Cougar sighting, no the other one

Took him long enough to throw a rock. I dont have that much patience.

I was thinking he was afraid to bend over and get close to the ground. You're supposed to make yourself look bigger and more intimidating and bending over does the opposite of that. So it's a tough calculation as the cat is getting closer. But yeah, I agree now that we've seen it. Get some rocks at first sight.

We have seen two Bobcats recently at the house, both of which had one of our chickens in their mouths.  Because we have chickens we see lots of critters.  Everybody loves chicken.  We’ve had many raccoons, foxes, possums, ringtail cats, snakes, etc.   As apex predators go I definitely prefer the bobcat over the mountain lion.

The cat in that viral Utah video was not chasing or stalking him. If the cat saw him as prey, she would have waited in the bush for him to pass close, then jumped out and killed him. This cat was escorting an intruder away from her cubs. Again, if this was stalking, he'd be dead.

Once on a nighttime Crank n Drank ride, I was straggling behind the group that I was following and I heard something crashing in the undergrowth behind me. Then I heard it again. Either a deer was running away from me in the dark, or something else was going on. I started searching the ground in front of me for sticks and rocks that might help me. I wanted to ride faster but also didn't want to loose control and have to stop or fall. I entered a clearing and all that stopped.

My oldest son hates it!  He will eat it b/c I tell him that's what's for dinner...but he never could come to terms with the fact that the name of the meat is the same as the name of the living thing.  My youngest then tried to claim he couldn't eat vegetables because they were once alive....

I knew someone who was starting in med school and learning about human anatomy. she could not eat anything that had clearly defined muscles after a few weeks because it reminded her of the cadavers she was studying. perhaps there's something to that.

if a cat wants to eat you, she's not going to slowly march toward you and look scary. she's gonna hide in a tree and eat your face when you're least expecting it.

This should serve as a lesson in dealing with a Mountain Lion encounter. Dude came away unscathed, albeit with probably a bit of poo in his undershorts.

haha dude scary as F! id much rather it be a cat than a bear though that for damn sure! you have a much better chance of survival and could probably overpower an animal that size but would still get F'd up!

No way.  I'd take a (non Grizzly) bear over a Mountain Lion all day.  Usually the big cats don't mess around and you get killed.  The bears quite often want to avoid you and not be bothered.  IMHO the chances of scaring off a bear by bluffing him are much greater.

I just got back from 3.5 weeks of outdoors'ing with most of it being in the CO back country.  Here's the order of my concern: Lightning, mtn lion, (non grizzly) bear.

Later,
CJB

Carbon conducts, and even if it was plastic, remember that lightning just went through a mile or so of just air.  It's not going to care whether you're riding on an insulated bike or rubber shoes or a rubber hat.

Yep, that difference of potential (volts) going through your bike to ground (ohms) creates a lot of flowing electrons (amps).

Lightning pretty much always wins.

So wearing a condom doesn't help? Good to know.

  • 2 weeks later...

These "rare events" seem to be happening with increasing frequency.

EDIT: Here's the link to the hauntingly familiar story from just a couple of years ago not too far from this most recent attack.
