RV Camping at Trail Heads

So we did it.  We watched countless RV videos over the last 5 years and @Barry found the perfect Toy Hauler.

This past weekend was the inaugural trip to Blowing Springs AK.

I am not sure which was more enchanting, sleeping next to a babbling creek or riding to the trailhead from the RV.

I'm super interested in finding other RV sites that are biking distance to trail heads.

I am currently researching a Muse OK, Hot Springs AK trip.

Anyone willing to share their fav RV Biking combos?

State parks that have trail systems are great. There are several that we have stayed in. So are Army Corp places. Ya know, like Dana Peak. 😁

Maverick RV in Lajitas is a good place. Feb 22-26 would be a great time to go.

We enjoyed camping at Blowing Springs. It was cool watching other bikers ride by right behind our site.

Congratulations on the new RV. No more having your tent blown away!

Not in Hot Springs, but I've stayed at one on the east side of Mt Ida. there's a state park at Denby Point right on the lake that you are an easy ride to the western edge of the LOViT trail.

Also a little south of Hot Springs on Lake DeGray you can camp right by the Iron Mountain trailhead I think. Never stayed at that one.

I've also done a few days in Palo Duro Canyon.  But thats an easy one that you have already prolly considered.  I stayed in a house during my time in Moab, but there seems to be options there too.

Andrew Harbert has spent 2 total months or more traveling around CO in their RV trailer and riding.  He's bound to be a good resource for ideas.

Congrats on the new rv!!   Some of us are heading to Lajitas this Feb....

Perdenales state park has plenty of trails in the park and nearby.  Plus there are a lot of great restaurants in the area.  State parks usually can't fit large rvs but I don't think that's a problem for yours.  And there is no septic hookup so you gotta dump on the way out.

There are a few rv parks in moab.  A local told me that oct is the best time to visit.  I'd like to try that next year.

I'd also like to do a 2 week trip to Colorado this summer and gonna start looking into some rv parks.

Can we see some pics? You might say I'm RV curious, but not quite ready to commit to a new lifestyle.

Ours is an Outback 240urs toy hauler with a side load garage up front. We also had to ditch our Grand Cherokee and go for a Durango to pull it.

I hope these pics show up.

We have a very unique RV called a TrailManor. It isn't a pop-up. TrailManor owners don't really know what to call it since they are so unique.

"Collapsible," or better, "Transformers." They only weigh 3,000 pounds so most SUVs can tow them. It has a folding hitch so they can fit in a garage.

We got it so we can store it at home behind our fence to comply with the HOA's "no RV storage" rules.

We haven't ever boondocked with our old A-frame pop-up or our new one. But we plan to do so in Moab at some point. We were intrigued by the

people camping on BLM land, for free, as we drove to the Klonzo trailhead there. We didn't take the RV on that trip.

Here's a picture of our lonely car in the parking lot. It was 100 degrees when we were there in June last year.

Not far from Mt. Ida is the Hwy 27 Fishing Village that sits directly across the street from the midpoint of the Womble Trail. You can do out-and-backs in either direction from your RV spot, or the folks there will shuttle you to / from either end. It's incredibly remote and scenic, but there is a small town to the north where you can go in for some grub, etc. One night we went up there and were treated to a local bluegrass gathering. Believe the name of that town is Story. Mt. Ida isn't too far either going south. Best bet though is to just pack what you need and enjoy the surroundings. They have cabins and tent spots in addition to the RV spots, and it's never been overly crowded from my experiences. Everything around there is "dry" - so pack plenty of libations to cover the duration of your stay. If you need more riding than the Womble offers, the trails in and around Hot Springs (including LOVit) are less than an hour away.

Photos didn't show up for me, but your setup sounds awesome. Storage would be one of my biggest hurdles. In the backyard, shorter than the fence would be my best option too.

But I just went to their website to check it out.  Pretty cool trailers!  Crazy how the difference between the small one and the biggest one is only 500-600lbs.

There is an almost cult like following of them because they are so scarce. They are now made by a Hutterite colony (like the Amish and Mennonites,)  in South Dakota. In an article the boss of them said their "goal was to work up to building 20 per month!" 😄 They are limited by the amount of help they have. Everyone in the factory has to be a member of the colony.

I was watching a show on HGTV or something about the RV industry and almost all of them are built in like a 100 mi radius of each other.  They were interviewing a guy who they said was Amish I thought, could have been Hutterite.  The hilarious part was he said it was ok for him to use the power tools at work to build hundreds of them but he had never driven or been in an RV except in the factory since he couldn't operate or travel in a motor vehicle.  😕

Ours is an Outback 240urs toy hauler with a side load garage up front. We also had to ditch our Grand Cherokee and go for a Durango to pull it.

Awesome camper.

I sold my Little Guy teardrop July 2021 after 4.5 years of heavy use. Loved that thing, but we simply outgrew it.

After nearly 18 months without a camper, we decided we can't take it any more and we just started shopping.
