So with the blanket/mat, am I tying the bike down in the bed? otherwise, what keeps it sliding back and forth along the tailgate? Sorry, I'm a total noob at this. ddwithrow
I have used one of the Yakima tailgate pads for a few years and I like it. One thing to look out for -- I just bought a new Silverado, and now the tailgates are "powered," which means there is a button on the dash that lowers the tailgate. I think it's stupid, but it's also dangerous if the button gets pressed accidentally when the bikes are there. Fortunately the power tailgate does not function unless the truck is in park, but still seems risky to me. To answer your question about sliding around, my bikes have always gripped the pad well and don't move much at all.

Morealice
If choosing only one option... No brainer for me. Hitch rack and something sensible. I have had the Thule T2 for 10+ years and it’s simple and durable. I had a chick rear end me and it did nothing. Her bumper was in the street though.😬 I would worry about a pad messing up my paint, not to mention the bike(s) hogging up valuable bed space. Plus I have never ridden park and the pads seem real endurbro. 🤡

Picked up it used on ebay. - https://www.thule.com/en-us/us/bike-rack/truck-bed-bike-racks/thule-insta-gater-_-18344 I also use the Insta-gator and love it: fast, simple, & secure. I have a 2nd one for when my buddy joins me, both purchased used on craigslist. I have a standard length bed 2001 Chevy SIlverado and my friend's XL bike only has about 1" extra clearance. But that's with the bike straight. turning the bike might make it work on a short bed.
