGT lap this coming Friday. However, at this moment, I really don't plan to do that. (Let me know if any of you have a hard-on for a Friday night LGT lap and I may possibly reconsider it) But I'm beginning to think that this ENTIRE idea, doing the EB Prologue beginning at midnight before the EB as a tribute to the Enchilda Buffet's 10 yr anniversary, may just have to be my White Whale for now. I also think I may have to give out a retraction of sorts to my....the EB is completely doable with grit and determination comments earlier in this (and the other EB post). Now, in all fairness, I do still believe that. But it does REQUIRE a qualification. There is a big difference between: Wow this is difficult, I've never ridden my bike this far, I'm tired & hungry and want to go home....versus.....holy shit I'm seeing stars, my body is feeling cold (and its 100* outside), and I can no longer pedal a bicycle. Knowing yourself as an athlete, rider, person will best help you to determine these differences and thus make smart decisions on going fwd or not. The EB is designed to lead rookies into deeper waters so that they can safely accomplish something bigger than what they may have ever done. Its not designed to lead someone to health issues or (semi) permanent damage. Later, -CJB

  36. I think the scariest part of this story is that you can get a traumatic brain injury falling from a seated biking position to the ground even with a helmet on (assume of course that he was wearing a helmet). People fall to the ground for any number of reasons, breaking handlebars probably being among the least frequent causes. The reality is that MTB is a sport that can cause you to fall to the ground, or worse off the side of a cliff, at almost anytime with potentially severe consequences. Fortunately most falls result in only superficial cuts and abrasions or non-threatening bumps to the helmet. Less frequently falls result in lacerations requiring treatment or broken bones (mostly clavicles and ribs) or joint injuries (mostly AC separations). And even less frequently falls result in traumatic injuries such as what is depicted here. Of those falls resulting in traumatic, life/limb threatening injuries, my guess is that going OTB or losing control while getting air is the prevailing cause, probably even exponentially more than failing carbon parts. I only say all of this to keep things in perspective, i.e. even if you run out and replace your carbon bars today, something else has a much more probable cause for killing or maiming you whilst riding your bike.

  40. Ordered the wrong size seat post clamp - spent 2 years with a beer can shim to make it work. After an especially bad day of shifting on my 3x front derailleur, decided to go 1x. Removed the front derailleur but never got any further. Now I have to manually shift to the granny gear. Haven't bought a new bike since 2005 - I'm on my fourth replacement frame and all the bits have been replaced at least twice, but technically I bought the bike in 2005.
