Awhile back I went to every trail head in this area to look at signage and found these signs as pictured, minus the no hunting sign, at everyone of them. Notice that the signage is new-ish looking too. Meaning you must assume it to be "recent" policy. You have to be a very good internet sleuth to go through the COA Parks Department website to find where it says, "hiking only" for this area. As a matter of fact I stopped writing this post to try and find where I had found it before. I spent 10 minutes and couldn't this time. But I know it is still the policy because I had a discussion with a park police person at a meeting about it a couple of months ago. We should devout efforts into getting mtbing officially allowed there. It is almost the same size as Walnut Creek and has as good of topography. And of course we should work on getting more areas of the SATN sanctioned. And there are efforts being made towards that. I know I have said this before but our mtbing community should make golden images of cxagent to idolize for his "patience of Job" devotion to the tedious work of working with the City and other entities in accomplishing just that. In the SATN and the rest of the Austin area as well.

I'm still offended over how many times RA called hot dogs "shitty food". Sure, the Great Value franks from Walmart are not going to give the same flavor and mouthfeel of, say, a Hebrew National, but don't hate on people because they can't afford a premium frank. A well cooked Great Value weiner on a upgraded bun can be pretty enjoyable with the proper condiments. However, to mack turtle's point, there is only so much lipstick you can put on a pig - unless of course that lipstick is chili and cheese, but at that point, is the hotdog or the chili really the star of the dish? But we all know they are best on a grill

HMMMM The changes to the PARD Map and the lack of real signage make me want to take back what I said on page 9 of this thread. Instead of warning MTB'rs of what I fear is coming, I will wait until there is a problem and then tell PARD it is a problem of their own creation. They can't throw people off trails or prosecute people for doing what they appear to say is allowed.

Just what is a dirt time trial at Peddlers Pass going to be like as a racer? Read on to find out! First off, register online to skip that time consuming (and higher priced) process at the event. Show up well ahead of your race time and pick up your packet. If you are early enough you will have a chance for a sighting lap of the closed-course, 2.7+ mile, 161 corner track. Then if you have time remaining, get a few miles of warming up on the lake trail and make your final preparations. You’ll want to ride light and fast so maybe forgo carrying anything for each of your 15-25 minute laps. Then it works a lot like Enduro. You will line up with other riders in your category and race the course one at a time with at least a 30 second gap between other racers. You will finish your lap and should be able to see your time within minutes. Go have a beer and BS with your pals then get back in line and hit it again. Then once more for three total runs. Two runs for juniors. Your times will be added up and lowest aggregated time wins. We will count your fastest two laps (one for juniors) while dropping the slowest so you if you bin it on one of your laps, it’s not a podium killer. Prizes and podium photos happen soon after the final racer in your category is done with their last lap. Then the fun starts all over again for the next category of racers. Prizes: Minimum payouts for 1st place in each of the three overall adult categories is $80 cash and will cap at $160 for a sold-out event. Women score the same amount of cash as the guys. The payouts taper off down to three deep. We may be able go deeper to 5th place if the event sells out. Some folks have ponied up some donations to pay out cash for fastest Tandem bike team. All age group and tandem podiums get trophies three deep so even if you are not fast enough for an overall category win, you can still take home a trophy. After your race is over, go hit the other area trails with your pals- they are incredible. Talk more about the in race experience. :30 start gaps....is there room to pass or be passed? What is protocol? This would be my first race of this type...want to avoid rookie mistakes. Please share any other advice or suggestions. Thanks.

Rode a few bits n pieces of Deception today. Mostly to check on recent blockages and such. All are still in place that I checked. And I noticed a few more places where someone took the time to stop trail crossover by weaving branches as a make shift fence. Thanks to whomever that was. Does anyone else miss the polish dogs from Costco? They removed them from the menu sometime ago but I still miss them.

I like it. My experience has been that those screw-in brake posts can be hard to find of the manufacturer used a weird size. If anyone has something that weird, it would be YBP.

Is there a way to go beyond the "ignore posts" feature to include a "ignore threads" feature? I can ignore individual posts on a thread from a particular user, but I still see the threads that the ignored user posts. They don't need to be blocked from the site (yet). But I would like to block them from my experience on the site. 🙂 If not, no worries. I just wanted to know if it was a possibility.

"Motorized Vehicle" = Any vehicle with a motor. "Alcohol" = Any substance containing alcohol. "Pets" = Any pet animal. "Glass" = Anything containing glass. It's pretty simple.

To get a little logical on you...the sign shows a drawing of an item that falls into the category of "motorized vehicles." But it clearly states that no items in this category are allowed. Items in this category also include one-wheels, space shuttles, motorcycles, e-pogos and remote control cars and many others. Not specificity stating each item in the category does not mean that items is allowed. Now that's a good point. My favorite signs are "Human powered traffic only."

I think Job's patience is running out. Mine ran out a long time ago One of the points about making good signs and/or rules is to try to say them in a positive way. Once you start saying "NO __X___" it starts to appear anything that is not expressly prohibited is allowed. For example, this sign say "No Motorized Vehicles" and shows a picture of a Jeep. Does that mean motorcycles are allowed? Motorcycles are not shown as not allowed. What about electric vehicles? Are they motorized? Some people don't think battery powered is motorized. What about battery powered skateboards? What about battery power unicycles? What about skateboards with no power? Etc. Etc. What about horses? Are horses "pets"? Or are they "transportation"? Clearly they are not "motorized". I see both sides of this issue. I am trying to bring the sides together for some type of compromise. Hopefully, a compromise will help MTB all over the City. But I cannot guarantee it. Sometimes these things hurt us by bringing attention to the issue. Keep your fingers crossed. And maybe your toes too.

Damnit! I want to stress to everyone that the ignore feature on this forum is fantastic. Please just use it and stop arguing with people that just enjoy the sport of arguing and getting people worked up.

Most people would be far better off saving their money and buying something that does not require doubling the cost to make it not suck. If I may, this tells me a lot about our culture. People feel entitled to buy whatever they want right now and settle for cheap junk rather than save for it and buy some better the first time. Penny wise, pound poor Buy once cry once That never sinks in. There is no such thing as "cheap food" or a cheap bike. Corners are cut to lower the price, but we pay for it one way or another in the long run.

I think there are trails that are problematic, but if I could only ride on trails that are officially sanctioned by PARD, I would be moving the f outta here as soon as possible.

A rainy day sent me to the roads and gravel paths around south Austin. To my surprise and delight, I found that the unfinished new eastbound SH45 toll road has a paved bike path that goes from Escarpment to 1626. The path appears to not be officially open yet and littered with construction debris, but it's rideable. The trailhead that connects it to the VCT is under construction.

Pretty much you just continue straight like you're going to ride Windy backwards (clock-wise). But just before the trail goes into the trees, there is a 90 degree right turn. It is very well defined, but still easy to miss. The trail cuts into Windy proper just after all the muddy seeping bits.
