  3. dont use training wheels. Take the pedals off and slam the seat. Have him coast down slight inclines until he has his balance (probably 1 day at his age). Put the pedals back on and have him start coasting, then pedaling. My 4yo learned over 4 days last month. All 3 of my kids have used this method.

  5. They tried to have the entrance shut down years ago. I remember the City Council meetings. Council basically said if we shut it down, you will all just create your own private entrances. I quit parking there after that. I rarely drive there, but even when I did, I would park over by Westlake High and ride over. There was also talk of a new entrance in the area you speak of, but I don't recall exactly why it got shut down. As mentioned, that is all BCP land so they aren't exactly trying to increase accessibility or impervious cover. Really, the huge problematic crowds die down once the water dries up. It is really only swimmable for a fraction of weeks out of the year. More realistically, everything outside the main trail/HOL and VC could get fenced off (which has also been brought up). Some things don't need to be super accessible. More recent - from 2018 - https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/homeowners-trying-to-limit-parking-on-their-street-near-hill-of-life/1294762305/

  6. Perhaps a good ploy would be to put this idea into the heads of the Scottish Woods and Lost Creek residents. They have the motivation, and perhaps the pull and resources, to make it happen.

  7. I already have a Trek Carbon Y1 frame and fork for that purpose! And, I actually built it up as such and rode it a couple times to R&I and BCGB rides!

  9. Helmets have been required for a while now. Not sure when exactly late 90's early 00's IDK. I remember a few deaths in the tour and maybe other classics that made everyone rethink the rules.

  10. No rain for the past 24 hours and sunny today. Should be G2G, especially on the lines with wood jumps.

  11. Had limited time to check trails due to work but... 1/4 Notch - g2g Double Down - g2g Picnic - g2g but wet low spots remain. Surface moisture remains but no rutting and very minimal dirt pickup on tires. Overall trails are not primo but getting there. This afternoon will be a better time to ride compared to this morning for sure. Peddlers likely needs more time this morning to dry based on the condition Picnic was in. If you head out and hit trails I didn’t list let us know how they’re looking!

  12. Loved the article. Paul is an awesome guy who rides with absolute steez. Super humble but kicks total ass. He also happens to run the friendliest bike shop in Texas. I’m a proud owner of the LGT Dragon shirt. It’s fun and IMO a great way to promote the trail. Hope all of y’all get to experience the unique experience of the Dragon. Perhaps a bit of an acquired taste, but WOW! Always feels like a badass old Tejas backcountry mission. It is an amazing (but grueling) experience that is special in a way all its own. Happy trails, and watch out for snakes!

  17. Pretty much this^ I got called out back in the day for taking an "illegal line" up a waterfall in my 4x4. I was a total noob to the area and the local stewards were reasonable and just said "hey look, we've had problems with people taking that line and the erosion it causes so please don't do it". When i apologized and told them i was a dumbass from texas they laughed and were totally cool to deal with from then on. I ended up joining their public land group and started maintaining segments of our local trails, a first in my life. For me, humility was everything. With these days of social media where people seem to pretend to be their avatar, special feelings get hurt easily so I guess we have to be less NYC and more Spock in our approach.

  18. More of us should understand this concept. Of course it doesn't always help, but if there are more of us than them it makes things possible. Also, I believe, the more press and discussion about trails, the more they are a "real" thing. Real things are easier to protect than hearsay and mystical concepts. But it is a trade off for sure.
