  1. Saw 2 Sur-rons on the greenbelt yesterday. Not sure how far they got, in my mind these guys were definitely in over their heads. This is part of the problem that we are going to face as mountain bikers. Some bonewipe is gonna knock over a hiker or break their neck. And the city will crank down indiscriminately. This risks trail access for all of us.
  2. A particular spot with a small technical drop (18” with a stump and a root to navigate) followed by a challenging 3-tree treegate. As a mediocre rider I could clear it 100% of the time. It added challenge. You removed it. You suck. I hope you flat on every ride. Multiple times.
  3. You've been using 'bonewipe' for 3+ years now. Maybe time for a new pejorative? https://austinmountainbiking.com/index.php?/search/&q=bonewipe&quick=1&type=forums_topic
  4. I could never get to an R&I when I was working at Dell because there were always 5:00 meetings because some bonewipe would say "that's the only time I have open..." I started doing 6AM WC laps then hit the showers at work. It was great. Well, actually it sucked, but it was better than not riding.

Well, before we start bashing on the police, it is *generally* a few bad apples. The problem is that there has not been any accountability regarding cleaning out the bad apples. Don't paint them all with the same broad brush. That is no different than judging all mountain bikers by the bonewipe who cuts off hikers at high speed or rides with a bluetooth speaker.
  6. The nylon washer was @mack_turtle's idea. My thought is that nylon on carbon is less likely to "break" the carbon than some bonewipe like me putting a big ass aluminum washer on there that digs into the frame when there is some cross flex from landing weird. If the ME's think that having the aluminum washer against the frame is a better idea then I am all ears because I am not an engineer in the least. There was a rubber gasket that came with the bolt. If ALU is the right call is it: Carbon frame <> ALU washer <> Rubber gasket <> Bolt And, yes, the the bolt holds the hanger to the frame.
  7. Even though I am tubeless I carry a tube and a pump. All of the fancy bacon strips and other plugs are great in theory, but when you are riding with a bunch of people and you flat on a tubeless setup, bite the bullet and put a tube in and just move on. Some of the most frustrating times on a bike include standing around on the side of the trail while some bonewipe tries his 3rd or 4th "trick" to fix his tubeless setup while everyone stands around watching him. This has happened far too often. I got to the ride early last Saturday and noticed my rear tire was losing air. Immediately popped a tube in. 10 minutes and I was ready to go, before some of the other people even showed up. Contrast that with the guy that has run out of CO2 because he's already tried multiple "solutions" to fix his tire and everyone around him is starting to taste the beer at that point... Oh, and another tip. Until you are really, really dialed in on your bike and riding every week, always show up a half hour early. Get your bike set up and pedal it a half mile in the parking lot. This will help you ensure that everything is ready to go. I hate the people that pull up at 8:59 for a 9:00 ride and have to get dressed, pump up their tires and check their drivetrain. Do you friends a favor, get there early. Better yet, do all of that at home before you even leave.
  8. I have done the math because the wife is from New Orleans. first, you have to live with their times. I wake up early and can be our the door. 30 mins to the airport, security, waiting for your flight, some stupid delay, land, wait for every bonewipe ahead of you to get off the plane, get off, get a rental car, drive to where you were going. Congratulations, you could have driven there already. No bike rental, you have your bike, ready to go. As a 2.5M+ mile flyer, with tons of free flights, I recommend driving.
  9. Went to ozone. Literally had cash in my pocket. Told them I was there to buy a bike. The bonewipe talking to me kept bragging about his bike. Told me to pick it up. "Look how light it is." Kept going on and on about his bike. Told me "this is what you need to buy." Never once asked me about my riding, my needs, what I wanted, where I rode, how experienced I was. Not one single question. But was thoroughly convinced that I need to buy this bike now. I walked out. Drove down to BSS. Bought a bike that day. Because I literally had the money in my pocket. I am sure there are many reasons that Ozone is out of business. They did good service (when Todd was there) but they clearly had some gaps in their process.
