sigh. I really didn't want to address this but, to protect what little reputation I have, I am compelled to do so.

I am not sure why I am having to endure TAF's unrelenting wrath. It started with his suggestion for a cleanup of a particular spot in the SATN. I didn't immediately jump on it and make it happen. He has been very angry at me since. I'm not sure why he didn't organize this event himnself if it was so important to him.

But I'm amazed that he accuses me of "doing nothing for the community." The irony being that I would be willing to bet that there are less than five people in town that have given as many hours to trail building, maintenance, organizing clean ups, putting on community building events, and participating in other's events too, (ARR etc), as I have. For example, I've used Strava to track my walking miles at trail work for eight years now. I average over a hundred miles a year. That includes just walking to do hours long projects at single spots. It would be fun if Strava tracked all time hours at each activity too.

He wants The SATN Facebook page to be an open forum. Well, that is not why that page was created. It is only for information dissemintation. There are at least two other local mtbing Facebook pages that are designed for open discussions. So his ire about that perplexes me too.

I have nothing against the man. This all just seems so strange to me.

Oh, quit being such a drama queen, Carl. I have certainly never stated that you do ‘nothing for the community’. There are various efforts underway to stop the Southie trails from becoming a national trash embarrassment, and your refusal to allow these efforts to be posted, or to allow your forum to be used for coordination of trash pickup, deserves your being called out in public.

As I have said, we’ll manage without you.

Anyone know how to describe the start of the BMX Loop?

Is there an actual address, coordinates? Can't remember if there is a Carsonite marker at the start.

Ride the park road out toward Lamar, cross the bridge, go past the Windy Loop entrance, and look for a trailhead on the left. You have to hop the curb.

Total domination of the world of outdoor recreation, obvs.

Here's an overview of the Outside+ strategy from 2021 that lays it out.  The subtext is the bundle, i.e. pay us a BUNCH of $$$ and you get All The Things that they are actively acquiring.

Outside CEO says 40% of new subscribers are choosing its bundle for access to its entire portfolio

A curious strategy - to attempt to monetize your interaction with something which is essentially free - the great outdoors. I see that they have also taken over Pinkbike.

I will probably drop down to the base subscription now. Loved the Garmin integration, but not enough to merit paying when I only use it while traveling.

I think you and I are not alone - we know our local trails well, and only use the app sporadically when traveling. I bet this price hike loses them a chunk of business. They also took over Bikereg - not sure what their ultimate goal is.

Those companies are all in England, not Scotland. And Absoluteblack manufactures most of their stuff in Poland.

There are plenty of great things about Scotland and I would also bet that the Czech Republic would probably make a really shitty whisky and Germany's Haggis is probably inedible. But their precision machining is first rate.

Typical Teutonic nonsense. Maybe give em a chance before you rush to judge?

Celis filed for chapter 11 a few years ago and was able to get backing. The daughter is one of the owners now using the original recipes. But it seems the beer thing is shrinking. Too many breweries brewing the same beers as each other and not enough diversity in styles. IMO Redhorn has the most diverse tap list locally, pretty much something for everyone. Their dark side of the wall event is one of my favorites. Hell Or Highwater brewing in liberty hill does some good stuff too. Thinking the bike industry is following suit.

Celis is probably still experiencing financial difficulties. I believe Uncle Billy’s or Zilker or someone rents a good part of their production facility. The debt load on that fancy building must be high, and in addition, the non-Pierre brews have not made a name for themselves.

  7. Interesting Reddit comments. Will I miss em? No - didn’t visit the tap room often, and didn’t care much for the beer. Tough short-term for the employees - maybe some will find a home at Pinthouse.

Meanwhile, I wonder how much longer Celis will last.

It can be several things. My last squeak that I swore was my BB ended up being my seatpost. During a ride I undid the quick release pulled it up a smidge and re-clamped. Noise was gone. This was of course after removing cranks and retorquing the BB...

    +1 on that.

I suffer from a severe allergic reaction to riding road.

Thanks for the offer just the same. 🙂

It's a trail ride - and a hard one - you just have to sling a few roads together to get between em. Not for everyone, for sure. Mind you, I'll say the same about RHR.

  10. Mandatory re-route to avoid construction on 360 which is impacting the shoulder:

On 360, once you pass the Overlook and the cliff face, the next right is Bold Ruler, which you'll take. Then:

    Left on Canonero Drive
    Left on Waymaker Way
    Right on Round Table Rd
    Right on Riva Ridge Rd
    Left on Carry Back Lane
Cross Westlake Drive and ride THRU Davenport Village. You'll pass La Boulangerie, and if I'm sitting in front of it, I'll buy you a coffee.
From there, exit back onto 360 where there is a five foot shoulder all the way to the bridge. I recommend a good rear blinkie for all the road portions!
I will print these directions out and have them available at the start.

  11. NO unaccompanied minors on this event. If your Bowie Bulldog or VandeViper wants to ride - you, or someone over 18 rides with em, and doesn't drop em! Hope that is claro.

There will be a printed waiver which I will ask everyone to sign at the start. I will post a version here if you want to save time and print it out.
