The industry is not even close to trying to market just the dying and decrepit...like me. They are focused on everyone that want's to put in minimal work for the maximum amount of thrill...like me. Let's face it, there's and untapped market of couch dwelling, beer drinking, ice cream addicts with massive amounts of disposable cash that if romanced with the thought, that by just laying down cash for and eMTB they can go straight from the fridge, charge up their magical electron biased miracle machine and turn Walnut Creek into Whistler downhill bike park. I have an old Wheelsmith tensionmeter I really like, and use all the time. I actually bought four Parks for work a while back and they showed up reading 40kgf different from each other. I sent them back to be recalibrated, they returned with a business card someone scribbled "a-ok" on and still had a 30kgf spread. Needless to say I can recommend that thing, unless you feel like finding a way to actually calibrate it correctly.

I've found the most important things in wheel tension are making sure all the spokes are within 5% of each other and not exceeding the max tension for the rim. I have the Park tension meter and use it every time I build a set of wheels. Tension is more important than trueness. A properly tensioned wheel will stay true longer than one with tension all over the place. Tensioning by sound is ok for me if I'm on the trail and have an incident where I need to tighten a spoke but for actual building it's not that reliable. I've always found that I over tension the wheel when doing it by ear. Park also has an app for wheel tension that's pretty cool to make sure your spokes are evenly tensioned. The tension meter can also help you determine if a rim is repairable or just complete garbage. Aluminum wheels that have been severely taco'ed can only be re trued and evenly tensioned to an extent, as for carbon once the spoke tension is removed the rim goes back to its true state and can be re trued and evenly tensioned many times.

I did zombie goat on a hard tail! It was great and I finished about where I always do just above mid pack. The one anoying thing was hearing over and over again "Oh your on a hard tail."

Think the guy that won one of the age groups at bandera was on a HT, without a dropper. I remember seeing him ride up the connector to the big hill while i was pushing my bike. Dude was an animal.

A particular spot with a small technical drop (18” with a stump and a root to navigate) followed by a challenging 3-tree treegate. As a mediocre rider I could clear it 100% of the time. It added challenge. You removed it. You suck. I hope you flat on every ride. Multiple times.

This is not unique to e-bikes. Those same two turds would have done the same thing on any bike. I know that you know that but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Total community killer. It is not productive, and calling people old that many times should have consequences.

If they get people off their couches, that is a good thing. It's getting them onto the trails that might not be a good thing. I've been passed by ebikes in places that I was not expecting it.

I think that exact same thought whenever I see a news story about someone being extracted from a park, or some Instagrammer falling to their death.

You say that until you spend $500 on a rim who's warranty will be void if it's not tensioned properly.

I’d say that the most important thing about spoke tension is consistency (precision) not accuracy. Unless you plan on swapping tension gauges after you do half the spokes on the wheel, the gauges can differ by some %. Sure, it would be great if they were all perfect and read exactly the same but do you want to pay $50 or $500 for one? Personally, I just try and get the tension near the recommended range for the spoke and then focus on getting all the spokes close to each other. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I do that a lot. I use the trails to hike with my LEASHED dogs also, so I see bad on both sides. It makes me over friendly hoping to heal some of the evils others do.

I think you should name it “Bi-Annual”. Because it’s about bicycles, and it’s annual. Too bad it’s not monthly. Then you could name it “Monthly Cycle”.