  10. 5GHz is a pickup truck and 2.4GHz is a Prius. 5GHz will give you significantly better throughput, but that throughput drops off quickly as you step away from it. 2.4GHz does a better job of going through walls and obstacles, but it does not give you the bandwidth that you get from 5. The cool thing is, if both bands share the same SSID, the client will decide the best option, which is why you may see two identical devices connecting on different bands based on distance. The client is almost always smarter than you, so when you try to "force" one over the other (like having a 5GHz and 2.4GHz SSID with different names) you usually end up sub optimizing your signal. As for extenders, unless they are wired, you're gonna get a shitty experience. For the most part extenders (not mesh) simply mask the signal. And they suck up dedicated bandwidth for that benefit. So your extender is no better and everything still suffers. Mesh systems do a better job of handling this situation. The other issue with the extender is that extenders don't do handoff. In their world every WiFi access point (main or extender) believes it is the only device in the world, so if you are moving around, as you move away from one and literally stand next to the other one it does not want to give up the signal and you stay connected, barely, to the one on the other side of the house. I use WiFi Explorer https://www.intuitibits.com to scan my house and find the best channels. You can set your APs to use non-overlapping channels (1, 6, 11 in the US) in 2.4GHz. Find the one with the least amount of interference and choose that. Stay away from "auto channel" on your router. Auto only works once, the first time the router starts. If it picks a bad channel you're stuck with it. Also, you may find your bonewipe neighbors using overlapped channels (2,3,4,5,7,7,9,10) - If you find this, politely explain to them that they are being an asshole. So many people think (well, everyone is on Channel 1 so I'll use channel 2 and have it all to myself. But Channel 1 is actually 1-3 in frequency. So the guy on Channel 2 is seen as interference and you lose bandwidth. And here is the funny part - if he stuck to channel 1, with both of you on the same channel, you'd both get better signal. The deal is that wifi systems with share and coexist on the same channel, but ONLY the same channel. So two on channel 1 will take turns. But one on 1 and one on 2 will fight with each other all day long. Here is an example from my neighborhood (dense central Austin): As you can see I have idiots around me running on 2 and 8. And trust me, I have screamed in the neighborhood about it. They're like people who don't believe in masks, apparently their science is better. Also setting your channel width can have a big impact. If you can give me more specifics about your wifi setup I might be able to give you specific tips.
  11. I am a firm believer in HF for those "single use" tools. I had a screwed up bottom bracket that I needed to remove and went to HF and bought a pipe wrench for a few bucks. Did the job. If I got to 55 years on this earth and never needed a pipe wrench before now, I think an HF tool is fine because at this rate, I won't need one until I hit 110. That being said I had to replace my vise grips and even though I had a 45 year old pair of cheap Taiwanese knock offs (huge sentimental value, now in the hands of that tool thief bonewipe...) they were replaced with the real deal, branded tools, because I use them a lot.
  12. This morning, at the hospital. Everyone in masks. And then this bonewipe: yeah, it is “on”....
  13. Self employed. One of my primary customers (small public tech company) has pushed everyone remote. The CEO was never a big fan of WFH but apparently is allowing it for now. The funny part is that I find people more responsive these days than I had in the past when they were in an office environment. My other client develops online content and my writing has shifted from data center topics to more about home networks/remote networking. At AustinBike World Headquarters there has been a decidedly hard focus on making sure all of the correspondents are on a bike as much as possible. But on streets. Had my first endo in a long time yesterday. Some bonewipe (who later said "hey dude I know the rules of the road") almost took me out. Spectacular nosewheelie on lockup and a flip over the bars on pavement. That never happened in the office.
  14. Some bonewipe was putting these up on the greenbelt, nailing them into trees. Totally misguided. I have my suspicions....
  15. I was on the hike and bike trail trying to get around some bonewipe with headphones riding in the middle of the trail. Kept ringing my bell, nothing. Then I yelled "hey" and he finally heard me. When I passed him I said "you need to turn that down a bit" and he said "you don't own the trail" like some smug asshole. To which I replied "either do you" and all the people around got a good laugh.
