  1. I never wore a helmet as a kid. So let that be a lesson to all. I should do one of those scared straight programs going from cafeteria to cafeteria haranguing children about the dangers of ending up in financial analytics middle management.

  3. Yup, the lady I quoted upthread isn't wrong! Zipped over to WC even though things looked ominous, because the temps fell a little and there was a (relatively) cool breeze. Started with a half Inner Log, whole Outer Log and a full Inner Log and headed home when it began to thunder. A few drops fell, then eventually enough to get the pavement wet, barely, and that was it. This is consistent weather pattern; it seems our area up here is in a rain shadow of sorts. I've often watched a sure fire line of thunderstorms break apart and leave us dry.

  4. I came in here to say basically the same thing. As someone with a degree and a quasi-career in journalism, this is key to the job. I've had to do this on at least one occasion while writing for a newspaper and it was a tough call. if readers don't trust the journalist or the outlet, then they will not trust that the "unanimous source" is legit. if the journalist has any professional ethics, they will only quote verified sources and protect their identity and then back it up with facts or print a retraction later. journalists have been jailed and killed for not revealing the name of their sources. however, they also have to maintain credibility, or their readers' trust and ability to use unnamed sources will be compromised. there are conspiracy theory outlets that someone maintain credibility in other ways by playing to their readers' ignorance, but they regularly abuse the practice of quoting anonymous sources by citing known liars and making up quotes out of thin air. that's the scary media landscape we live in, where conspiracy theory hucksters are amplified in the public conversation. none of that applies to the Garmin story. I doubt there are a lot of scary secrets behind that.

  5. When a major news outlet like NYT or BBC reports from anonymous sources, you can be pretty confident that they have verified the identity of the source as a knowledgable insider and are reporting facts. It's pretty basic journalistic ethics, and it would sink the reputation of these outlets substantially if they were caught reporting an unreliable or false source. I highly doubt the media is colluding with Garmin's competitors in this case. Most likely, it is a group of verified employees that don't want to lose their jobs. I have no doubt there is corruption in news media, but it usually takes form of selective reporting and exaggeration. Very rarely do overt falsehoods get reported by the major media players.

  6. Okay...question. Are they making the BS fan noises for the athletes? Like, at the stadium over the speakers? For motivation? Or is the noise just on the broadcast for audience comfort? Like for Big Bang Theory fans? Or dummies that like their letterbox movies choped to fit their 16:9 screens? In either case society sucks. Burn it all down.

  10. There was a discussion on Nextdoor about someone at the Veloway getting hurt. The original poster said always wear a helmet and don't use headphones. I chimed in because wearing a helmet is "the only thing I preach about." I rarely post to Nextdoor because it is thick with the crazies. But I was compelled to. After saying it's not if a helmet will save you it's "when." I commented on wearing headphones. It just came to me so I said, "Using headphones that blocks outside noise is just as dangerous as not wearing a helmet. And this danger is not only to you, but to those that crash into you, because you didn't hear their warnings. It's almost the same concept as wearing a mask at the store. Your mask wearing saves other people. So you being able to hear warnings saves not only you, but other people too."

  12. This is one example of about four I've read about in the past few weeks. Let's just hope that while you consider the nuances of English grammar usage/application, and AustinBike reminisces of what data quantity makes a trend... You'd both be wise enough to keep your bikes safe from marauding thieves.

  13. I watched the dubbed version on Netflix, but I'm going to rewatch all three season with the original audio. Edit: I can select it on Netflix.

  14. I'll have to check that out. This is not the reading thread, but you might be interested in the book I just finished reading. Sarah Vowell's "Lafayette in the Somewhat United States". She digs into some really interesting tidbits that I never learned in the so many years of school that hammered the same tired stuff over and over. Sam Adams and Paul Revere are two names that come up.

  15. Spent much of the day Sunday watching Sons of Liberty, which was apparently released back in 2015. It was quite riveting and really made me think about how so many different twists and turns could have resulted in a completely different outcome for America. Definitely have a much greater appreciation for the role Sam Adams played. Might have to pick up a sixer of Boston Lager in his honor. https://www.starz.com/us/en/series/31177/episodes?season=1

  17. I was watching a baseball game and it sounded like there is a way to call in and actually cheer for your team. Like they pump the actual audio from the call-in fans over the rest of the fake crowd noise.

