  1. That's the great thing about our community. Different type of trail for everyone's preferences. And despite some ball busting, good dudes all around.

  2. Thanks for coming out and racing, I know it's not your thing. I really appreciate you supporting the event. I'll be at your Bandera race, what's the date again? Peddlers is an XC trail with some Enduro elements. Cornering is key, if you can rail berms and do flat corners well, you'll go fast. The problem is having to accelerate out of the 161 corners and get the bike back up to speed before the next berm/corner, that's the killer. There's only a couple of spots you can "rest" on the trail when it points downhill, but you're just about always active on the bike. Even though it's only 2.8 miles, it can feel twice that when trying to go fast, I couldn't imagine trying to race it blind. Cat mountain is no joke, most of the people at the race (me included) can't make it all the way down Cat Mountain without stopping, wrecking, or simply saying "F!@# that" and walking.

  3. I'm trying to get ready for a marathon type "race" (I put race in quotes because I'm really just trying to beat the clock and not get pulled) and I've diagnosed myself to have TRDB (training-resistant dad bod'). Been doing a 4.5-5.5 hour steady endurance ride on Saturdays and ~three days of commuting during the week with two of those days with plenty of near and above threshold efforts. Still slow AF. Oh well. šŸ™‚ The side effects of TRDB include funny tan lines, acute Spotify usage, and feelings of general contentedness.

  4. Just to be safe he should probably go with 15. I guess one of them might last 2 laps, so maybe 14 will be enough.

  5. Well, you are right on that count. vSeems that Shapiro is continually triggered by micro aggressions and turns to the court to resolve his hurt feelings. However, the whole UM story does not really fit any truth because there does not seem to be any detail to back it up. I would say that is a category of "people want to believe it because it fits their narrative, even without any evidence to back it up."

  6. Cat 3 here. Iā€™m slow as shit but my bike and beard looked great out there.

  7. Short version of the T100 (40 mile) on July 27. I'm averaging 9hrs per week. I estimate that I'll be doing well if I can finish in 7 hours. But having never done anything with this much elevation (8700 feet) at this elevation I am not sure how long it will take me. I'm sorta flinging myself at this, doing my best to prepare, and just hoping to enjoy the scenery and experience of being at a race that is run by friends and course marshalled by even moar friends, perhaps learn a thing or two.

  9. For example, lots of my old, conservative relatives were over the moon for the headline "FBI AGENT SUSPECTED IN HILLARY EMAIL LEAKS FOUND DEAD IN APPARENT MURDER-SUICIDE" in 2016, right before the election. It was reported first in the Denver Guardian. It took me ten seconds to research the Denver Guardian and point out the error, but those people did not care one bit that the article and the entire source were 100% bullshit.

  10. As a person with a education and professional background in newspaper journalism, that whole thing reeks of fake news. I admit my own bias, but sources matter. Every source is subject to some bias because they are human, but some are worse than others. Hot take: Rightwing fake news is more prevalent than left-wing fake news because more conservative audience leans older and less inclined to engage in critical thinking.

  11. Rules state that you can run as many bikes as you want. You must complete a single lap on the bike you started the lap with.

  14. Maybe there is a loophole ... are you required to use the same bike for all laps?

  15. 9hrs a week is a pretty respectable average. Since your leaving in a week, there's not much more that you can do now. But if I may offer a few tips (considering the training is all but wrapped up): -Riding in CO is centered around lots of long extended climbing. This is something foreign to us Can-Tex riders. You have to work on "finding your happy place". There is a state of mind that you get into where you are in "the (climbing) zone". You CANNOT let yourself get the negative self-talk going. You will be suffering of sorts and you need to find a way to 'enjoy the pain'. -Sorta related to the above (and all other endurance events), but you you will also find yourself in some very low (mental) places. You need to understand that nearly all of these low spots can be solved with a little time, food, caffeine, water, shade, etc.. You need to learn to ride out the (mental) ups and downs. Don't get defeated, just figure out a solution and push through enough to come out the other side. You can even convince yourself of a placebo effect [insert your own mind game here]. -Last one is important to me, and I think fairly important in most event, but maybe not in something what/way your doing this event. But I strongly encourage people to not stop too often or for too long. I prefer to "rest" while on the bike pedaling. I simply slow down and eat/drink/rest/etc...BUT I'M ALMOST ALWAYS MOVING FWD. This is good for my mind and time effort. If you stop for just 10 minutes 4-5 times you'll be adding nearly an hour onto your overall time. And I'm not concerned with placement-time, but your saddle time, eating time, effort time, etc.. Shorter is always better. Good luck, it sounds like a great event. Report back afterwards. Later, -CJB

  16. Go do 8700 feet here in Austin repeats if you get a chance. Like fontarin says, the elevation will get you, but you'll at least know you can handle the actual climbing. I've been looking at those events myself too. Maybe next year.

  17. Being at elevation will be the worst part. Not being able to breathe is always fun and exciting. Hope you have a good event and good luck! I was considering doing that but am in no shape for it right now.

