Back when we had ours done, there had been some minor hail event in the area, and we learned that a few neighbors had called their insurance companies and were getting new roofs. We called, not expecting much - fellow came over, took one look and said 'yup, new roof for you'. So def worth the call!

Yep. Most people have what would be considered damage and live for years without knowing or having any roof problems. It takes massive hail to do the type of damage that would require an immediate replacement. A good majority of the damaged roofs can go years without needing to be replaced unless they are old or a poor quality of shingle.

we had three roofers give us estimates a few months ago and we didn't go for it. all of them said that the roof did not appear to have sufficient damage that they thought insurance would help out, but they said it would not hurt to ask. one of the three said they don't work with insurance anyways, but the other two said they would gladly take insurance money if that was part of the deal. I'll look into it and hopefully that will help. yay, new roof coming!

I always advise at least giving it a shot with insurance before committing to paying out of pocket. You would be surprised to what I've seen bought, all depends on what insurance company you have and how the field adjuster is feeling that day. You don't need a roofer present for the adjuster meeting and it typically will not affect your policy if you file a claim and it is denied. Again, I can pull a hail report for you if you would like. Its free and I promise I'm not trying to sell you a roof, I'm booked months out right now. It will tell you what wind/hail events you have had at your address for the last 10 years

BTW, always worth getting your insurance company out to take a look at your roof - they may think you have hail damage which is covered, even if you don't.

^^^This. A good majority of homes in Austin have what could be considered hail damage and most homeowners have no idea until someone gets up there and looks. Depending on where in south Austin chances are you have damage. Feel free to pm me your address and I can run a hail report to your address and give you an idea. Even if you don't have it now, you might be able to squeeze some more time out of it until you can get it bought. I have a list of 300 customers waiting for hail to hit, no reason paying out of pocket if you can help it.

Only in Texas does one have "a regular roofer"!  I also have a guy.  They do travel.  I remember one year I wanted him to check on something for me but they were out in Alabama/Georgia to fix roofs after some bad storms they had.

I have a few customers that I have replaced their roofs twice in 18 months or less. Typically I would have told them to wait but they were missing vents, flashings, etc.

I don't need ambulance chaser roofers.

They are already in town from the storm that came through town last month and I can assure you more are on the way. I have several customers that started receiving calls immediately after the storm from all centers all over North America. Couple words of advise:

Go with someone you know and trust

Don’t sign anything even if they tell you it’s required for them to do an inspection. Several companies will try and get you to sign a contingency form disguised as a release. This will never hold up in court but could be a pain to fight.

Go local and check for proof they actually are local. There are companies that set up temporary offices to seem local and will skip town once they hit their quota.

  6. We had literally just finished installing a new roof when the hail hit. Thankfully it was in Georgetown and was on the far edge of the storm. If you are in an area that got hit hard, prepare for every roofing company in the country to come knocking on your door. Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions.

Anyone know which stores sell Specialized MTB tires in the north Austin area?  I've really liked my Specialized Eliminator Black Diamond 29*2.6 up front and wanted to get another one.  Or can someone suggest a similar Maxxis option?  Looking for strong sidewalls and lots of side knobbys.

    Thanks!

The 183 store still had a small selection of leftover Specialized tires when I was there a couple weeks ago. I would call and ask what they have available.

When I had to have to travel up to Dallas for work, I always had my MTB with me. Would stop at Cameron Park on the way up there and then hit what I could after all the boring meetings once in Dallas. While all my coworkers were planning out where they were heading for drinks and dinner every night, I was long gone, out finding new trails. It was also a great way to get out of attending annoying business dinners with people I would rather not be socializing with.  Yet another reason to have a MTB! 🙂

Waco was on the list of possible stops as well yesterday. However, the wife booked us an air bnb for a getaway weekend a mile from cameron park. She was not happy when i loaded the bike up this afternoon.

  9. Took the mtb with me on a business trip up to Dallas and hit Northshore for the first time since the 90's. Got lost on the west side because I was watching the Garmin instead of going by memory. Not that I wouldn't have got even more lost without the Garmin, it provides a great excuse though. It was great seeing what that trail has evolved into.

A mechanic’s pick to slide between the grip and bar, and a spray bottle of isopropyl makes getting silicon grips off super easy. I slide the pick in four different position around the bar while giving a small spritz of isopropyl. After a few firm twists the isopropyl will make its way down the entire grip and it will easily slide off.

I have tried this and the compressed air trick and finally said screw it and broke out the razor. Maybe it's my handle bars, I'm not sure. I have had success removing them off my daughter's bike but it is a total pain on my blur. I usually replace them every few months anyway so its not that big of a deal.

  11. I upgraded to the new Sram AXS with the 10-52 a couple months ago and like it. I agree that it is overkill for most of what we ride around here but I was thankful to be able to noodle up some of the hills when I did the Rattler last month. I also like it on the super steep technical climbs. It is not for everyone, but it does have some value in certain situations.

Presumably they're going to brand as Trek and only carry Trek, yes? I can't see this area supporting 4 of those stores though. But it's a damn fine time for someone to open a shop dedicated to Santa Cruz and Specialized (and EVIL while you're at it).

Noticed this a couple weeks ago while searching for a BMX for my nephew. Not sure if they previously sold Santa Cruz in other locations outside of Austin and San Antonio but found it interesting.

  13. Above posters are correct about the roof ventilation. Can make a big difference if done correctly and you have the proper amount of air coming into the attic space. I would recommend ridge vent over any motorized form of ventilation if your roof allows it. Much more surface area with ridge vent and it is a passive system so no replacing motors every few years. Get the roof inspected before you do anything, depending on where you live you could have roof damage that could get replaced by your insurance company. It is much cheaper to add ventilation during a new roof install than to add to an existing roof. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions, I own a roofing company and we do lots ventilation install and upgrades.

  14. It is time consuming but not difficult, took me about 3.5 hours. I installed an invisiframe kit on my blur and it turned out great with no bubbles. I used a mixture of water and baby soap in a spray bottle as instructed to wet the frame before installing each section. Clean the frame really well before, dial in your soap and water mix, use the supplied squeegees and you will be fine.

Zwift has FTP estimation, does it not? They also have training plans but maybe not as good as trainer road, maybe better, I can't say. I'd read some not so great things about them but Zwift is always adapting and improving so they might be better now.

Is there a virtual biking app that includes riding trails? Or real video of singletrack?

Yes there are a couple different FTP tests you can take in Zwift. I like the training plans on Trainerroad more than Zwift, I do know that Zwift has updated their plans and they look to be more fine tuned than when I was following them. IMO it just depends on what your goals are, I think you could do fine using either company. Just pick one and stick with it. Trainerroad did just add a feature allowing you to do their workouts outdoors, I do them inside and watch race videos on youtube.

  16. Anyone here run Xt brakes with Sram shifters? I want to switch from the Level TLM that came with my bike and install a pair of Xt brakes that I have laying around. Anyone have any experience with any of the adapters on the market? I'm running XO1 12sp and would prefer to still have the ability to adjust the shifter angles.

  17. Nice setup, definitely add a fan or 2 when possible.  Getting a smart trainer was a game changer for me. I got back on the bike about a year ago after a long hiatus. I started on Zwift and have since switched over to Trainerroad as I tend to respond better to a more structured regimen, the Trainerroad podcast and forum is an awesome source of info. I love how easy it is to jump on the trainer and bust out a workout and be done. It will never replace the joy of being outside but with a busy life it has allowed me to fine tune my fitness to a level that I thought to be impossible. I spend most of my weekly ride time (8-10hrs.) on the trainer watching videos of people riding outside.
