Completely non-bike injury but bike related outcome. Wife was diagnosed with shingles a little over a week ago and has been on meds for almost week. She seems to be getting over the worst of it, and actually went out for a ride today on SATN. The virus and downtime had definitely taken its toll on her fitness. Stuff that she used to climb/clean with no issues was really giving her trouble.

Glad to see her tough it out and keep going though. She is way too young to have shingles and without a doubt was brought on by stress. I did beat her having them at 36🤬

F#ck those things

Dang, that's no fun. I hope her recovery continues to go smoothly.

Being aged, I've had the regular shingles vax plus the super effective Shingrix 2-shot dealio, so hope I'll avoid that fate.

Are you both able to get the Shingrix vaccine?  It's usually available at HEB.

Throughout all this, my major injuries include breaking my collar bone in 2008 when someone rode up behind me while I was on a teeter-totter, which resulted and me falling off the high end, as I fully expected it to drop like it did every other time.

I immediately remembered this story when I saw this sign...

I can't even guess why someone would follow another onto a teeter. How do they think that thing works?

You can see this one at the top left of the photo. But this is the shortest/tallest that I've ever seen. I'd really like to see it done before I do it.

Good to hear. I stuck my head outside this week and the heat is finally breaking, so I might go for my usual "Nap on the Trail Ride" if you need some recovery rides.

I have known you long enough to know you disappear in late spring only to emerge in the fall. Ill ping ya.

On Wednesday Not long after this picture my friend was walking up a slope after crossing a stream.  Stepped on the wrong rock and it was like a trap door opened and he was gone... Slid 15' down the side of the Colorado Trail.

Some hours later he chose the wrong line after crossing Engineer Two Peak and went OTB and tumbled 45 yards down the backside.  He powered on for 7 more hours (6 walking in the dark) to Hut.  Next morning we abandoned the ride and I took him down on gravel (and mud).  Got him home Saturday, Sunday to ARC to learn two cracked ribs, partially deflated lung and cant even imagine where all the bruises are.

some time around last December-January, I has two minor incidents on BCGB trails on separate rides. one was a slow-motion falling over that wrenched my left arm up over my head. the second was a helmet-bounce off a very immoveable tree. I ignored it for a while but I could not ride very long before burning and numbness overtook my left arm and hand. it was diagnosed as a pinched nerve and the doc at my PCP office gave me some stretches and muscle relaxers. the stretches were minimally helpful and the muscle relaxers made me totally useless in the daytime.

I sought help from a physical therapist and visited her at least a dozen times in spring and early summer. I was feeling 100% and rode Castell Grind with no problems. I said I was feeling good enough to not need any more help and she released me.

then two weeks ago, I went on a short, chill ride around the neighborhood with the wife on the gravel bike and my fingers went numb, left hand only, before I reached the end of the block. my neck and left shoulder feel wrecked. so I'm going back to PT next week. very grateful that they were able to get me back in and work with insurance! my PT was all exercises and stretches and massage. she recommended dry needling the last time and I turned it down, but I'm willing to try anything at this point.

I can ride my mountain bike with no apparent problems, but the drop bar bike kills me. I could mitigate that by altering my setup on the gravel bike, but that does not account for why my left side hurts, and my right is fine. I don't want to cover up an injury, I want to heal it.

It sounds like you have the right idea.  I think if you're active you just need to accept that you'll be doing some form of PT for life.  You've gotta fight to keep 100% function and ROM for as long as possible.

I watch my kids effortlessly drop into deep squats and it reminds me of a deficiency I have, so I'm working on it.

Definitely sounds like time to see a specialist, like a spine guy (or woman).  They can do electrical conduction test or other tests/scans to see where the problem is originating, or perhaps there's an underlying condition and your injury tapped into it.

My guy is Eduardo Elizando at Center for Healing and Integrative Medicine, but there are a zillion ortho/spine folks here in Austin, so maybe look for a sports oriented spine person.

