  2. when I was fighting with the city to keep cat open they admitted that natural erosion was much larger than anything people would do. Erosion is a big deal when you are building a subdivision and all that dirt clogs up a waterway. But erosion doesnt always matter. In santa barbara, erosion is eating cliffs and threatens to destroy homes. In most of our area erosion is a complete non issue. The city also said that trails create impervious cover..

  4. I have 2 drop bar bikes with a drop posts. My fat bike (FattyFattyDropDrop) has a drop bar with with a PNW lever inside the left drop. You can put on the bar as well, but I never ride technical terrain on the hood--only in the drops. So it's where I need it. But my Chamois Hagar has the best solution. It has a GRX 1x drivetrain and the 160mm BikeYoke post is actuated by the front/left "shift" lever. It's glorious!

  5. Well, that is an interesting question. Are we OK with this: In the world of COVID all bets are off. That chart is just Texas and as we continue to toss another 6-8,000 Texans per day onto the fire, it's pretty clear that we don't have a good plan and some steps need to be taken. What we don't know is: 1. If you aren't starting from one of those primary 5-6 starting places, does it matter? 2. If you are starting before 10:30 does it matter? 3. Are they patrolling the trails and stopping people randomly to check for reservations? Clearly I would rather have none of this, but because I don't park at those trailheads and I start before 10:30 this may be a total non-issue. If it helps limit the number of idiots that are out there on the main trail that may not be a bad thing. If I ride the GB it will be with a bandana because I know the types of people who frequent it on the weekends (as evidenced by the empty beer cans and trash) and I just don't trust them. We live in weird times and to some degree we need to stop asking are we ok with this because the last time we argued "are we OK with this" was back in May when we were shut down. People argued that the shutdown was unnecessary and that we could all be adults and really be responsible for ourselves. Just look up at that chart again and look at May vs. July to see how well we did. With school starts all in a state of flux and the impact that will bring to both families and the economy, is having this restriction so onerous?

  6. In that situation you would still just call the police and they would respond pretty much like they would now. But if the systems where in place your partner may have gotten the help to deal with things before they got out of hand, or would be able to receive that help now rather then simply being locked up (or killed for being upset). I also have family in LE and as a BMX rider have A LOT of experience with others while on the job and I can say definitely, echoing other comments from this thread, that they are just people. Some good some bad. I will also repeat, no reasonable person wants to completely get rid of the cops. But I think everyone can agree that there is probably a better system then we have now.

  7. Change is painful. The pandemic shined a light on the reality that we as country (and species) have been doing it wrong for decades. Covid is just a shot across the bow for what is coming down the pike as we continue to shit where we eat. Learn to swim.

  9. Im currently watching excavators strip all the trees and grass from the hillside across from me. The COA, in their greed fueled wisdom are allowing developers to destroy some of the last of the remaining land with any elevation in south austin. The COA is also allowing the developers to build without retention ponds and instead install a 9ft drainage pipe to channel all the water from these developments right into onion creek. That will without a doubt will erode houses from their slabs during the next big flood. Hypocrites. rant/off

  12. I posted some comments a page or so back about the CH fork. I was concerned that my puny wrists would hurt if I rode a lot of trail with their stock carbon fork. But according to EVIL, there is no fork on the market which matches closely enough the CH's offset and A to C. What I didn't realize at the time is that the ENVE bar is super compliant, and I suppose that's why I haven't had any issues with wrist pain.

  13. looks good. I was thinking about the TRP Slate brakes, about $120 a set. I keep finding retailers that don't have them in stock though. all this drama makes me want to go back to mechanicals. BB7s needed to be fiddled with sometimes, but at least it was not so messy!

  16. We lost Forest Ridge to birds We lost s****y to developers City park is perpetually in danger We've lost plenty of trails. I look at it this way: doing small simple things to help preserve what we love is a small price to pay. What if this is a trailhead issue only? There is no indication that people will be patrolling the GB looking for tickets, this seems like a way to modulate access. I'd rather not have it, but if it increases the probability that access is not lost then I am ok with it. Austin is growing and this is no different than the traffic issues we face. I'd rather have the city trying to figure out how to manage it then just say screw it and either wall it off or sell it off to developers.

