There are few enough entrances to these trails - especially Peddlers - what about putting up construction/hazard tape across each entrance with a laminated sign saying that the trail is currently closed due to wet conditions?  The assholes will still bypass it, but the clueless will at least learn that we aren't supposed to ride wet trails.

    Of course, it could set the standard that if you show up on a wet day and there's no tape, then it's fine to ride.

    I don't think anyone wants to see my sausage in a tutu in public.  What I do in the privacy of my own home, however...

    Chancho, when you are a man, sometimes you wear a tutu in your room.  Just for fun.

Seriously though - regardless of what the marketing videos show, the real front line for these bike sales is the LBS.  If someone goes to BSS looking at ebikes and talking about taking it out on the local trails, do you figure the salesperson tries to direct them to a non-ebike?  Does he even mention the local ban on motorized bikes on the trails? 

    I'd be interested to hear if there are store policies on such things.

    So the ads should show frail old men on ebikes dragging their oxygen tanks behind them instead of enticing younger?  At this rate we'll have hipsters wearing depends and riding ebikes at City Park.

  5. Great write up, Eric.  Sorry it was such a tough day, but if you can get through a day like that then doing a lap in cooler, drier conditions should be refreshing, right?  And mad props to someone who has the guts to fuel up on Taco Bell hot sauce! 

    Relative to earlier rides on this trail, I had a great day.  This was the first time I managed to come in under the 4.5hr cutoff and it actually gave me hope that I can finish at least 2 laps in Nov.

    I started out riding loosely with JRider and Reuben.  After JRider turned back Reuben and I tightened ranks and stuck together for full lap.  Reuben is young and energetic but wasn't as familiar with the trail as I am, so he kept my pace up and I showed him some lines through some of the nasty stuff (and showed him a few lines not to follow).  Carried a pretty good pace out to the dam and then stopped at Cedar Breaks trailhead for a snack.   I was feeling good up til about the halfway point between CB and Tejas - that's where I started re-evaluating (for the 3rd week in a row) my choice of diet.  It wasn't really a bonk, just a severe fatigue set in.  I kept suggesting that Reuben ride on ahead because he was feeling fine, but he's a good guy and claimed he wasn't in a hurry (probably worried about all the explaining if I was found dead on the trail).  Once we made it Tejas, I ate my last bar and we loaded up on water.  I'm finally starting to appreciate that once you hit Tejas, you're really mostly done.  Made it back to Russell and found the fast guys all hanging out in the shade waiting around to make sure everyone survived.  Pulled up and joined them for a well earned Topo Chico.

    We came in right around 4hrs overall (3:30 riding time).  I would like to say I considered going for a second lap, but honestly I don't think it even occurred to me.

    So, that's 1 week on keto that felt great, 1 week on keto that felt so bad it made me re-evaluate keto, and 1 week on a regular carb load that felt really great up until it didn't.  I think the next test is regular carb load but with snacks along the way instead of just a protein bar at CB and at Tejas (Reuben, those clif shot blocks made a world of difference, thanks!)

  6. Ordered the wrong size seat post clamp - spent 2 years with a beer can shim to make it work.

    After an especially bad day of shifting on my 3x front derailleur, decided to go 1x.  Removed the front derailleur but never got any further.  Now I have to manually shift to the granny gear.

    Haven't bought a new bike since 2005 - I'm on my fourth replacement frame and all the bits have been replaced at least twice, but technically I bought the bike in 2005.

I've been trying to follow a keto diet just as an experiment.  Last week's LGT ride was ideal - I only had 2 ThinkThin bars for the whole thing (lowest carb bars I've found without getting into those weird meat sticks) and I got back to the parking lot feeling like I had a lot more in me.  Fast forward to this week, and I had my daughter's birthday party the night before and might have eaten enough carbs to throw me out of keto.  My LGT ride this week was a completely different experience.  Right around Crockett with the downed trees I started to bonk and never really got back on track.  Ended up spending the rest of the day on the couch.

    For those of you with more keto experience, does this sound like a matter of messing myself up with too many carbs the day before or was it just a rough day on the bike?

    Mon - Fast brushy ride - 90 min - core work
    Tues - Fast Walnut R&I ride - 75 min
    Wed - Rest Day - core work
    Thurs - Slow brushy ride - 90 min
    Fri - Slow brushy ride - 60 min - core work
    Sat - Slow LGT loop - 4 hr
    Sun - Rest Day - core work

    As for crack and Mountain Dew - it has to be diet Mountain Dew so I can stay keto :-)

I've done it twice.  The first time I was intimidated by it and I did specific training and made sure to hit all the trails to know what I was up against.  The second time, I decided the weekend before and really just took it as a fun ride.  If you're not trying to go fast, then it's not too difficult and I think any serious rider can finish.  If you want to go fast, then it gets a lot tougher.

    To the point of people cutting the route short - on both of my experiences I saw the same thing, people that I KNEW I had left behind sitting there enjoying a beer at the end when I crossed the line.  Really, what's the big deal?  I do the ride for personal satisfaction and for a the T-shirt (yes, the T-shirt is actually a huge motivator for me).  It's not like it's a race with prize money or even much in the way of standings.  So let everyone have their enjoyment and sit there with your beer knowing you're better than them :)

  10. With discussion about Dragonslayer and Enchilada Buffet on the uptick, I thought I'd see what suggestions y'all have on training for these things.

    What do y'all do to get your body ready for 12-14 hrs of punishment - especially in the case of Dragonslayer where it will all be pretty brutal, rocky terrain?

    Right now my plan is to just ride lots and try to push my distance and time in the saddle as much as my schedule will allow.  I'm also trying to put in more time at LGT to get familiar with the trail so maybe I have an idea of where to push it and where to relax.

    I'm also curious about nutrition.  I've always just carried some bars or Clif Shots with me and not worried too much.  What are you doing to keep energy levels up throughout an extended effort?

    I agree with this - I don't intentionally go looking for stuff, but when I see that the Pay It Forward thread has a new post I go look at it.  Moving it to a different place will result in less activity and eventual disuse.

    I actually feel the same way about the sales items.  Look at how often people post to the For Sale forum and then cross post to Voodoo.  Nobody really looks at the sales forum.

    But then ... Forum Administration is much like trail building.  If I'm not going to offer to help set up (and I'm not), then I should be happy with the design that you come up with (and I will be).  If you choose to leave a few tree gates along the way, I'll happily live with them.

    Thanks for all your work setting this up and getting us moved over!
