  2. Was looking at getting a Chamois Hagar to upgrade my gravel bike but then a little bird had asked me about considering upgrading my aging FS bike. With some advice and research that is the way I've decided to go. Just put a deposit on a Revel Rascal. Got an email that the frame will ship late October early November. Get ready for rain 🤷‍♂️ sorry. This be the one. Looking forward to experiencing CBF.

  4. Just. Get. Out. There. And. Ride. Do it solo to get yourself comfortable. Walk the features that you are unsure of. Session things. Take your time. Remember you are not on the couch, you are outside. And there is beer at the end. I have been off the mountain bike since February. I should be back on trails some time in early October but I will not ride with anyone until I have had several rounds on my own to get back into the groove. That includes walking things that I used to bomb down and maybe even crashing once or twice. Oh, and did I mention there was beer at the end? There is always beer at the end.

  5. Few things: Is this MrTheCatLady? I've got to give some props for hitting that on a rigid bike. Seriously, that's not a normal use for that kind of feature (which means that you need legit skilz to pull it off successfully). Next, I've always wanted to see that video in full speed. The slow-mo changes the flow of what happens and accentuates all the subtle nuances (sometimes in misleading ways) Lastly, initially the take off and landing look OK. Its a few moments later on the lower stuff where he gets out of wack and looses the front end. (Loss of focus?...shock that he pulled off the upper and now has his hands full with the lower stuff?) HOWEVER, I suspect that even though the launch looks pretty good, you CAN see that he's off ever so slightly from the centerline of his mass, thus causing his bike to gently over-correct in the air, which may ultimately have set him up for loosing the front end later on (as his mass moves left and right). Its almost like a mini tank-slapper. But as I said above, I think seeing the video in real time would answer a bit more. Still it wasn't a bad effort IMHO. But with that kind of tool doing that kind of job, there is very little margin for subtle errors. (this is coming from someone who's pretty much been a life-long hardtail rider) Cheers, CJB

  6. Erik Eokerholm(?) He ended up being a customer at the HH shop early on. We had him a custom built Ventana 29er (for a 6' 6" tall dude) and it completely changed his riding life! The big 29er wheels suited his size so much better and Ventana was able to make one to truly fit him. We custom spec'd a few tubes for strength and rigidity while running quad bearings everywhere. It actually ended up being a nice success story. Later, CJB

  7. That poor dude took a shit load of online ribbing for that one, I remember him eventually getting totally pissed. Someone even had a still of him going over as their avatar. 😂

  8. THUMPER! MOS DEF Went for a lap Sunday morning and stubbed both big toes and fell over into a tree hitting my helmet on that first loop off to the left. So yeah I got slapped within the first 5 min pretty good. Then got ass kicked by the first creek crossing and had to take the slog of shame in knee deep water. Craig kept going on the other side but said there were too many trees down to have any fun. Crazy I can slay Georgetown but got KOed on bitty lil Thump. I will try to get in better shape and go back but not until the heat dies down. It could use a few trail days and maybe reevaluate the signage. Also I had a high blood pressure incident less than a month ago and now need to be mindful of chest pains, which is partly why I bailed. 😞

  9. I also think Thumper, there is a 'warm up loop', but it is harder than the main trail. I have a scar on my elbow to prove it. Up top above the tower, it really isn't very well suited for bikes.

  10. Changed my MTB life. Still clipless on the gavel bike. I know, I know...Some people are amazing with clipless on the trails, and that's awesome. *For me* it's flats and my five tens.

  13. Big fan of salsa here (3 of their bikes currently in the garage), but I really struggle with their prices for the spec in their mtb range. 6k for a GX Eagle build Blackthorn?? Jesus tap dancing christ. On the complete opposite side of the spectrum, in their adventure/gravel bike range I think they offer some of the best bang for the buck bikes in the entire industry. Just my $0.02

  14. Figured I'd close the loop on this thread. Ended up putting a deposit down on a Ripmo with Velorangutan. I went with the XT build, Factory 36, Factory X2 and the standard aluminum wheelset. I'm slightly second guessing my choice of wheels but didn't feel great about forking over an additional $700 for the Ibis carbon rims with the i9 hydra hubs. I was given a delivery estimate of the first or second week in September...which has now passed. No frustration towards the guys over at Velorangutan as they don't have any control over Ibis sending them the bike, but the anticipation is certainly killing me! Hoping the bike gets here soon as we are slowly approaching some great riding weather. Would also like to get seat time on the new bike before October's EB: Pandemic edition. Anyways, fingers crossed.

  15. I thought Thumper but there is no warm-up loop. You're just tossed into the belly of the beast once you pass the transmission tower.

  16. stop being such a snowflake. I called that "sad" because I know you can do better and you'll have more fun not tiptoeing around little curbs on your bike. I have faith in you! stop being a wussypants with curbs and mostertruck that shit!

  17. @ MrthecatLady If I recall sometime back there was the video of you just getting worked on SpongeBob and it was determined that it was more of a technique related issue when you rolled it and got tore up. There is always gonna be something looking to throw me down but if my technique and or riding style in that particular moment is correct than my odds of getting wrecked are minimized. Also as noted above I have to listen to my body\mind and keep the ego in check. When I am tired or distracted or just out of it , I bail. I dont care anymore. Every time (almost) I've gotten hurt was because I tried to push through to accomplish something. My body tells me when to stop if I listen.

  18. I started mtb on flat BMX pedals and Etnies, spent some years riding mtb in SPD pedals, then went back to platforms with good mtb sneakers. there are occasions when my foot comes off the flat pedal and I realize that a mishap would have been avoided if I was clipped in, but it is FAR more common that I can put a foot down to keep from crashing and realize that I would have been on the ground if I had been clipped in. so far, I see zero difference in how capable I am on the bike with flats but my confidence has gone way up. I am not racing anyone or chasing KOMs, so i don't care if I was 10% faster clipped in. a lot of people like their clipped in pedals and that's fine. for me, I was riding SPD because that's what "real serious mountain bikers do" and I ended up enjoying the alternative quite a bit more. if you're crashing a lot and clipped in, i suggest trying flats.

  19. 'The Hazy IPA' - 6.5% - very clean finish, not very fruity. Not sure if this can be found back in the ATX, but I'd hit it again.

  20. 100% - With EJ at $20 for 4 16-ozers vs $10 for 6-12 ozers, Fresh Kicks has it's place. Here is one in it's natural habitat yesterday. Hazy IPA for a hazy hike at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

  21. After my blind taste test I concur 100% with your take @GFisher. I picked out the EJ right away but was also really impressed with Fresh Kicks. Though they are both hazy IPAs they are very different. The FK has a drier finish. Both very tropical but the EJ's finish is what sets it apart.

  22. Staying on the oktoberfest kick as long as the supply lasts. The Austin beerworks montecore is definitely my new favorite.
