  1. Finally got out and checked out all of these changes everybody's been talking about. I really need to get over to Candyland more often - love that stuff over there. Wish there was a way to tie Caddyshack in more easily - that's a really fun little out-and-back. Only downside today was coming across a guy riding Picnic on an eBike and dealing with the rocks that somebody keeps piling up at the bottom Dave's Glitch. For me the Glitch is all about the line. There's very little margin for error, but if you get the line right, it rides like any other g-out. Of course the line is different depending on which direction you're going. Wish folks would quit messing with it.

There is a route over to bcrt so you dont HAVE to do an out n back. PM for details if interested .

I wonder who is doing the rock piles on Glitch. Rider or runner.

  2. Great conditions today.  Peddler's continues to get funner.  Thanks HB.  Not sure I rode the newly cut stuff the exact way it was planned, but helped tamp it down anyway.  Also saw the new and improved (?) Gnargasm.  Lost maybe 30% of the pucker factor, but still fun.  Nice to meet one of you out there today too.  Merry Christmas ladies.
Dont worry. A new pucker factor is coming to that exact spot. This recent doing was a setup for it

  3. 1020382606_NewendtoPeddlersPassmissedpart.thumb.png.7de0da381df4b492fc5dcb1dee816fa2.png 1st yellow circle. If you miss it you will get to a log blocking the existing trail by the labyrinth, stop, turn around, and go back +/- 100 feet and look for the new stuff (now on your left).
There's a second crossing of this existing trail indicated by the second yellow circle, just go straight over the existing trail.
There's a third crossing of the existing trail indicated by the third yellow circle, Turn left onto the existing trail, ride for about 75 feet then turn left and it will lead you back to the original end of Peddlers Pass
Is this a bike trail or a puzzle?

  5. Roller straight down the bowl to the right (looking up)? I've been eyeing that line for a while.

That is Phase 2. Maybe meet me out there one day and show me your ideas. I have an idea for same spot but open to suggestions. But the new scary aspect will be an up and over ...over the small boulder on top if the huge bolder that will shoot you straight into the wood feature .

  6. https://www.texasobserver.org/is-texas-overcrowded-underfunded-state-parks-system-being-loved-to-death/ worth a read. have you been to a Texas State Park recently? I camped and hiked at Inks Lake last weekend. it was not very crowded and everything was in good shape.

"the counties of Bexar, Hays and Travis and their seats — San Antonio, San Marcos and Austin, respectively — have created more public land in the last 20 years than either the state or federal governments. In fact, Texas leads the nation in local ballot initiatives to invest money in parks and other green space."

This sounds good. But Texas would have to also rank somewhere near the bottom if not THE bottom of amount of open land space available to the public in relation to land mass. Other states have problems on how to manage so much BLM land. Everything here seems to be gobbled up by private ranches, corporate entities , municipalities, or preserve land. Just my un informed rant. Hopefully this is a move in the right direction for more publicly available land.

  7. Why is "Quarter Notch" called "Quarter Notch"?

Well you see it's a long historied tale as old as the ages themselves. It involves haters and people who just dont give a f**k. Legend has it that it was named Quater Notch out of spite for the hate received whilst under construction from one particular hater. Thos hater was also a self proclaimed bad ass. And whenever one would say WOW Deception is hard and techy...said hater would chime in with "it's only a 1/4 notch more effort than Walnut".

So when the overlords in power put down the hammer and said no trail in their lands would be named Deception we had to come up with something else. It had to be split in 2 segments since one half is clearly harder than the other. Now Deception was an unbeatable name. So what does one who does not give a f**k do when forced to take away an awesome name? You name it something ridiculous stupid and rooted in spite. Therefore the easier part of Deception was henceforth to be known as QUARTER NOTCH

  8. Checked this out today. Mixed emotions. Kinda liked it scary, but oh well. Probably should happen to decrease chance of catastrophic injuries.
Dont worry a new scary aspect is coming. Just not dumb dangerous like it was.

  9. What's with the rock placements on Dave's Glitch? Looks like somebody came through and placed a very large rock right in front of the root at the bottom of the g-out, which is directly in the line that I ride through there when heading E-W on Rim. I can't imagine that was helping anybody. I rode over it but it definitely slowed my momentum getting up the other side. Aside from that, it was a glorious day on the trails, especially after finally getting bike #1 back from the shop with a free Reverb replacement.
Dummy doing dumb things. Move it out of there if you get a sec.