If the muscle relaxers did not help you, then don’t just throw them away because that can create environmental issues. I can help you dispose of them properly.

part of my job is educating people about this, and it's great advice! the main problem seems to be people flushing drugs down the toilet. I cringe whenever I see someone doing that in movies, which happens a lot. I promote National Drug Take-Back Day every year. https://takebackday.dea.gov/#psaseries401

As I've discovered, most pharmacies will take your drugs back with no problems. I need to see if I still have those drugs because they might help me sleep when my shoulder is bugging me. I just don't want any habits.

I used those muscle relaxers once or twice and they really f-ed me up. I would not give them to anyone. I had a family member die horribly a few years ago from a drug overdose after becoming addicted to prescription drugs. I appreciate the attempt at humor, but it's still pretty raw and not really funny.

rampaging alligators addicted to meth that was flushed down the toilet is terrifying and might be a great plot device for a movie, though.

  • 1 month later...

Went out for a 15 mile ride Sunday and came home to extreme back pain. Two ambulance rides later I have been diagnosed with three bulging discs, totally wrecking my sciatic nerve. Never been in so much pain.

Going to see specialist this week. Yay me

100% I'm not even that old but to stay active I find myself digging up more and more PT/PE exercises to avoid pain, especially from areas that have been previously injured.

If someone hated Hondas because there's didn't last very long but they never maintained it you'd blame lack of maintenance. Plus older/ more high strung machines generally require more maintenance.

Dude , my wife's Vietnam vet stepdad had a pill collection that would've made Michael Jackson jealous. We tried multiple pharmacies and had a hell of time getting them to take them. Put them in a box in the attic until we can drop them off somewhere.Agree, were not flushing that shit. Our water is already fukt enough.

Dabbled in my fair share of hard drugs in the 90s and luckily never had issues with addiction. Once something felt a little to habitual, I dropped it. Sometimes reduction can be addictive too.

Man dude I'm so sorry to hear this! I know how debilitating back pain can be. It's also one of the most over operated on conditions we suffer from. Get more than one opinion if you can, and give your body some rest.

Thanks man. Surgery is going to be an absolute last resort. From what they described it's somewhat mild so I'll know more about options after todays visit.

Pain came on about 14 miles into my ride and progressively got worse until I couldn't move, around 2am. Took 10mg of Valium, 400mg of Motrin, called EMS who shot me up with fentanyl then the ER gave additional anti inflammatorries an steroids, all oral though. By 9am the next morning I was curled up in my shower, unable to move again.

2nd trip to ER was morphine and strong steroids and anti inflammatorries. All injected. That seemed to do the trick and I  can at least get up and go to the bathroom now.

100%.  My wife has had disk replacement and that worked for many years until the next set of vertebra started to collapse.  They wanted to do more surgery but instead she got cortisone shot (took 2 tries) to relieve swelling and pain enough to allow physical therapy and that made a hell of a difference.  I’d say she is even more able and strong than before the pain.  She worked with a pain management specialist rather than an orthopedic surgeon.

I've used Dr Marks from DIAGNOSTIC PAIN CENTER  for quite a few years now. My entire Lumbar disks are ruptured along with the facet joints. Marks uses a Fluoroscope to inject steroid into the disks, which can be very precise and repeatable. I also have my facet joint nerves burnt off occasionally. No pain meds, other than advil when needed. I can't recommend enough.

Got back from my PCP. Didn't seem too alarmed and recommended physical therapy. Luckily, my doctor and rehab is through Baylor Scott and White and is also located at the entrance to my neighborhood making the process pretty darn easy. Living in a pseudo retirement community, I have a lot of neighbors who go there, and they are really pleased with the results. Worst case they recommend I get a shot, so that was really encouraging.

IMHO, this is something that's been around for a while (decades) and age has just finally caught up with me. Glad to have some options before it got too bad.

Lastly, thanks going out to you guys for the encouragement and advice!

Whenever I'm down about how beaten and broken my body is, I think of you and find solace. 😆
