Nando
Thinking of a new bike: Fully rigid. 27.5 plus or fat 2.6 to 3” tires 1x whatever (geared, don’t care about exact number) disc brakes To use mostly as urban bike, but also use as backup on the trail. Low budget. Discuss. Edited August 20, 2019 by Nando (revised for clarity)
Chongo Loco
Karate Monkey...geared, SS, 29, 27.5+, boost, 100/142...does it all. Build it with what you got or scrounge, up grade if you want. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
mack_turtle
Surly Lowside, Kona Unit, All City Log Lady if you can still find one. Any bike that was designed around a 100mm fork can probably take a rigid fork without adverse side effects. Buy something with a crappy fork and replace it with a Surly fork.
Cafeend
What size? How tall are you approx?
Tree Magnet
Trek Stache 5 or 7. 29+ works great for SS. Cheap. Good riding position. Fun as hell.

AustinBike
Nando, I am skipping town to go to Chicago and beat the heat. If you want to borrow my kona unit SS to get a feel for it, let me know, I can bring it to the R&I. I have ridden it on some of the WC trails as a skin(ier) tired broke, it now has some slightly fatter tires on it, but still street tires. Good solid frame that can be built up to a trail hardtail pretty fast.

mack_turtle
Almost all of the "single speed" bikes on the market have a derailer hanger, in case you decide to puss out with gears. If you're hardcore, you take a hacksaw to it.

And his SWB has even longer chain stays than his original bike. I do think it would make a killer touring bike, but not a lot of singletrack fun. mack_turtle
I would like to ride a Jones some time, just out of curiosity. His choices are unconventional but people who ride them love them. For my particular style of wrangling the bike, it seems like it would not work though.

I might have a nice steel hardtail with some decent components (SRAM x.0, Chris King wheels, etc.) that I can get in your budget. We should talk.

My next one is something you’re describing. However next year I plan to move out west into the snow, so I’m probably going to hold off this year and go full on fat bike next year. Most likely a Surly Ice Cream Truck and just rip that thing anywhere. Edited August 20, 2019 by bestbike85
