Proposal for trails from Austin to San Antonio

Recommended Posts

This would be epic if ever completed.  San Antonio already has an amazing network of paved trails.

HOWARD W. PEAK GREENWAY TRAILS SYSTEM

Quote

The Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail System (Greenway) is a growing network of approximately 80 miles of developed multi-use and accessible trails open from sunrise to sunset. The Greenway trails wind through natural landscapes along many of San Antonio’s waterways including:

  • Salado Creek
  • Leon Creek
  • Medina River
  • Westside Creeks (Apache, Alazan, Martinez, San Pedro, and Zarzamora)
  • Tributary Creeks (Such as Huesta Creek and Culebra Creek)

I lived in San Antonio and was just getting into mountain biking when they officially opened the trails along Salado and Leon Creeks. The paved paths around the city are great, and there's singletrack all over the place near those creeks. It might not be difficult to link together a massive route that circumnavigates the city with those. Pedaling TO San Antonio from Austin could turn into a multi-day bikepacking tour.

It's been done as a bikepacking trip trying to use as much natural surface trail as possible.

The 10' wide trails in both cities are pretty dangerous unless they are almost deserted.

True.  Before the first paved paths were built in Austin, I thought the 10' width was huge, when they need to be separated as you noted, or twice that width at least.

I rode a paved rail trail in Atlanta near the old Sears headquarters.  It was thronged on a weekend day with every kind of user -- bikes, strollers, dog walkers, families, runners, roller bladers.  It had adequate width and could accommodate all of those users easily.
