I'm not sure if they are still doing it, but Garmin used to have a replacement cost policy.  I think I got a new 705  3-times for $107 shipped.  Yes, it sucked that it failed so often but back then there weren't many alternatives.  It may be worth looking into this for your 1030, getting a new one, then selling it new-in-the-box even if you don't want to mess with a Garmin anymore.

Yep, I can send the 1030 into Garmin to get it repaired for $140. I'll probably do that and either keep it as a backup or sell it.

What are you looking for in a Garmin? I have an old Garmin 500 that I'd trade for a 6-pack if you don't need bluetooth or other fancy features.

Thanks for the offer. I went ahead and ordered the Karoo, it looks like an upgrade from my garmin 1030.

  3. I've built my last few bikes mostly because I like to cut the fork tube to my desired height. Always seemed like you can spend less money if you can find a good deal on a complete bike.

Regarding 11 speed vs 12 speed, I went from an XX1 11 speed setup to a X01 12 speed setup about 7 months ago. I've had no problem keeping the 12 speed dialed in and tuned. But I will say that the 11 speed shifted SO MUCH nicer (smoother with much less effort) than the 12 speed. I don't know if it's a XX1 vs X01 thing or 11 vs 12. If anyone has any info on that, let me know.

  4. I actually might be willing to spend the money to drop the weight, but the showstopper for me, as others have mentioned, is that I'm just as likely to give away my spare tube than use it myself, and ain't no way I'm giving away a $35 tube, or trying to explain to someone that it's a $35 tube.

Ive driven home a few times forgetting to end my Strava session and got a few KOM’s in my car. Spent 5 minutes trying to figure out how to remove those segments and didn’t seem possible so I just let it be.

Usually your ride will get flagged pretty quickly when that happens, since whoever you beat on the KOM will get an email notification that they've been beat.

  6. Last weekend I did a greenbelt ride that involved a stop at Zilker Park to fill my bottle (and see if there was anything worth seeing at Barton Springs Pool). While I was checking out the scenery, a guy came up to me and said that someone told him there was a place close by to rent a mountain bike. My first thought was BSS, but he was under the impression that the other person meant that it was somewhere in or much closer to the park. Is there somewhere else that I don't know about? Do they rent bikes at the place where they rent out canoes?

I cant tell if thats a serious question or not. it reads almost like you made some type of weird grade-school-math-book riddle out of it or something. lol. "if a train is going 75mph headed north on train tracks 13 miles long, how long does it take for XXXXXX"

and when your aluminums frames snapped, did the failure all in itself cause you to loose control of your bike and crash like you would if your handlebars snapped?

Apologies that the way I asked that question was confusing to you. In other words, in my personal experience, I've had 2 aluminum failures and zero carbon failures. This makes me think, in general, that carbon is more reliable than aluminum. Are there studies or data out there that say that carbon is more likely to fail than aluminum? Are failure rates between carbon and aluminum different for handlebars?

  8. I've broken 2 different aluminum frames, which snapped pretty cleanly and suddenly. Have never broken a carbon frame, even though I ride alot harder now on my carbon frames than I did on those aluminum frames. That makes me feel more comfortable with carbon handlebars than aluminum. Is there something wrong with that conclusion?
