Need a Med 26" Hardtail frame & matching fork for my oldest...

My oldest recently shot up in height and needs a bike to ride to school and occasional light trail riding; his 14" frame Kona isn't cutting it anymore... plus his younger brother also long-outgrew his 20" MTB and needs the 14" 26er...

Soooo...

Since I have some 26" wheels and some other parts, I'm looking for a 26" hardtail, medium (17-18") with QR dropouts and disc mounts... preferably with a straight 1-1/8 headtube.
I'll also need a fork to match, in the 100mm range, but depending on the make/model, I might be able to reduce the travel as needed if you have something longer...

-OR-

I'd also be open to a complete bike of the same size/ description, for the right price...

Whatcha got for a tight budget?

I have a small 29er trek stache with fork. Was going to be for my 11 yo but somehow she is 5 3" and has long arms and legs such that she rides my medium.

It needs to be a 17" minimum, he's 5'9". I'd also like to stick with 26" wheels, since that's what I have, plus 26" frames etc will be older and thus cheaper; I'm hoping to spend no more than $200 on the frame and fork... I don't have any 29ers, so that would end up being a money pit to build.

If RA stuff doesn't work out then let me know.  I'm in the middle of a cannabalization project where I will prolly have a significant portion of a full bike available in this size range.  Its a medium Cannondale, with a traditional straight steer fork (and disc brakes).  In very good condition and probably without wheels (and stem/bar).

The NS CLASH frame is on sale for only $179 right now.

I have an NS Surge Evo which I think is a great all-around freeride/Trail/DJ frame.  It's a 17" seat tube, but it's actually a Large, so maybe the reach is too long for him.

Where? Their USA website doesn't show frames for sale...

This is the Schwinn Mesa. It’s a larger frame than the Fisher and weighs maybe a lb more. Again, not disc ready, but will accept conversion kit. This is a ‘02/‘03 model and was sold in bike shops, not big box.

Although it says 21”, I think it will fit more like a 19”.

This is the Giant Warp DS1... '02 version... Size medium.

I’ve got a shock that fits

Bearings seem tight.

Great reviews online.

Again, not disc compatible, but will take conversion kit.

I have the Rock Shox fork that came with it (matches yellow).

This is the Fisher Mako.  Just a touch over 3lbs frame weight. Is not disc compatible, but conversion kits are available and not expensive. Size is 16.

Thanks for all the pics/efforts, but he's already outgrown 15/16" (16s tend to be much shorter TT/reach than the 17-18 range) and still growing, and 19" would be the max I'd want to put him on right now (he'll grow into it in a year or so). I'm ruling out FS for simplicity/maintenance/parts availability purposes; I'll be his tech, and I don't want to be tasked with linkage maintenance, chasing squeaks, creaks, etc.

No problem... I needed to get things going with these builds, so you got me started.

Saw this at Yellowbike last week... May work for you... $200.

Jamis... 17"... Mixture of Deore/XT drive components... RST Gila fork (one of the better ones).

Actually... Just did some research on the fork... Not good reviews. So budget for a fork if you consider this bike.

Nice meeting you today @gotdurt, I hope the growing teen gets a lot of joy from those parts. ☺️

Good meeting you too John, he's pretty excited about having an adult sized bike, even if he has to mount with a rolling start for a little while as he grows into it 😄
