Nando, I am skipping town to go to Chicago and beat the heat. If you want to borrow my kona unit SS to get a feel for it, let me know, I can bring it to the R&I. I have ridden it on some of the WC trails as a skin(ier) tired broke, it now has some slightly fatter tires on it, but still street tires. Good solid frame that can be built up to a trail hardtail pretty fast.
Thank you. Din't know those could be built geared. That one is a 29er, right?

What size? How tall are you approx?
5’8”, so a medium, I guess

Thinking of a new bike:
- Fully rigid.
- 27.5 plus or fat
- 2.6 to 3” tires
- 1x whatever (geared, don’t care about exact number)
- disc brakes
To use mostly as urban bike, but also use as backup on the trail. Low budget. Discuss.

Also, Nando, make sure that he budgets a few hundred for component upgrades. Trust me, there will be things that will need to be replaced soon. You have a big enough network here that if he needs parts we can probably help out on some of them, but he needs to know that $600 is just to get into the show and the concession stand can get expensive 😉
Yes, he’s been advised. That bike could use a sit dropper. With 1x shortly after that. Funds should not be an issue, but he is getting used to the idea of how much these things cost. Baby brother steps.

So, how long do you estimate before you can get him to ATX on a bike and punish him on the local trails with a little sibling rivalry and home court advantage?
You must mean “how long before you go ride the California mountains?”

He's definitely going for a spin or two first. I mean, these are the same people he works with and will be riding with. I emphasized it has to fit properly and how to figure that out, or take it to the LBS.
Thanks guys.

So, my brother is getting the MTB bug, has no clue where to begin (or even if his knee will tolerate it). He's out in Victorville, CA, and works with a group of locals that ride. One of the locals is selling his 2015 Scott Spark 920 for $600. I think he should take it.
What do you think?

I believe that’s a stem

You should seriously consider approaching some of these bike makers and offer your “factory pilot“ services

Sounds like a trip to the northern lands some time soon... haven’t been toThumper in forever. Does it still suck as bad as it always did?

Hope some others chip in...

You can also to straight to Amazon's gift registry and contribute toward the grill's purchase using your Amazon account.

Excellent (probably best way for most)

Yo, a guy that used to go by Notsosilent Bob (Bob Nussbaum) is getting married. He has a gift list on Amazon. Not many things have been purchased, but Tony mentioned he knows Bob would love a Weber grill ($179). If we all pitch in a little bit it'll be a great gift for a guy that has been keeping the R&I tradition many years after moving away. That, and it's his wedding. You can paypal your donation to Tony: tony at teamIPA dot bike

I love it, and at that price, a good deal. But, alas, that’s about twice my budget.