  16. I have been on the streets unfortunately. My bigger concern on the trails is not some bonewipe sneezing on me, but crashing into me and requiring a trip to the ER. I don't want to be consuming medical resources unnecessarily. Between several medical issues going on right now, I am pretty much writing off 2020 for mountain biking. Normally someone buys a bike and the rain keeps us off the trails. Who bought something that brought this on????
  17. There was a ton of sanitation on the new Violet Crown portion of the GB (as well as other places). Someone is digging those drainage ditches. It reminds me of the bonewipe that was doing trail modifications and hanging the laminated "trail maintenance guides" on the GB a few years ago. I have a theory about the trail guide person's identity now. I think they are on this board. Just F---ing Stop It. Now.
  18. Again, not to get too specific, but what is this saying to the person doing the cutting? Trail closure? For a weekend? For a month? For motos? For bikes? All the trail? Part of the trail? Still too nebulous in my mind. Think about the message (I'm in marketing, it's my job): 1. Identify the bonewipe here (i.e. the person doing the cutting) 2. Specify EXACTLY what is wrong (i.e. cutting cheater lines, not "new trail") 3. Explain what happens if they don't stop (i.e. WE lose access, forever.) "Altering trails will get bikes permanently banned from this park. " City park does get closed from time to time for Moto races or other things. Saying trail closure does not really specify what is at stake. Just my 2 cents.
  19. Not to nit pick (but this is the internet after all) but I think you're focusing in the wrong direction. The bonewipe that is doing this a.) probably doesn't believe that what they are doing is "unauthorized trail" and b.) doesn't really grasp what "prohibited" means. For instance they might think that if they are caught they'll have to go put the branches back up. I'm a fan of: "Hey, you, the guy cutting cheater lines. This type of trail modification may result in bikes being banned on the trails. Stop it now. <ARR logo>" Somehow you need to get the point across that this is not about them getting caught doing something unauthorized and that the punishment hits the whole community. Right now my guess is that they view it as a "victimless crime" and that nothing will come of their work. We need to help them understand the ramifications. The APR and BCP logos actually detract and may have the opposite effect for you. This should be bikers telling bikers to cut it out.
  20. I'd look like a real bonewipe with those on my legs 😉
  21. Rode Brushy today. Rode Peddlers today. Anyone complaining about that trail needs to pick up a shovel and get to work. This is the only trail in the area where we are getting new trail on a consistent basis and seeing the support of the city. Yeah, we get trail work at WC (I've done some myself this year) but it is not really adding much new trail (we got a bit of it over the past few years) but work now is mainly repairing trail from water damage and bonewipe riders. Somehow WillCo is doing a better job than CoA on supporting trails. Is it Bentonville? Not by a long shot. But Bentonville has a different terrain than we have, they have dirt, we have rock. Peddlers is fine and I am happy to have it, even if it does not feel like Slaughter Pens or the Back 40. Ride it. Love it. Live it.
  22. I was attacked by two smaller dogs that chased me at ~15-18MPH in the lot and then for about 1000 yards. Every time my foot went down on a pedal stroke they went for my foot. No leashes. No collars. And the owner was a total bonewipe about it. People suck.
  23. Yes, Brian is totally right, anything that threatens access is bad. My real concern is not that they do more damage, but if landowners (including the city of Austin) decide to ban then, and some bonewipe decides to ride his anyway, we'll see real problems. But where I see the real conflict coming is not with all of us. I see the real conflict getting played out on Strava 🙂
  24. I saw a bonewipe on Burnet, north of 45th, taking the right hand lane. He was blocking rush hour traffic, even thought there is a 6' wide sidewalk that he could have been riding on. Full-on hipster with the beard and sunglasses. I ride that stretch all the time to get to pinthouse and I use the sidewalk because a.) it's legal, b.) it's safer and c.) it maximizes the traffic flow for the drivers.