  19. Maybe if all the other companies would wear a mask and turn off their headphones, the infection rate would go down.

  20. I'm an IT Director for a Berkshire Hathaway company, I live in this world daily. According to my sources, it's more like >40%, not 90%. Also, that number reflects companies that are infected. Infection means that they either didn't protect themselves, or did a really shitty job of it. There are no excuses for letting it happen with all of the amazing tools available. There are many layers of protection that should be in place. Anti-virus/malware for workstations, servers, and cloud providers. This includes Edge protection for web traffic and email. In addition DNS services that can prevent exposure. DLP (Data Loss Prevention) solutions that protect data at rest, and in motion. Blocking access to external file sharing, and even USB drives. Data written to USB drives from domain member/Intune (Endpoint Protection) managed devices is encrypted to prevent access by non-authorized users. Protecting backups, and ensuring that EVERYTHING is not only backed up...it's also tested, and restores are verified. Using encryption (BitLocker, FileVault, etc.) on all laptops, desktops, and phones/tablets, etc. Requiring VPN for all internal network access for internet based devices. Requiring MFA (Multi Factor Auth) for all services, even web mail access. We don't even allow email forwarding rules on mailboxes. Any companies we do business with have to submit a security audit, and be verified prior to us allowing connections to their resources. We use a company that sends test emails to our users, looking for people that do click on those bad links. All email from outside of the company has a large banner stating that across the top. Anyone that fails one of these tests has their emails reformatted to remove live links for one year. Anyone that fails three times is history. Our email clients have buttons at the top for reporting suspected phishing. It quarantines the email, and alerts our security people. With a couple clicks, the emails is removed from all users mailboxes. Any company that is a ransomeware victim is at fault. They didn't do their part properly. If a workstation gets infected, we have Cisco ISE, and SourceFire inline (along with DLP) to watch, and block any activity that would allow the infection to spread. We use ISE (Identity Services Engine) to manage/monitor/protect every single switch port. If your device doesn't have the proper certificate, that post is shutdown. Wireless is even more strict. A company like Garmin has NO excuse for falling victim to this.

  22. They look like their CGI fans. I was also wondering if you have them cheer for the home team or if you have to make it neutral. Too much time on my hands I suppose. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  23. Been watching a lot of baseball. I don't like the cardboard fans. The noise doesn't bother me much. I can't help but wonder who has the job of controlling the fan noise. And how do you get that job. Is it the organist? The TV production staff? I would think it's from the stadium staff for the home team. I have so many questions. Cant find the article now but somebody bought like a whole section of those virtual fan cardboard cutout things. You could have some fun with that.

  25. Oh I heard the sirens from my house getting ready for my ride. When I rode past the veloway entrance there were 2 fire trucks and another truck & trailer for the rescue ATV. No idea what happened but it must have been serious. On the veloway everyone should be going the same direction ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ You know just after that I got stuck behind someone going down terminus with headphones and one of those roadie helmet mounted rear view mirrors. He never saw me and didn't hear me and was going annoyingly slow so I bailed out on the sneaky shortcut halfway down. Headphone users are the worst.

  26. I have given up on trying to convince texans to do things for the good of society or to help others. Everything needs to be expressed specifically to appeal to them and only them or they immediately push back.

  28. This thread made me look up a video my buddy made of a bikepacking trip we did in Big Bend Ranch State Park back in 2010. From talking to and trying to get info from the rangers and Mike Long at Desert Sports, I think we were among the first to do a big multi day ride out there. We had to make our own gps route from the topos. That was a total blast.

  30. I've been watching the series America: Our Defining Hours on the History Channel. It's probably the best depiction of American History I've seen, combining re-enactments, real photos and footage, and statements from well versed guest lecturers on defining people and moments in our history. Funny how much I hated history in school but can't get enough of it as an elder. https://www.history.com/shows/america-our-defining-hours

  31. I hate Top Chef reality type shows, but I love the traveling Chef shows. On Netflix: The Chef Show (Jon Favreau and Roy Choi); Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat (Samin Nosrat); Ugly Delicious (David Chang). My wife is the one that got started with all of them. The problem with all of them is they make me want to eat everything they show.