  18. Just wanted to give everyone a real time visual of the progress that I/we have made at BBP Bandera Bike Park in the last 4 months and the forward building momentum is strong! the first map is what was at bandera bike park the day I got started and created a topo map of the property. the 2nd map is current. can't wait to see what this place continues to evolve into! the 7HA guys "thatcrew" have also created a trail that Is looking quite awesome as well! I just only have the top half (the green trail between the red and orange trails) added to the map and will map the whole trail and add it soon. the two baby blue lines on the right side of the current map are the single track climb trails that take you to the top of the Ridgeline and to the top of "lookout hill". the white lines are jeep roads

  20. I was doing a social ride with friends on the Drippin' Loop last year and we ran into a guy on a fattish bike fully decked out for bike touring. It was Dr. Mike McElveen, Payson McElveen's dad, doing a training ride for the Tour Divide. I don't think he did it last year, but did complete the Tour Divide route in 2013 (https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?doc_id=12850) Also, Don Schwieters (60+ Cat 1 TMBRA racers), who lives just north of Walnut Creek and rides there almost daily, completed the Tour Divide race in 2016. He also has completed the AZ Trail race.

  21. You've got it, man - I turned in 31 laps the year World Cup was the course for Final Descent (though a few of those were recovery laps on Diesel). THAT is why I couldn't care less if I ever see that trail again. You'll have an advantage with the race being in June. Final Descent was in October, so the last 2 hours or so were at night. Pretty sketchy.

  23. The missus mentioned a high school friend with a home on Lake Austin with a ski boat who recently shared how they are selling the house and moving to Pagosa Springs, CO. I suspect their home may have been one of those in the ranks of the exempted properties and they are getting ahead of the tide to avoid a major tax hit in the near future.

  24. We have some local TD celebrities right here in Central Texas. The Sheilaā€™s have both completed it, as has Billy Rice and his (then) 16 year old daughter, from over in College Station. In fact, if memory serves, Billy and Lena completed the Sobo on a tandem, and I think he then turned around and went back Nobo on his own. Our very own Hoss from Austin is planning to ride it in 2020. So plenty of blue dot tracking to come!

  26. Again, they all go back to the original "college fix.com" story. Fox is not even doing its own homework. Collegefix is associated with Ben Shapiro and calls itself "your daily dose of right minded news." (emphasis is theirs, not mine.) If this is a lawsuit then it would be public. Apparently this IS a lawsuit with Shapiro and the U: https://www.mndaily.com/article/2019/02/brshapiro So all of this stinks as fake news: 1. No actual names 2. No actual dates (other than 'fall of 2018'') 3. All lawsuits are public record and one should be able to find data fairly easily So I would say that this is not true unless you can provide some real data that ties to an actual incident with actual details. Notice how there is a VERY detailed description of the conversation but ZERO detail on the location, date, names, etc. - you know, the stuff that would exist in a lawsuit. All of this looks fake unless you can provide some actual data. Seems like the only "micro aggression" that involves the U is Ben Shapiro who is suing the school. My guess is the college fix story is a simply fabricated to help sell a narrative, not something that really happened.

  27. Then it is only a question of, will two bikes be enough? Good luck in the event!

  28. Huh. Do you have a link to this off of a normal website? Only seem to find links from Breitbart-type websites. None list a person's name (which would be in a lawsuit). Pretty sure this is fake news.

  32. This. You should try to ride trail focusing about 10-15 ft in front of you. That way you have already mentally ā€œriddenā€ the stuff immediately under you and right in front of you. Itā€™s tough to do but really works. Iā€™m decent at it until I get to a feature like EBD or something more daunting.

  33. Trick Iā€™ve found is sight in between the trees on your approach and ride straight for it rather than trying any turning. Then focus on getting your wheel over the first small ledge and second ledge in one motion rather than individually.

  34. I use my fast lap, (and only lap) to create a segment. The GPS data was not very good and it is not accurate enough to rely upon. 1. Itā€™s about exactly 20 seconds faster than the actual lap times 2. It didnā€™t pick up the winner of the race. 3. It picked up some random other people who rode on a different day. So itā€™s not accurate. I would use the lap button on your garmin or watch, or just keep using the 5.0 route which is usually ā€œpretty accurateā€ 4.0 is widely inaccurate which is while some people were heartbroken by their lack of PRs in the race. Interestingly, the top three on 5.0 predicted the fastest 3 riders in the Cat 1 race... so there is that. I would just keep practicing on 5.0 using the in and out bully the 2 boulders. Make sure you start and finish near the boulders and come all the way out if you are looking to measure your lap. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  35. Me and a buddy raced the 12hr RedBull final decent at Angel Fire back in 2010. It was as many laps was possible in 12hrs (9am-9pm). I think I ended up with 19....and my buddy did 22 (and earned himself 10th place). I'VE NEVER BEEN SO SORE THE NEXT DAY! EVAR!!! Oh and I think he'll get much more than 4 laps in before mechanical failure. I'd place my bet at 8 if he's charging.... Later, -CJB

  36. Ah, this one has been changing with erosion as of lately. I used to go right on the step, then wide around the tree on the right with sharp turn right to get over it. Now I go left on the step and more straight through the tree.

  39. Hey not so fast with the shaming man! I delivered $50 in Home Depot gift cards to Ronan on Sat during the race - $25 for @HoneyBadger and $25 for @First Blood. This was before I knew of any GoFundMe page. So although you won't see my name on the list of GoFundMe donors, please know that I pitched in.
