mack_turtle
That Ashe juniper crap is destroying my riding, not to mention my everything else. I am on some meds to make my life worth living (Flonase, Claratin, cough drops, etc) but going outside to ride a bike will probably make it worse. In the meantime, what else works for you? I am considering buying a mask so I don't have to spend the next month hiding indoors, but anything that does not make me look like an avian flu refugee is ridiculously expensive. SCWells72
It hit me HARD over the past few weeks. I got a steroid shot on December 30th and feel much, much better. Obviously not an ideal solution, but better than the alternative IMO.
CrossPlane
I feel your pain! A huge help, although only so effective, is to try a nasal rinse, doing that after riding/being outside and taking a shower (on top of, several allergy meds and nasal sprays [emoji2357]) usually is enough to keep me from getting sick.Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
ATXZJ
Used to get it really bad during my first time living in Austin. Moved away to the west for a decade, came back was no longer effected. However, I now work outside, and my stress levels have decreased significantly. My diet is also light-years ahead of where I was. crazyt
if you do a nasal rinse, use sterile water.
AntonioGG
20 minutes ago, crazyt said: if you do a nasal rinse, use sterile water. I used to use the Neti-Med bottle (it pressurizes your nasal passages so it really helps when things are bad like during a sinus infection), but my Dr also cautioned me about making sure the water is sterile (I was buying distilled water, but you can also boil it). Â He recommended instead a pressurized saline spray. Â Arm & Hammer is my favorite and I use it daily. Having said all that, I've looked into pollution masks mostly b/c I am very concerned with PM2.5 particles on high pollution days (highly recommend TCEQ daily e-mail subscription for air quality). Â I don't care what I look like if I feel like I'll be protected from PM2.5.
circuitbreaker
New treatment for cedar fever, other allergies: just three shots https://www.austin360.com/entertainmentlife/20191022/new-treatment-for-cedar-fever-other-allergies-just-three-shots  this was in the new at the end of last year. my wife was already doing traditional allergy shots, which have help alot, but once those wear off, she will do this. Cafeend
The "cure" to me is always worse in my opinion I just deal with it and let nature take its course. I've found it rarely bothers me that much. Although it is more noticeable this year, I wont let it stop me. TheX
I'm VERY thankful that it doesn't seem to have any effect on me.
AustinBike
I will try to pull the pics of me a few years ago from the server, I puffed up like a porcupine with cedar. My new regimen is below. Cedar serum (should have started in December or even November) - 15 drops in a glass of water that you sip all day Claritin-type anithistimine (10mg of Loratadine) every morning It's a bitch, but you can power through. I use the antihistamine not only for sinuses but also for skin. Â
Sluggo
Fexofenadine works for me and I start taking it 2 to 3 weeks before the cedar bombs go off. I also get a few cedar shots every year from running into those bastards while riding.
Yosmithy
Although, Cedar does affect me, I've found that molds are now more likely to kick my ass than Cedar. They both suck either way.
4fun
My routine is start a regimen of 12hr Sudafed, naproxen for anti-inflammatory effects, zyrtec, and daily neti-pot a month prior to cedar, add aloway antihistamine eye drops, Flonase, and night Benadryl when cedar is here. I discontinue Flonase when the nose bleeds start. I always make sure I take a shower when I come inside if I've been outside for more than 10 minutes and neti-pot following. When the counts are high I wear a spandex baclava to keep me from breathing in lots of pollen, and goggles (tried N-95 mask and Fogs up goggles) when I ride. I look really rediculous, but people get out of your way  on the trail. # Austin sucks for 3 months. I also did immunotherapy shots for 3 years without results. St.Bernardo
I've had good luck with this. Available at My HEB. Pollen-Allergy-Relief-Remedy-Easy-Breather-Herbalgoic-1oz_2048x.webp
Tree Magnet
When the counts are high I wear a spandex baclavaIs a spandex baclava tastier than regular baclava? I think you meant balaclava but I really like the idea of wearing a Greek desert to fight cedar!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
AustinBike
I also bought some surgical masks and toss a few in my camelbak in a ziplock bag for those days when you know the numbers are gonna be off the charts. I's rather be Michael Jackson (with 2 gloves on) than be sitting on the couch. The only down side to the masks is that they will make my glasses fog. Taking off the glasses exposes the eyes to cedar, so your option is to have itchy eyes or overall respiratory problems. I'll take the eyes over lungs any day. RidingAgain
I know I've said this before... But it's worth reminding... Apple Cider Vinegar... It really helps. Â I take a tablespoon in the morning in some juice. If I'm feeling bad in the afternoon I may take another one.
RidingAgain
Also... Consider things that you are eating... If you are consuming stuff that works against your good health, then you're just causing yourself to be more susceptible to things such as allergies. Over the last year I have found out from personal experience just how related to good health my gut is. So seriously... Maybe there are a few food/drink items you can cut out for the allergy season that will help you get through it a little easier. Sugar being at the top of the list. Bart
I moved to Austin in 05 from Houston and never had any allergy issues until Cedar Fever hit me hard the following yr. So bad I lost hearing in 1 ear from sinus snot slinging hell. Went to a specialist and got some type of steroid shot which fixed me right up within a couple days and have never had any issues since. Bamwa
Luckily I dont get cedar fever but I get hayfever around Sept 1. Â If I sneeze for more than two days straight I get an allergy shot, then I'm good until the next year. I could never handle some if the stuff described above. hurronnicane
On a related note, my son just got a full-face helmet and reported that you can’t perform the snot-rocket maneuver while wearing it.
AustinBike
Did 16 miles out on the greenbelt yesterday with my combo of cedar serum and generic Claritin. Worked great, significantly less mucus than a typical ride. YMMV, everyone's body is different.
Charlie193
My wife has been getting allergy shots for a couple of years and they’ve been working really well, especially with sinus headaches. Not sure if it’s a common side-effect but she does get pretty wiped out the day of the shot. They’ve definitely been effective though.
