If you're into documentaries, Peter Jackson's "They Shall Not Grow Old" was an absolute stunner. We saw it in the theater with a special behind-the-scenes after show and it blew us away. If you know anything about Peter Jackson, you know that he has access to endless resources to special effects. He took hours and hours of World War I footage that most people said was unusable and remastered it, colorized it, dubbed over audio where there was no audio at all using replica weapons, voice actors assisted by lip-readers, and stitched it together. it basically looks like a modern war movie shot with modern film equipment, but using 100 year-old footage on decaying archived film. it's totally nuts. I just found that it's on HBO and I plan to watch it again.

I tried watching it.  I found it very strange and eventually fell asleep.  It reminded me of the re-imagined Metropolis which I also struggled to watch.  I may give it another shot though.

Watched this a ways back and agree the production can appear a little odd at times. The stories on the other hand, my god. I cannot even begin to imagine what horror those men experienced. The accounts of german and english soldiers helping each others wounded had me in tears. A world war fought with the blood of young men in the name of countries all being run by members of the same family.

the amazing thing about that movie was that it humanized the whole thing so much. usually, when I see images from WWI, it seems like a dream, something that happened in another world with no connection to our own. when you see how it is portrayed in that movie, you feel like it just happened, and the men in those trenches could be your brother, your dad, your best friend, or you. It really did a number on me. that war was horrible in its own way and it does not surprise me that soldiers from opposing countries wanted to say "eff this, we're going to play some football with those Germans because this sucks."

on that note, the recent biopic about JRR Tolkien with Nicholas Holt did a pretty good job of showing how deep the mental and emotional scar from combat can dig in.

Started binging Arrested Development a couple weeks ago. Outrageous fun! Just starting the more recent stuff that Netflix created.

It's a great show, especially Tobias.  Post back what you think about the Netflix stuff.  I'm curious.

A.D. grew on me after a bit. The mom was basically my mother's doppelganger who also lived in Newport. That show is a pretty accurate depiction of life behind the orange curtain.

There's money in the banana stand!!

Wow!  That was necessary to watch and also very hard to watch.  I lost it when the old guy was talking with his voice breaking down about having to shoot one of his friends missing a leg, and arm, and with his eye hanging out of the socket.  The images are jarring.  The compartmentalization was real and necessary to survive.  It was really interesting to hear how the Saxon Germans and English identified with each other, and they both hated the Prussians, and the Saxon POWs would give the fresh English troops moving to the frontline encouragement to give the Prussians hell.  I'm going to have to read up more on that.

A few things I’ve been watching:

Black Sails (Hulu): have you ever wanted to watch a high budget pirate porno, with a decent plot, without your significant other questioning your pornhub.com spending? Honestly, plot is a bit convoluted, but the scenery makes up for it. Worth checking out.

Lonesome Dove: another dvd kept around. Gets my vote for best western of all time. Absolutely worth buying/renting. 5/5. Also, the book is even better! I’ll start an argument by saying this is Cormac McCarthy without being depressing as shit.

Walk Hard: the Dewey Cox Story (Netflix); I’m usually a sucker for a dumb comedy, but this was wholly forgettable. Watch Step Brothers, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Step Brothers, I love You Man, WeddingCrashers, Talladega Nights, Or any 2010ish comedy instead. And yes I said Step Brothers twice. Just watch it.

Hamilton (Disney+): a musical about the guy who laid the foundation for the Federal Reserve? Doesn’t sound that exciting, but I actualIy enjoyed the show. It was definitely... unique. Everyone was super talented, other than Hamilton who I would say was just ok, but if you write the show I suppose you can pick your part. Worth watching; I’ll probably try to see it live next time it comes to Austin.

More detail than I expected.  Very interesting!

Yeah, spent a lot of time in Germany and the main thing I learned is that it is far from a homogenous country. Nobody is *really* German unless you are outside of the country. Inside it is all about your region. I remember driving from Munich to Tübingen with someone who was actually Schwabish. When I told her my family came from the area around Künzeslau in the state of Baden-Württemberg suddenly she was my best friend. Going on and on about this and that, didn't have the heart to explain that we left ~150 years prior so my broken German was about as much connection as we had left. Also, as a topping on the day, some marketing manager cried. Yeah, we finished that day up with plenty of beer in Munich.

To some degree it would be like assuming that Texans are all the same. Tell someone from Austin that they are like Houston, or someone from Dallas that they might know your buddy from the valley and you'll start a fight real fast.

I just realized, if it seems a bit slow, power through to 25 minutes in.

Fun fact: the cannon fire you hear in the movie is recordings of Peter Jackson's personal collection of cannons. Are you surprised that Jackson owns cannons? I'm not.

Yes, totally.  When I re-watched it, I realized what put me to sleep was the sequence talking about the 13-17 year olds lying about their age, and the recruiters telling them to walk back in when they're a year older, etc.

Nice to be watching NBA games again - honestly with the pumped in fan noise you really don't even think about there being no fans. Rockets are off to a great start taking out Dallas and Milwaukee in succession in the seeding games. Can't wait for things to heat up in the playoffs. Need to figure out my streaming plan by Aug 24 as I've officially cancelled my U-Verse. Trialed YouTube TV and it was perfect for me but the wife and kid didn't care for the interface. I think that's going to be the case though with any streaming platform, even when coupled with something like Roku.

Been watching a lot of baseball. I don't like the cardboard fans. The noise doesn't bother me much. I can't help but wonder who has the job of controlling the fan noise. And how do you get that job. Is it the organist? The TV production staff? I would think it's from the stadium staff for the home team. I have so many questions.

Cant find the article now but somebody bought like a whole section of those virtual fan cardboard cutout things. You could have some fun with that.

Okay...question. Are they making the BS fan noises for the athletes?  Like, at the stadium over the speakers?  For motivation?

Or is the noise just on the broadcast for audience comfort? Like for Big Bang Theory fans? Or dummies that like their letterbox movies choped to fit their 16:9 screens?

In either case society sucks. Burn it all down.

supposedly some of the crowd sounds they are playing at English football games are taken from Fifa video game sound tracks. some genius sound editor is syncing the chants, cheers, boos, and songs with the pace of the game. weird, but kinda cool.

on the topic of gritty Euro crime shows, Babylon Berlin was excellent, but very weird. all in German with English subtitles, so you really have to follow along.

Just finished season 3 of Dark. I want to find the versions with the original audio, and English subtitles. That always works better for me. Loved the entire series.

I had to take a break.  I was having a hard time keeping track of who is who and when is when.  I tried to pull up a character map but it had spoiler alerts in it.   I had no problems with the first 2 seasons, but from talking with other fans about it, we have all struggled with the 3rd season.  One co-worker decided to go back and re-watch the whole series.  It may be an issue related to how long it's been since I watched season 2.

How did you watch it?  I can't stand dubbed shows so I always watch foreign shows in the original language with English subtitles.
