  1. Ha! This is a great idea for a thread. My 16yr old son is an absolute natural on the bike but just doesn’t love it. I remember several times at Walnut as a 7 year old I wouldn’t be able to finish saying, “maybe you shouldn’t....oooook” and he’s already down it. I just ordered and received for my 12y.o. daughter a decent Raleigh 27.5” bike off bikesdirect. I did my normal ride the other day and then rode an additional 20mi with her hike n bike, peddlers, picnic, picnic x and she just sat in and didn’t complain or anything. I kept looking back and checking on her, but there she was, just keeping up. About mile 15 she was commenting how it didn’t feel like we had been riding for 1.5hr or so, and I responded that riding bikes is something she needs to do then when it doesn’t feel like work. Love teaching her shifting, obstacles, etc plus just all the wildlife we see. My son will ride if forced but he’s a pure tennis head.

  2. Really like this from fellow Austinite, lifetime Longhorn, and former NFL member E. Acho. Plus, he uses analogy from biking we can all relate to!

  3. This one is from the MTB community, not as well put together as Acho's but some valid points: https://www.vitalmtb.com/forums/The-Hub,2/Eliot-Jackson-Santa-Cruz-Bikes-and-racism-in-our-community,10912

  4. $56 and have it tomorrow. Anyone doing their own wrenching really ought to have a decent one for the low torque range. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0849LNJ36/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_9hq2EbA62R3H5

  6. I can't imagine 9 kids. One boy is enough to wear us out at times. I have always been into biking, so would have been disappointed if my kid didn't show interest. It was a surprise hearing from coming across so many parents that said their kid never wanted to bike until later in life. Glad I didn't waste money on the first bike I bought. Turned out the first balance bike I picked up (just after he was born) had a higher stand-over height than a Strider, so we borrowed a pink Strider from a friend as my son's first bike. He was obsessed with it before he could walk, and is now on his 4th bike. He is putting to use the old XTR v-brakes I had been hanging onto from my past, and so much fun to go on rides with. 20200415_170837.mp4

  7. I know that we as parents can get proud of what our kids accomplish. After all, its pretty cool to see them take some "firsts" in the bike world or accomplish stuff that's new or cool to them (and us). There have been a few times were I sorta wanted to post up these things from my kids, but I just couldn't figure out a format that didn't seem....well...braggadocios. But after having a few off-topic discussions over in the PIF thread, I realized that others may be feeling the same way as me. Combine that with the fact I love to see other kids doing cool stuff and I decided to start this thread. Feel free to post up some cool $hit your kid has done. I'd love to check it out! To pick up where the comments in the PIF thread left off... I'll go first... Right on! Here is a photo of my youngest son Levi on the day he learned to ride his bike. He was 2 yrs and 11.5 mos old. He was my most advanced rider out of all 3 of my boys and my goal was to have him pedaling on his own before he was 3 yrs old. archaeology professor salary

  8. Takes me back to a pub that I used to frequent in Woking, England. Right next to the train station so it was always the first stop after getting off the train.

  9. I don't want to weigh in on my stances right here, but please, be kind, y'all. this year has been absolute shit. we're digging up all the worst aspects of our society at the same time. we need to deal with it. but be kind. families torn apart because some are racists and won't deal with that and others are trying to deal with it for them. it's shredding my heart right now.

  10. On Tuesday I did the Drama Drop on Snail for the first time....on accident. I hadn't ridden Snail in over a month and just forgot which side the ramp was on. Rolled up to it slowly, but not slow enough to stop. Realized the ramp was on the left as I started going over the edge. Somehow i just rolled down and stayed rubber side down. On the bright side, I'm not as scared of the drop as I used to be!

  12. I'm not sure I've ever used a torque wrench when tightening cranks. I've just gone with "tight as hell". I have the Park deflection torque wrenches and the big one only goes up to 70nm. Maybe newer cranksets are more finicky about torque... I'm typically more concerned with over-torque-ing things with very low specs. Somebody else can chime in, but I feel like 54nm is probably pretty close to as tight as you can get it.

  13. We were right, Living Strong burns you out. Team Live Medium forever!!!! And yes I beat Lance in men's open at Juan Pelota. It's in the results! (not really tho, he hauled ass but bailed due to knee injurt or something. I'll take it! Ha)

  14. Ahem, Chardog and Myself. I call that area 7 mile hill. (distance from Bolm trailhead) Made lines on Google Earth, then Char helped me bring ARR clout to the COA parks and meetings. I was the project champion but red tape took the wind out of my sails. The proposal was rebranded from 7 mile hill to Skyline Trails. Char's idea. Anyways first we were told it's a go, since greenbelt land needs no environmental impact studies, or master plan. Then they decided to designate that hill as parkland instead. Boom Crickets. It was to be the first downhill system in the region, but has very minimal emergency access. I should dig up the google earth files. There were maybe 7 shoots and the paved trail was the climb back up.

  15. I ordered this one just because it was a little better rated, but thanks for the thoughts. https://www.amazon.com/Venzo-Bicycle-Torque-Wrench-Socket/dp/B00811WQT8/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=venzo+bike+wrench&qid=1591288619&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-1

  19. Great thread!! I always felt the same way (bragging) about posting stuff about my awesome kids 🙂 As a father of 7 girls, (and a couple boys) I have tons of the cutest biking pictures and videos. I'll just put this one up for now... (also - I know she doesn't have a helmet or shoes on for that matter, but this is in the yard and we are pretty strict about that stuff when we go on pavement or trails) 20200529_182613.mp4

  20. My 7 yo started pedaling right at 2. My oldest (12) was pedaling at 4 with a lot of yelling by me. My youngest is 4 and taught herself about 2 weeks ago. I saw a strava post about 3 weeks ago where my friend took his 8 yo daughter on log loops so I took my son to walnut, rode point 6, and he loved it. Since then we have done outer log as well. We have been riding about once a week, though he would like to ride more. With the 7 year on endo video Im pretty much going to have to force him to do it LOL We did suburban ninja this weekend and it was great for mileage. So far it is my favorite trail for the kids and christ church will have really nice features if he gets good enough. I think woom has geared bikes that will fit a 7 YO. I built my sons bike for my oldest on a specialized hotrock base.

  21. Went for an afternoon ride yesterday and my 6yo wanted to join! She did all of Picnic out and back (except the drops). Her bike is great but I can't wait for her to have some gears and rear AND front brakes.