  10. don't you already have this approval?
I heard I did. But I really need to get something from him in hard form that I can show the county. They will get called for sure and they may show up since it comes so close to the bcrt. I dont want any issues.

  11. I’m actually considering just building a large 6 by 8 foot plank out of 2x10’s and laying it across. I think that’ll keep water moving underneath it, and not disrupt the feature of the trail too much.

It will work for a bit. But once the drainage pushes dirt and debris and clogs under then water will likely stop before it and then flow over it causing a wet wood feature. Plus over time the wood will warp and sag . Then it will be a mud pit with slippery wood. I'm not gonna say dont do it. Just I've seen this done before. If you have a bunch of wood. The Gnargasm wood feature needs a new top.

ALSO I have a small reroute planned in there that may effect things. I will definitely need help to make this project work once it is approved. Mostly the project is to not have the Cru Jones drop terminate into the bcrt, but it will effect the last 50 to 100 yds of trail . The only thing I'm waiting on is approval from CP Parks to take a machine over there since that spot is on their property.

  12. I looked at this hole quite a bit once.  I think people have added rocks but they've already been covered with mud.  It seems like building some kind of silt filter up "stream" and cutting a drainage ditch down "stream" should help things out.   Just cutting a little channel downstream drains it.  Riding through it makes ruts again that block the water from flowing.   The other option is to armor it with flat rocks, and keeping the downstream side very clear.  Think of something like the armored crossings at Walnut Creek.  It's no big deal riding through the armored puddles when it's very wet.  It's either that or building a small bridge.

People threw a few random big rocks in there. It needs to be packed with a TON of SMALL rocks. The small rocks lock together. Big rocks unless real big and submerged and locked in with keystone rocks will work for a bit until they have erosion and work loose. That entire area is a drainage ditch. It just needs some upkeep to knock build up out. The Walnut crossing is a great example of what could be done though.

  13. I'm heading out now for a ride but probably won't make it as far east as Gnargasm. I suggest avoiding Mulligan until we can somehow fill in that massive mud hole. It wasn't anywhere near dried out a couple of days ago; so I'm really not sure what it's going to take short of filling it in with rocks. Deception, Rim, Picnic, and Snail have all been primo!
That area has TONS of 1 to 3 inch rocks. Just need to take buckets and load it in real heavy. I got a newborn so getting out is pretty tough. If someone wants to head this up and get some people together I can at least bring supplies

  14. I came home today all anxious to ride. Grabbed my junk , grabbed my bike and the bars didn’t budge. Frozen. With all the water lately and several washes apparently my lower bearing of the headset rusted or corroded just enough to seize up.
I pulled it all apart and in the picture is the lower bearing. A Cane Creek ZS44.
The top bearing is smooth like jazzy butter on a baby’s ass.
The bottom bearing feels like sand as I move it.
Rough and nothing like the top. Looking at the edges of the blue seal it does look wet and rusty in there.

Do I replace that? Is it a serviceable part? I assume I can replace just that lower bearing and not the whole headset.

  15. Just finished riding. Deception, Rim, and Snail are all in great shape. Picnic was OK with a few slick spots. Mulligan was a shit show - not worth riding until it dries out.
Ah. Yea. Should have mentioned Mully. What really needs to happen is take some buckets and wheelbarrows in there. Tons of 3 inch rock pieces to toss in the mud and make a nice base.

  16. I checked the trails at lunch time. There are some very slick spots and standing water in places along all the trails. I'd wait until at least tomorrow to ride.

Stop it! It's virtually the same as 2 days ago. Once the sun and wind has a bit of time today it will be the same. Those few bad low spots are gonna be that way for awhile.

  17. I'll be going out later and will post an update here as well as on the Brushy Creek Ride Call thread. Assuming the trails are OK, you're welcome to join us for the Fri morning ride.

I’m going to be MIA starting tomorrow morning until next Wednesday. Throet, Redrider, or whoever would you guys be able to provide trail reports so I can keep the feed current? Definitely would be appreciated and I can get you a beer sometime.

Trails are fine ...not great. Same mushy spots as few days ago. Few more slick spots but I was on trail this am before the sun got chance to dry stuff
