  1. 2 laps this year.  I'm finally embracing this route in 2023.  Starting\ending at Russel breaks up the difficult parts nicely and allows you to hammer all out for the last 8 miles that is mostly double track.  I've done a 2 single lappers in previous DS years and did a 3 lapper the day after the DS in 2021.

Lap 1 took me 4 hours and it was fastest\easiest 30 mile version I've done.  Was charging downhill after leaving Jim Hogg on lap 2 and wiped out pretty good.  Was so tired at that point I just laid sprawled out along the trail to rest for a few minutes.  Laying on the rocks seemed more comfortable than getting back on the bike..  I took it slower for the remainder of the loop which caused my 2nd lap to be about 4:45.  An overall 9 hour time for 2 laps which included about 15 min restocking between laps.

I intentionally started late so I would not be tempted to try 3 laps.   I could have started lap 3 at 5:45pm, but it would have taken me at least 5 hours to finish.   I'm totally happy with 2 laps this year and have a healthy motivation to shoot for 3 laps next year.

We will contact the rangers and see if we can get a work day in.  I believe bow hunting is currently active on the south side of the trail around Cedar Breaks.  They had the park closed and everyone was hiking at Hogg. I talked to the gate attendant when I was clearing a tree at Hogg and he informed me they had hunting on the south side open.

Are most of the tress located before or after the 5mi marker, the 5 mile marker is after Cedar Hollow???

I want to say most trees would be between mile markers 3-5.  It would require a chainsaw to cut these which is why I'm asking here.

  3. Last year's event was a lot of fun and was talking to Carl about dates for next year.  I'll probably reserve a spot in the next few days.

Feel free to join or pass along.

    Basic Agenda for most folks

    Morning  ride 2-3 hours

    Swimming pool in the afternoon

Bbq and drink in the evenings

  4. my drop bar bikes climb much better than my mountain bikes even though the mtbs have lower gearing.  I suspect its mostly because of the rigid fork and less tire volume which results in less energy loss when pedaling slow and hard.  The skinnier tires also have less friction which would result in slightly less resistance.

I did the chainring massacre a few weeks ago.  was a lot of fun.

Another successful Desert Fest Redux. We had 19-24 riders on each ride. Weather was perfect. Was good to meet JRIDER and his bro. Good times.

Next year's dates Feb 21-25. Make your plans now.

Thanks for organizing the trip.  I'm definitely planning to go again.  I'll bring some proper grilling equipment next time.

  6. Congrats on the new rv!!   Some of us are heading to Lajitas this Feb....

Perdenales state park has plenty of trails in the park and nearby.  Plus there are a lot of great restaurants in the area.  State parks usually can't fit large rvs but I don't think that's a problem for yours.  And there is no septic hookup so you gotta dump on the way out.

There are a few rv parks in moab.  A local told me that oct is the best time to visit.  I'd like to try that next year.

I'd also like to do a 2 week trip to Colorado this summer and gonna start looking into some rv parks.

  7.

I've got an RV spot reserved for the weekend, but have to travel Sunday afternoon.  Might just show up Saturday morning, ride for a few hours and hang out afterwards for a bit.

@The Tip,  About what time were you planning on riding Saturday morning and for about how long?

  8. Rode a straight line through Suburban Ninja and hit the regional brushy trails yesterday afternoon.   SN was good except for a few damp spots in the shade.  From the regional trails, Deception looked slightly too wet.  I saw a couple coming off of picnic x by the bridge and their tires were tracking mud (not too bad though).

I think the trails will be good this afternoon except for mulligan and maybe peddlers.   I'm planning to ride out there later today.

  9. I miss the Desert Fest and would like to do some group riding out there.   Anyone aware of any groups heading out there in February that wouldn't mind some company?

Would be happy to do 20-30 mile rides and possibly a longer ride with some proper planning.

    Thanks!

  10. The best way the deal with the weight on the helmet is to have a separate mounted battery.  I tried the contained light on the helmet and it felt like someone was smacking me on the head each time I hit a bump.  Not good on a technical trail.  Save the contained lights for the handlebars.
