What is Gravel Biking?

You can actually get the Salsa Journeyman specified with flat bars. There are options out there for you!

Damn! This is great/not so good news!  I don't really "need" another bike.  This information will gnaw at my brain like a beaver on meth.

OK, gotta go!  *googles Salsa website*

Update: OK, so I went to the Salsa website and OH! MY! GAWD! They have a single speed gravel bike called The Stormchaser.  Then somehow I got distracted by watching old SNL The Californian skits.  So, back to Salsa now.

Stormchaser was released last week. It hasn’t even hit retailers around here yet. It is very similar to the journeyman in terms for geometry, but SS. Cool bike.

Looking forward to a new bike thread soon!

Maybe new bikes can be financed for the ridiculous 84 something months and deferred 120 day 1st payment @ 0% apr.
I keep hearing these ads this weekend for new cars and thought if only I can snag that new Evil Chamois Hagar for that deal... hmmm.
Cash is king for me though.

I saw a reference to the Evil Chamois Hagar and thought "what a weird name for a bike" before I had the "Aha" moment.

Sammy Hagar, y'all.

I think it's their follow up to the Chamois Davis Jr. I don't think they've made a  Chamois Sosa.

Excellent!  I adore punny stuff, and that is perfect.  I'm inclined to contact Evil to ask the age of the person that came  up with this.  Could be a boomer.

I quite like it. I fully intend to get one at some point, or something like it if a much lower priced variant is produced by someone else.

Flared drop-bars.

My new flares are AWESOME!  Hit some random things today on my wander around the 'hood route.  MUCH more stable than skinny roadie bars.  Getting rid of all my 42/46cm bars that are useless.  Flared for the Win

This would be my second choice from the Chamois Hagar. Adjustable geo via fork axle flip chip. Cinelli King Zydeco.

We're been mashing up "what is gravel biking" and "what bike to ride on gravel" and we've made great progress on this rocky (but very, very small rocks) issue, so now I need to know,

Where is gravel?  What is the closest 20-mile gravel ride to Austin or even a 10-mile out and back?

Texas has been great on paving ranch-to-market and farm-to-market roads all over the place.  Where's the gravel?

It is still quite steep though. It will not be quite the fun Chamois Hagar would induce.

As much as I dig the CH, I just can't see me paying that much for a carbon gravel/touring bike, when I don't even like the concept that much. I was thinking...you could go much cheaper with a custom steel frame built to the CH's geo, but maybe add some track-ends for more fun options, or even shorten the CS. You could even add a Lauf gravel fork and stay way under the CH price.

How would a ride the CH do on trails like Brushy?

I think that it would be fun on most all of it except DD

I would certainly ride it at Walnut and SATN. Brushy would be fun too, but for a different reason. My problem is that my wrists start killing me if I do too much tech without suspension. That's why I think the Lauf gravel would be good for what I'm looking to do. It seriously took my wrists 6 months to recover from two different rides I did at Brushy with my Monstertour.

I had a gravel/cx bike and it's one of the few I regret selling. Did a few rides on the granite walking trails around my neighborhood, but spent most of my time on SATN and a couple times out at brushy and san marcos.

Riding a gravel bike on MTB trails is pure fun with a few moments of terror thrown in once you start carrying speed. Makes some of the mundane green/blue-ish trails come to life. I caught myself giggling like an idiot more than once.

Will definitely buy another one.

Now that I fixed my handlebar problems I 100% agree.  I really enjoyed picking the lines very carefully on my GG bike at the discovery well cave preserve.  I was also able to ride to the trail faster than I could on a MTB.

I’ve been also known to ride my road bike with 28c slicks in other trails as well.  You just have to be more careful when cornering but it keeps you on your toes and makes you forever laugh at all the pointing that goes on at little gravel piles during group road rides.

Few yrs back before I learned the value of backup bikes .. I broke a frame and was without a bike. A buddy of mine here in my hood lent me a old Kona SS MB with drop bars to use while I waited for a new frame. I just remember how much fun that was. I am seriously tempted to put drop bars on my Ventana SS.

I just pulled the trigger on a 27.5+ steel gravel/adventure bike. Going to outfit it with a 110mm fox 32 and hit just about any trails out there.
