I've seen guys on long skateboards with rubber tipped SUP type "paddles" (look like big Q-tips) and they're actually using them to push themselves, that's on the paved path.  Were these actually paddles you saw and was it the guys on the one-wheels?  I've seen 3 one-wheels together at point-6 one day, then another one by himself the other day none with any kind of stick or paddle.  They seemed to be doing their own thing not messing with the trail, not going any faster or slower than other bike users.

I used to work with a guy that would ride his longboard to work using one of those things, the guy on the One Wheel just had a standard plastic SUP paddle. They just seemed to be making their way through the trails as best as they could. I just thought it was weird.

I just saw 3 scooters parked on a corner, blocking the ADA ramps at Breaker and Stonelake.  So they're up north now.  Saw a dude also riding it on the sidewalk in front of NXNW on 360 & Stonelake.  On Tuesday a guy was in point-6 at Walnut Creek on one of those one-wheel things.

There were two of them out there. We encountered them on log loop. They were both standing in the middle of the trail next to a little root step. One of them when had a SUP paddle for some reason.

  3. IMO you're all doing knee/leg warmers wrong. I have to put them on before my shorts in order to get them high enough to stay. I also had to add some silicone patches to the outside of the upper cuff, but that may be because I bought them big as I don't like tight clothing around my knees.

  4. I stopped going in 2012ish. The big issue I had was the 60% of the people there were not doing business. Most didn't even work in the industry, they just knew the folks at the local shop and came to hang out. I had to fight my way through crowds trying to get autographs, swag, or just free beer to get anything done. And by day two even most of the people working were too hung over to actually work.

That might be it. Where was that? My knowledge of Austin geography in 2003 is useless now. Liberty Hill? I think I recall driving for a while to get there.

Taylor IIRC. The Empire So Sick Man Jam out there was my first trip to Austin, in 2004  I think. They went under a while back, for various reasons. Skatepark of Austin was actually in town, near Cameron and 290, and went out of business too. Rising rent costs back around 2010.

I'd be down for a skills park under the highway. My first thoughts would be where SATN crosses under Mopac near DN, but VCT construction probably makes that less then ideal right now. And someone would probably run over the jumps with their big 4X4 after too long.

  6. Recently started the trip with a 6x12 enclosed trailer and had to double back because we disliked it so much. I'm trying to get the bikes out of the van so we can just sleep in there.

I agree though, the price is crazy and a small trailer may be a good compromise. Though I have found that I HATE towing.

  7. As long as it isn't a sketchy motel I don't think I'd worry about it. Maybe check with the manager to insure your bike isn't disturbed. You could also just lock it to something in the room and put up the "do not disturb" sign.

  8. I need a way to carry 4 bikes outside the car on an extended road trip. I don't want to ruin my bikes driving in foul weather or risk getting them stolen so I want an enclosed solution. The Black Box (and maybe the Hitch Hotel) is the only solution I can find, but am also considering custom, I just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with it.

I'm heading there in Jan for 2 days of riding.  Plan to do the 35 mile loop Barry did (I think it was Franklin Mountains) on day 1 and then find something else to ride on day 2.  Only question is if I ride the 29" HT or the 29" FS bike.  I'm leaning towards the HT with some 2.4 or 2.5 tires.

I'll take both bikes just in case.

    Any ideas\suggests are much appreciated.

I was glad to be on my fs trail bike. I rode the Mini Puzzler race route (on MTB project) and the was a lot of super chunky extended rock gardens and fast decents punctuated by rough wash out and arroyos. A HT would do it but you'd probably have less fun with more effort.

80% of the people I saw on the trails on at the trailhead had squishy bikes fwiw.

I'm planning to go back in early January to do the mountain loop too. We parked in Chuck Hendrick Park on the Northeast side of town and didn't worry about the car for a second. It was a nice neighborhood with tons of park goer traffic.

  10. Where's the love? I was just out there for a day last week and was blown away by the trails in Franklin Mountains State Park. Imagine Austin tech, with grippy rocks, less trees, and actual mountains.
