Not a mountain bike but it is vintage and gets ridden occasionally. Early 80s Laguna frame and fork was saved from Yellow Bike a few years ago for a song.

Those look like pit bull brakes! I felt like a boss when I got my pit bulls on my Bmx bike as a kid. Mine were white.

I bet a Girvin Flex stem never needed to be rebuilt.

I remember riding a sweet Proflex with a Girvin at City Park marveling at all that suspension.

I remember the revelation when I first rode the Proflex.  Then another revelation when I swapped out the Flex Stem for a regular suspension fork on my Proflex 856.   Then huge revelation when riding the zippy and fun Titus Racer X!

Even huger revelation riding a 29er for the first time at a demo.  Then additional revelation when we realized that the early iteration Gary Fisher 29er was a clunky tank, and got better 29ers.  Also, disc brakes.  Mind blown.

It seems people are getting injured less these days with advances in mtn bike frame geometry, but I could be wrong.

That said, I'm sorry I ever let go of my fist mtn bike, a red steel Specialized Rock Hopper, in the (mid?) 1990s.

My first real MTB was a 1991 (could have been a 90) Univega Alpina low end model.   (this one is not mine, go visit this cool blogspot: http://bicyclephotodiary.blogspot.com/2012/02/)

I rode that bike on the BCGB, Emma Long, and some unmentionables for years while I finished school, then gave it to my brother when I upgraded to  Kestrel CS-X with Mag21.  That bike was tough and fun to ride.  I loved the Deore indexed shifters.  So simple and light!   I bought it from a bike shop on 24th.

I did more stuff on that bike than I do on my current FS.  I lost a lot of skills and nerve during my years in the Dallas area.

@June Bugnot long ago I picked up a 1994 Green Rockhopper (for $125) from someone that had bought it new, he'd rode it maybe a handful of times, and hung it in the garage.  The bike was 100% stock including original clean chain grease and the cracked dry tires.   I sold it to a co-worker for him to ride around the neighborhood.

I just remembered, for some reason, I upgraded the front hub to a Ringle Hubba Bubba.  I rode with toe clips and I took the BB apart (loose balls with no cage and extra balls) after every BC wet crossing.  I guess I've had that Park crank extractor tool for close to 30 years now.

All built and cabled, waiting on some 16mm nipples to show up so I can get the wheels strung. Big thanks to Wes Williams for tiggin' the derailleur hanger on and The Peddler Hyde Park for cutting the spokes to size.
