  2. I saw the real deal when riding in Korea once: Guy rides with his kid on the trails all the time and the kid loved it. More importantly the climbs had me wheezing, they were epic, so I am not sure how he got up with that weight behind him. Props to dad for giving it a go. Here's an example of the climbing for this trail:

  3. If one got a Toyota 5.7 for the MPG one made the wrong choice. Frankly, it's refreshing to see the LX outfitted a bit more akin to its capabilities instead of being so sterile. These things are ridiculously capable off road. I see a bullet proof Toyota that will last as long as you put forth marginal effort in maintenance and care 😉 I'm inquiring because I am considering this gen LX or LC, but have concerns with the AHC suspension of the LX.

  7. I had my last car for 18 years and never got to 85k miles. That being said, you only live once and I think that getting from point A to point B should be part of the experience. I opted for a fun car when I had to get another one and saved accordingly. Picked up a Focus RS last year and slapped my One-up on the back. Getting to the trail head is something I enjoy and when I get back to the parking lot I don't dread heading back out on the road. If you don't like driving, you're waiting for the days of autonomous vehicles or Lyft drivers so you can surf the web while you're whisked to your destination. Me, I'm using that right foot to burn some dinosaur bones and give me that satisfaction that comes with a machine doing something that you can feel in your soul. If that sounds weird, you won't get it and I'm cool with that. I know that I dread having to get an electric car for those reasons.

  8. If ya'll are going to ask about times then I'm assuming the main source would be from Strava? If so then what segment are you referring to? If its Chunky Monkey (2.8mi), then my best time is 17:02 from about 1.5 yrs ago. The best time on my "peer leaderboard" is 15:52 from John Russell (he won 24HR RHR this year). So, I think for the most part the times are legit. But I will say this though....many of those Overall Top 10 times are from 2012' (& 14') and I think the trail was a good bit faster back then. Over time the trail has evolved to become more rocky and chunky. Later, CJB

  9. Most likely not. In general strava is fairly unreliable in twistier trail systems Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

  12. To each their own , and its nice for sure but...... I see a vehicle that used to have a marginally comfortable ride/handling that has been lifted and now rides worse, handles worse, stops worse, and get even worse fuel economy.

  15. Using both a smart watch and a bike computer I've found the GPS in the watch is consistently lagging by just shy of 1/10 mile for each trail mile the bike computer counts wheel revolutions for. (measured rolling diameter used to calibrate the bike computer) A recent 15.6 mile ride on the computer indicated 14.1 on the GPS based watch app. GPS is taking points at a timed interval and calculating speed and distance. Riding more consistently on a curve or arc, instead of a straight line, actually travels further than the distance GPS calculates by drawing straight lines between the points it records. The more points per minute it takes the more accurate GPS can be. (though there can be other gains or losses inherent to GPS) Likewise, the twister the trail, the less distance than actually ridden may be recorded by a GPS based app. Straaaaaaaaaaaaaaava uploads that are based on GPS will be a more useful and accurate tool for those who spend more of their time riding in a straight line than for those riding one curve after another. YMMV (ha ha)

  16. BTW, some of those earlier top times have a missing bit of trail towards the middle third. I don't know if those folks skipped some section to get better times, or if back in 2014 the path was optional or just not as clear.

  17. It wouldn't surprise me on a singlespeed, SS is fast on trails like 1/4; when I was in decent shape I always finished faster on my SS, because you have to ride with momentum and are forced to hammer any ascents, which means you are moving much faster, and there aren't enough fast descents for it to count against you. With that said, I did some controlled experimenting with Strava a few years ago, testing consistency, cheats, etc, and it was surprisingly unreliable, especially on trails that are shorter, spaghetti-like, or have lots of switchback, tight turns and parallels; one of the reasons I didn't keep using it. It's also really easy to "cheat" on such trails.

  18. My best time is 19:57 E-W and I'm nowhere near those guys at the top as far as fitness or weight and I dismount for Sponge Bob (easily 30 seconds even with Cx dismount). I think that 13:50 from Matt Barkley is for real (you would too if you've ridden with him) and it was likely set on a singlespeed.

  21. Pretty much this^ I was a total gearhead starting in HS and built and raced cars then moved onto offroading in my 30s. I have also been in the auto industry for 28 years which is most likely why i have little patience for working on cars🤣 Bring on electric!

  30. We appreciate the work that you guys do. Also, the land mass of WC is dramatically different from BC. But, that being said, it always feels like CoA is dragging its feet on us. I pay a shitload of taxes to live in the heart of the city and it always feels like we have to fight just to get existing stuff repaired. Thank god that we have ARR on top of the situation, imagine the desert without them.

  33. I have the camelbak Palos and it definitely took some getting used to; however, I’ll never go back to a backpack unless absolutely necessary (rare for me). Loosening during rides was an issue for me in the beginning but then I bought the strap holder deals (sorry can’t remember name) and it stays nice and secure now. I carry 50oz water in bladder, pump, tube, patch kit, multitool, levers, and a snack. Sooo glad to get those damn straps off my shoulders and the pack off my back. Admittedly, I do have to adjust it slightly (just hiking up the position while riding) several times a ride but, for me, it has become second nature and the benefit outweighs any cons.
