  1. For those running the SR Zeron cranks, are you running boots, if so, what size fits? Google has failed me. 


    Boots on alloy cranks? Nah. They’re pretty stout feeling and my kid isn’t shredding gnar big enough to get remotely close to damaging these.

    Crank boots are reserved for maintaining that lustrous carbon finish.

  2. The Sunrace 11-40 is a good looking cassette. It seemed like a quality piece of kit when I installed it on my sons bike. The spacing between the gears seems nice and even instead of having a big jump when going up to the biggest cog. Pretty sick looking red carrier too.

  3. It wouldn’t have to be much. I’m pretty sure all i9 wheels are hand built. So maybe the fact that “a batch” was bad according to i9 means they had a builder who is likely not employed there any longer. The “s” level wheels use the same aluminum rims as their bling system wheels. So I’m pretty sure it was just builder error.

  4. The original wheel is Ibis S35 w/Ibis hubs.  I am currently running Industry 9 1/1 with Enduro S hoops.  The carbon hoops on my HT was Bontrager Line Pro.
    Going to FS has pretty much eliminated pinch flat issues I had with the HT, but I've been frustrated by how unreliable my rear wheel has been.  Perhaps they were both poorly built from the get go as Mattlikesbikes has suggested.    

    I have a set of i9 Enduro S wheels that are a year old. In the fall I popped two spokes and sent it in to i9. The service rep with i9 said that they actually were have a small issue on a batch of their steel spoked wheels with spoke windup during the builds. This would result in de-tensioning once the wheel was ridden. Apparently their de-tentioning process during the build wasn’t working. They took my wheel back and rebuilt it completely with all new spokes and nips. So far so good. If your i9’s were bought new I would contact them.

  5. I went with the zeron because I like external bearing BSA bb’s. The bike is 1x10 with a 11-40t cassette, so he’s got plenty of range and as I mentioned before, he’s not hitting gnar big enough to need a bashguard. But I did cobble together a chain guide to prevent any chain drops which wouldn’t have worked with a 2x setup.

  6. If anyone has any of the crappy stock 24x1.95 tires these bikes come with, let me know. I am the bike guy for our neighborhood and have a few kids in need of new rear tires (too many skid stops!).
     


    I actually have a set you are welcome to.

    For my 8yo’s 24” hotrock I ordered some special tan wall Vee Tire Flow Snaps from Commencal when they were selling their kids bikes with tan walls. I can’t find the tan walls anymore, but the tires are a good size and are grippy. I actually had to clip the outer blocks of the tread a little bit to get them to fit between the chain stays!

  7. FYI-yours truly is part time at Cycle Progression. Our current wait time is about two weeks right now.

    What kind of dropper post is it? As long as I have the right tools and parts at my disposal, I can do 50hr services and dropper service in my garage. Damper rebuilds are better done at the shop due to a larger amount of specialty tools needed. There is a good chance that you need the full 100 hour service done though. Wouldn’t know until it was all opened up.

    Check out 812 Suspension. They’re local and do great work according to friends.

  8. you probably need to buy him a new bike...

    He’s got a custom built 24” with a lowered Fox fork, discs and carbon bits. But I do like your suggestion.

    He was pedaling a bike around 3-4, but for some reason his personality is extremely risk adverse. He’ll do a 10mile ride with me as long as it doesn’t involve “tricky, scary stuff”

    Basically I’ve figured out he has to be in the right mood and he has to watch other people do something a bunch of times until he’s analyzed exactly how to do it. Then, when nobody is watching he’ll nail it like an expert the first try...and act like it was no big deal. :P

  9. Wait, are we talking about volume spacers or travel spacers. Two very different things in a fork!

    I made my own polyurethane travel spacers. No need for glue or anything, they snap in to place just like the store bought ones. I lowered a 26er Fox F100 down to about 60mm of travel this way.

    Now I'm sure you probably make your own volume spacers to make the fork more progressive. But with lighter weight riders you usually want to get a more linear spring rate I thought.

  11. It's in a church property right?  I remember doing a TMBRA XC race there and they didn't race on Sunday IIRC.

    Big Cedar and Boulder are on/share church property.

    Cedar Hill is a state park. Of all the trails in Dallas it actually has some...some elevation change. The trail is as described above, fine. If you’re in the area though, hit Big Cedar or head straight to the Northshore of Lake Grapevine. The Northshore trails were my favorite trails when I lived there (back in 08). Fun, with some techy bits (minor tech) and plenty of mileage. I also enjoyed Oak Cliff Nature Preserve, but it is fully “in da hood”. It’s about as close to feeling like Walnut as you can get up there.

  12. We Are One rims? I serious don’t understand how you did this with a tire tool. I’m with Antonio, needs more resin. Looks like weak pre-preg. If you broke a tire lever putting a tire on though, I’ve dinged AL rims using the wrong methods, but dang. Make sure the beads on the opposite end of the tire are down in the middle of the rim before fitting remaining 10 inches of bead if you can!
