  1. If you have T8 lamps you can buy a plug and play Led that works with ballast.. if they are the older T12 style you would have to bypass ballast, the end will be stamped with part number info denoting if t8 or t12. T stands for the shape, tubular, and the number denotes size in diameter measured in 1/8's of an inch so t8 is a tube 1" diameter. There are some Led tubes that will work with or without ballast but sometimes buying a new led fixture is worth dealing with retrofitting old T12 fixtures...ive seen old sockets burn up when wired direct. The downfall of most new LED fixtures is normally there is no replacement lamp, everything is integrated, so if it goes out you have to buy a whole new fixture I would suggest a 4000k color...colors of lights are measured in Kelvin with the lower numbers being more yelllow...ie 2700k mimics traditional incandescent yellow and as you go higher in Kelvin the more white and blue you get...they say 65k is "daylight" but I find it offensive. One misconception is color temperature, kelvin, is synonymous with brightness but it's not..if you want brighter look at lumens and CRI..lumens is actual light output and cri is color rendering index on a scale to 100...anything over 85 is good 90 or more is excellent....i think cri is more important than lumens in most cases So in short...If you have t8 lamps just look for a "plug and play" option for an easy relamp...assuming your ballast are good. 2. Continuing on the brake repair theme. A buddy of mine gave me some M9000 XTR brakes with carbon levers. Cool right? There's a catch. He's the Seth Buckgnar of Utah and generally breaks everything he touches. These were no exception. The carbon levers had been broken and replaced on numerous occasions and in the process, the 2mm hex on the lever reach adjustment/master cylinder pushrod had stripped. Ended up pulling them apart only to find shimano doesn't offer any parts for these and my only option was to buy a new lever/master assembly or repair it. Since i'm stubborn AF, I bought a replacement lever and shit rigged it by hammering a T10 torx into the 2mm hex receiver. That stupidity distorted the threads to where the lever wouldn't thread back on. Had to die the threads and ever so carefully put it all back together. I can say without hesitation, putting that snap ring back in was one of the most infuriating things ive ever done on bike repair. All back together and ready to upgrade the old XT 785s on the wife's bike.

  3. Good for you for doing it multiple times. I did it the one time and that, so far, has been enough for me.

  4. Yeah that's how I know I've turned into my dad: half my job is turning off lights around the house. I put a sensor light in the pantry (important with two teenage boys one is also 16) and it's awesome.

  7. I had asked a few weeks ago about the appropriate speed for hitting the big drop on Snail. After running out of excuses, I finally conducted my own trial and error exercise. Seems obvious in hindsight, but it turns out you CAN go too slow on that drop. Like everybody else, I hit it too fast the first time. The second time, I slowed down way too much in an effort to find the "right" speed,. As I started dropping, I remember thinking I may not clear the gap. Luckily, I did clear it, but ended up with a super, super scary nose heavy landing. Third time, I went back to not worrying about going too fast, and it was just fine. I guess the lesson for me was, as always, don't overthinking it and just go. For me, the landing doesn't seem that much harsher than the bigger drops on picnic.

  10. I was going to go the Amazon route for led fixtures. But one of the reviews pointed out that many are not UL listed which can be a big red flag if theres ever a home insurance claim for fire. I got 6 of the Costco ones when they were on sale and now I can let the kids ride at night in the driveway/sidewalk if I roll up the garage doors.

  11. The build was a trailcraft maxwell 24. I migrated all the parts over but the spindle threads for the non driveside crank were stripped (hotrock had a 68mm shell and the trailcraft has a 73mm so the original bolt was long enough to hit threads on the hotrock). I used the helicoil to repair the threads which worked great. I wanted to get the lug nut bolt so at least he could ride the bike on his birthday. I got two versions of drain plugs from amazon (couldnt find the lengths) but shipping was a week out. It turns out both worked. It is one of the few times when every option and backup option worked, which was nice for a change.

  14. I started adding light sensors, one in the garage, one in the bike workshop area, one in the laundry room and one in the master closet. All of them have motion sensors and automatically turn off if there is no motion for 5 minutes. I am so used to them that when I have to turn off a light I get angry. I'd love one in the master bathroom but you don't want to be blasted by lights at 2am when you are trying to take a leak.

  19. There used to be a post on Craigslist from a guy asking for old tubes. I think he said he recycled them or something... I can't find it right now. Probably expired. Sorry, I just realized my post offers nothing. But I've already gone this far so I might as well click submit.
