  3. I was chatting about this with a buddy recently who new a guy that got his SC Bronson stolen out of the back of his truck at Querro's lot several months ago. They cut the lock but he had a tag somewhere on his bike and he ended up tracking it to SE Austin. He rolled up and spotted a punk riding it in a apartment complex lot. Long story short the thief gotta broken nose and he got his bike back.

  4. My brother found the picture from my first day mountain biking. City Park 1992. My brother, James, is on the left, and Chris Thomas is next to him. He used to be an assistant manage at BSS on Toomey Road back then, so if you saw a tall skinny guy that looked like him, it was. I'm on the far right. Edit: You can see me wearing that Middlebury jersey Chris is wearing in this picture in the first picture I posted to start this thread. Chris gave that to me at some point, and I still wear it.

  5. City Park was my first trail, too! I was about a year out of the military (1992), playing soccer, and in great shape when I came home to visit my family. My brother was going mountain biking with friends, and I said that it sounded like fun. They scrounged up an old Mongoose Iboc for me, and I put on a pair of sweats and some sneakers for my first mountain bike ride. City Park was running clockwise then, and they took off down the first three ledges. I followed them like I knew what I was doing, came into the right hand turn at the bottom of the last ledge, and failed to make the turn, grabbing fistfuls of brakes, going over the bars helmetless, and landing on a poor juniper sapling that broke my fall. From those first 20 seconds, I was in love with the sport!

  6. I wouldn't say even that I was a mountain biker at the time, but here is me with my first mountain bike, which I purchased online for $499 in 2008 I think. Had rode a mountain bike once before in upstate NY, and after moving to Austin decided that I wanted to take up the sport. Once I had the bike I checked out ARR's website and decided I should head right over to City Park. Nearly killed myself that day and then decided Walnut Creek was a better place for me to get started.

  8. What a good idea!!!! Thanks, when my bone conducting headphones are OOC, I usually just listen to my phone speaker. I could use our garage bluetooth! Awesome, thanks!!!!

  9. You want it not fully shielded by conductive materials--which may include carbon fiber. So inside a cloth seat bag, taped under the seat, etc. I have a bluetooth module for my Di2 that I put inside the handlebar (close to the plastic bar end) since that was a place that some people have used successfully to hide it...but it did not work for me.

  10. seems like there's a parallel phenomenon in every hobby: https://tpwd.texas.gov/newsmedia/releases/?req=20220110a Texas Game Warden’s Investigation Results in Organized Crime Ring Bust and Multiple Arrests Jan. 10, 2022 The two year, multi-agency effort led to high praise, award nominations and safer coastal communities GALVESTON – What started off as a run-of-the-mill investigation into a series of boat title discrepancies, concluded this past summer with multiple felony charges against three individuals suspected of running an interstate theft ring and the recovery of over $275,000 worth of stolen watercraft and other vehicles. Sergeant Game Warden Jonathan Griffin of the Marine Theft Investigation Unit facilitated an impressive two-year investigation into the organized crime ring leading to a nomination for Investigator of the Year Award by the International Association of Marine Investigators. “Considering that this is an international award I am really humbled to have been nominated,” said Sergeant Griffin. “I am very grateful to the Galveston County Auto Crimes Task Force and the other agencies across Texas, Alabama, and Florida who assisted with the resources necessary to build a strong case to hand over to the district attorney’s office for prosecution.” Sergeant Griffin further explained that the case began with a tip from the La Marque Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Law Enforcement Office regarding an individual titling numerous jet skis in their name at very low purchase prices. Eventually, a Florida county tax office notified the Sergeant that the suspect and a second individual were also titling a number of jet skis in Florida in the same manner. Over the following months, the Marine Theft Investigation Unit worked to trace the jet skis that were bought and sold by the suspects. The investigators uncovered that the jet skis being titled were actually stolen throughout Texas and then sold across multiple gulf states with false titles and identification numbers. Their work then identified a third suspect who had participated in the activity. “After recovering 27 stolen vessels and trailers, we filed charges and arrested the three suspects for theft and engaging in organized crime,” said Griffin. “While the charges are pending, we are working to locate and recover more stolen jet skis and boats that may have been sold using the same scheme. It has been satisfying to be able to help get this property back to the rightful owners.” The case is currently being handled by the Galveston County District Attorney’s office.

  11. The options for attaching one are really pretty limited, unfortunately. Interestingly, an Airtag is almost the exact size of a headset cap -- now if Apple would only produce one in matt black with a bolt hole thru the center, THAT would be a game changer!

  12. I think there's a disconnect in the conversation. I think of these tags as something I'd used in the immediate (minutes to a few hours) time after it got stolen. I think a lot of you are thinking about this way farther down the line. There's more value for one than the other.

  13. I’m new to the video game, this one’s rough, the plan is to improve. Critiques welcome. My thoughts now after this one, little too long, some clips too short, needs another off bike camera angle and maybe a full face helmet with chin mount angle would be better instead of top of helmet.

  18. This one is embarrassing. That's me in the middle sporting an extra chin and posing with my first "mountain bike", a Specy Hardrock. Taken somewhere around 2006 in Lubbock after riding trails that in hindsight were definitely too muddy and thinking how cool our bikes looked caked in mud.

  20. Cool thread... Here are my easy to reach photos. I know I can get a little earlier with the MTB and much earlier back to my 11 yr old BMX days. This is my very first MTB race while at TX Tech in Fall of 94', I ended up winning the 3 race series and I still have the 'chainring trophy' on my bookshelf. I made a few friends at that race that I still ride with to this day. 2nd time to Lajitas (Desert Classic 1995). This was my 2nd race ever and believe it was at Flat Creek Ranch 1995. This was back when XC rode very technical stuff on skinny @ss 26er tires, 63mm travel Mag21's were "long travel", and the Expert Class (Cat 1) raced a mind-blowing 3 laps for about 20 miles(!!!) LOL

  21. I am sure there are earlier flatland photos, but here's me being a dirtbag bmx street rat grinding a heavily waxed ledge in downtown Indianapolis. baggy jeans, oversized t-shirt, no helmet. I probably have bulky knee pads under those jeans. late '90s.