  18. OK, I just went in and created a reservation for next week. Here's the lowdown: 1. There appears to be the following entrances: Hill of Life, Gaines creek (Mopac), 360, Zilker, Gus Fruh, Spyglass, and Homedale drive. 2. There is no cost associated. 3. I am guessing that if they are patrolling they *could* ask to see your authorization, but I am unclear if this is only for parking/entrance or for usage. For instance, it is not clear if you start somewhere else or ride to the ride if you need a reservation. 4. Passes are for 10:30-3:00 or 3:00-7 It is unclear if this means no passes before 10:30. With August heat, who is gonna start that late? Overall this is an extra level of pain in the ass but because I just don't generally use those starting points I'm not sure this will be that much of an issue. The passes for the greenbelt *appear* to be for the entrance and not for parking. There were talks about making the HOL entrance paid street parking. If I go next week I'll report back.

  21. I’ve got a problem with you throwing all cops into the corrupt agency pool. How many LE people do you know? How many stories have you heard first hand about the way the public abuses them? What have your experiences been with LE? How do you feel when people put all mountain bikers in the dope smoking, reckless riding, rude category? I’m married to someone in LE. Another recently lived with us. Needless to say, we have many friends in LE and I’m gonna tell you that these are good people that went into law enforcement for ALL THE RIGHT REASONS. We’re fucked without law enforcement. Prove me wrong.

  22. I appreciated that rant, I could identify a good bit with it. But this right here is the true nugget in your comment. All of the politicians suck. But now that we've all been successfully divided into tribalism with Red on one side and Blue on the other.....then its always 'the other guys [team] fault". -CJB

  23. ill add my crap 2c I have friends who are cops, from patrolmen to detectives. I also have friends that are protesters. There's definitely a disconnect in humanity between the two and it sucks. Modern day police are stretched further in their job description than ever, for more hours and shittier pay and benefits. A lot of small town/suburban cops have side jobs. I know one that mows lawns to supplement income. Most are far from getting piles of cash. I also know a few sheriffs dept swat guys that love nothing more than slamming redbulls and kicking down doors. Some cops are also sociopaths (takes one to catch one right?). I know some that are lazy good for nothings that get "promoted" to SROs and basically do nothing all day long. I also know some that are just good people trying to earn a living. Point is, they are just like us and a reflection of our society. Problem is, the cops have a monopoly on violence, and they are the stick the state uses to beat us with. In the end, it's the lawmakers who are truly fucking us and should be receiving the public's ire. They are shorting cops, schools, fire depts anything that serves the public is getting cut. Now the bloated police budgets need to be dealt with just like the military budgets. Just because we spend "X" dollars on a department doesn't mean the people on the ground see much or any improvement in their lives. Military is full of poor motherfuckers, yet 60c of every tax dollar collected goes to our mercenary military. Same with the police. The fact that it has become so militarized is the main issue for me. Storm troopers dressed in all black with armor doing driveby policework. 1033 was a total recipe for disaster that shifted the arms race internally when the USSR collapsed, and needs to end. People are angry, scared and really desperate right now. Understandably so. Their leaders have failed them by refusing to stand for anything leaving them no alternative other than to march. They are also flawed, just like the cops. My biggest concern is the lack of central leadership from both sides coming to the table and having real open discussion on how we got where we are, and what we're going to do moving forward. This leaves a vacuum for people who want to stir things up and go buck wild until the state drops the fist on all of us. Those guys snatching people and throwing them into enterprise rental caravans are downright scary. Yet, the mayors and governors are not activating the state police to stop them because the cops are pissed at the protesters as well. It's a big fucking mess, just like everything else we are doing right now. How anyone knowing what lance has done in his past, will now draw a hard line on this, is beyond me. Outraged snowflakes for the sake of being outraged.

  25. Earbuds aren't the problem. it's volume. I've used earbuds for several 10hr NUE races and Enchilida Buffets maybe even a TMBRA or two. At low volume you can still hear everything, even riders calling to pass or getting on your wheels. Road training rides too. Never had a problem. Not saying all others have a brain or care tho.

  28. Businesses should be able to reserve the right to refuse service for whatever reason they see fit. It's their business. If they don't want to sell bikes to APD, they shouldn't. Just like if someone didn't wanna bake a cake for someone, they shouldn't. If profit drops off, they'll have to live with it. If I get refused service somewhere, I'll gladly take my money elsewhere. Just my 2 cents.
