  1. In my experience, any measurable rain in July brings them out in droves. If rain halts, they’ll be gone in a few weeks.

There is a technique if out running them doesn’t work: (don’t wear bibs, or tight fitting jerseys) Stop. Wave your hands around to keep em off torso and keep a close eye on both legs. Wait for one to land and wait about 1 second. They can’t fly when they’re about to bite. Easy to kill them with a slap. Killed 17 of them once on GB. It’s not fun, but works.

  2. Ya, I’d show that to customer and how it happened. Then let him know it’s weakened because of it and may break, which could cause catastrophic failure. I would have something for customers to sign when/if they decline that states you recommended replacement and risks of not.

  3. Thanks mack-turtle. Super helpful. Combining the PVD stuff made RAD make sense. Thing missing was how you could have same RAD with different lengths/heights on the other two sides of the triangle, so to speak.

A while back, noticed how reluctant I was to stand and pedal on steeper tech. Bar felt too far back when standing to get good leverage on bars when pulling up. Recently lengthened stem (committing new geo heresy) and lowered bar, keeping RAD the same, but really improved bike feel especially on technical ups when out of the saddle. Your spreadsheet helped explain this.

  4. Once again, I've caught someone else pulling on door handles on cars - he's been arrested. Caught a bald man walking his bike down the street around 11:35 PM this evening pulling on car door handles again in our neighborhood. Thank you to the neighbor who helped me out and confronted him as well, apologies if I seemed scattered as I was on the phone with 911. He was arrested and police said he had a very nice bike he was riding on, so if anyone has had their bike stolen, a Niner Sir9, I have a case number for you. .

  5. My book: They like primary colors like red and blue. The darker, the more they like. They are the worst the 7-14 days after any significant rainfall in the months of July and August. When they are literally hunting me down, I stop pedaling and keep them off my torso and arms by waving a bit, and encourage them to land on my legs. They will. And just before they bite, they are completely vulnerable and you can rather easily slap them into oblivion. It kinda detracts from a ride , but it gets the most aggressive ones that will otherwise follow you and likely bite you as u ride. One particular ride on S16 GB i killed something like 17 of them - few years ago. Now I mostly avoid areas with water nearby after any big rain.

  6. Just wait until my 15-20 miles morning rides from my garage go from brushy creek to Waterton Canyon! From almost running over fluffy cotton tail rabbits, to running away from big horn sheep!

And those winter rides to look forward to.

Sour grapes, I’m truly just jealous.

  7. I’ve noticed that on the BCGB, they come soon after heavy rain during the summer. Interesting thing is they don’t really bother when on main trail by the creek, but once u go up to trails like Sweet 16, look out! There are a few techniques- don’t wear primary colors like Blue, if one or more are strafing and u can’t outrun them, stop then wave your hands to keep them off your torso, and wait for one to land on your leg or arm, be ready and wait until they are about to bite (u can see them do this) at that moment they are completely vulnerable and you can easily kill them. I remember one day when I killed like 19 of them.

I’ve also considered treating my riding clothes in permethrin. May try that soon.

  8. On the bright side while riding Brushy with a mask today I avoided ingesting two clouds of gnats and a big grasshopper.
