Is anyone able to get up Chainless nowadays (W to E)?  It's almost unrecognizable in this video.  I sessioned all the harder lines on the east end of DD today and I couldn't even get close on that one.  The run up is just so eroded now.

Hardly anything in that video is recognizable, and it's been a year since my last ride there, so I bet it's even worse now.

Next task for your Berryman's experiment...ice pick!

Hmm yeah... I'm not that brave with $150 worth of new Maxxis'... maybe when they're shot.

You could try mixing it with RV antifreeze instead of water.  Antifreeze definitely evaporates more slowly.  It's pretty cheap too.

I'm definitely interested in how the Berryman works out long term.

I actually have some from my DIY brew days and thought about using it, but figured I'd see how water fairs first. If we start getting frequent or hard freezes though, I might shoot an ounce or so into each tire anyway.

  3. I decided to try the Berryman 1332... couldn't find it in any stores though, so I grabbed a 32oz bottle from Amazon for $16 to experiment with. I cut it with water in 4oz increments until I was happy with the viscosity, which ended up being about 50/50. Mounted my new DHF/DHRII combo, but had to redo the tape on the rear, which meant removing and re-seating the valve stem... which of course, leaked, despite my best effort shaking that side of the wheel. It was flat by morning. I aired it back up and went ahead for a ride though, and the sealant did its first job by the end; no more leaking stem.

Another nice thing is that it doesn't stink! I hate the smell of Stan's.

I've always enjoyed this foxhunt POV vid from Warner😄

     https://www.redbull.com/ke-en/videos/red-bull-foxhunt-rob-warner-pov

That was pretty funny, he's no where near as aggressive as Bruni or Gee; Warner seems to not take it as seriously. I thought Bruni was aggressive in the one I posted, but I watched one with Gee and he is brutal! Just about every person he passes eats it hard... I think my strategy would be to wait for him to pass, then dive in 😬

  5. ...or maybe he's at such a level that there are no risky lines. This sent me down a worm hole of his races, didn't realize that he was a 3-time Elite world champion DH racer, but then all foreign names start to look the same to me... here he is doing a RB Foxhunt with Gee Atherton and Greg Callaghan. It's basically the same thing; start from outside and behind the pack (550 in this case), and see if you can get to the front...

This reminds me of why I don't want to race. I have little interest in jockeying for position at the start of an event, not getting to ride "my line," but having to ride the line that available, or having some guy yelling to pass me, only to ride his axle for next couple of miles. I make some exception for endurance events.

Same here, I did a couple of "XC" races in the early 90's with mass starts, and if you can't get to the front of the pack before the single track started, it was nothing but frustration. I would have been much better suited for enduro format, had it existed for MTB. In hind site though, I was just too polite; if I did it all over again with my current attitude, I wouldn't have made any friends 😁

I'd say there's no way the dude in the video was riding blind. He seemed to know every go-around, b-line, or unpopular a-line available to make passes on the other riders. And they all worked out. If you're riding blind, some of those alternate lines are going to be dead enders.

Nope, either that or he took some serious risks without knowing if a line would pan-out, like 6:11 and 6:36... but he knew exactly where to go without hesitation.

If you don’t want the hassle of making your own, Goat Head Bike Co sealant is $25 for 32oz:
    https://www.goatheadbikeco.com/products/tubeless-tire-sealant?variant=51250349323

It came with the last set of wheels/tires I bought so I just kept using it- works fine.

Cool, might have to try that out. Can't find much about it online, but it seams that everything is pretty equal these days. Only concern is the "pouch", as I keep it in my gear box in my van, and I' be worried about something puncturing, crushing or rubbing a hole in it. Wonder if it is Stan's-compatible so I can just refill my Stan's bottle...

Gathering ingredients and mixing a batch is a little time consuming, but it yields a large quantity so you don't have to do it often.

  8. Used the last of my 32 oz bottle of Stan's that I paid $24 for on Amazon (Stan's store), only to find it has gone up to $50...?! Checked Jenson and CRC and it's $34 (+shipping). Orange Seal is up too.

With 4 bikes with tubeless tires now, this has me considering going back to home brew. I had a pretty decent formula tweaked a few years ago, but Stan's was still a little better and I finally decided that the @40% cost savings per unit volume wasn't worth the hassle for 2 bikes at the time. Now, if ingredients haven't gone up too much, it might be worth it.

The problem is, my best formula was shared in the Bike Mojo thread, which now appears to be no more... I don't remember it, so I have to start over.

So... if you have a formula that works, post up!

To be fair, I think the 3rd lug would line up better with the way SRAM lines up the cable entry into their derailleurs. I've actually always liked how SRAMs are more tucked in close to the frame with a nice pivot. Shimano has a little too much slack in their routing for my preference. I'm always afraid it's going to snag on something. Never has, but I'm afraid. 🤣

Yeah, I don't see owning a SRAM RD anytime in the near future, unless it comes on a bike that I buy... and I haven't bought a complete bike in almost 2 decades. All of my current bikes have Shimano, and I like to keep compatibility across them, then I only have to carry spares for one system on trips.

BTW, still an awesome bike! What are you planning on doing with the 1st frame?

Not exactly sure yet. One of the reasons for the warranty replacement was that the paint arrived with a really fine crack pattern all over the frame (have to look close to see it), which allowed moisture in and started to rust through the paint, causing the paint to flake in areas, especially near the top of the seat stays. It's purely cosmetic though, so I'll probably strip the paint, oil it down and leave it bare and build a permanent single speed so I don't have to switch one hardtail back and forth. Also, without paint I don't have to worry about chipping the top tube when the brake levers hit it (that was another issue; he was out of shorter head tubes, so he used a longer one that resulted in the brake levers not clearing the TT).

Well, that was a surprise... I got a response this time!

"I just talked with Marino, I'm sorry for the wait, can you please send me a summary of how you want the cable routing, he's a bit confused with it."

Not sure what he's confused about, he got it right on the first one. I'll see if we can keep this moving this time...

I think I know what he's talking about now, although no one asked for clarification before... one of the issues with the first frame was that he put 3 cable bosses on the seat stay for the rear derailer cable, and the rear-most one was too close:

I sure hope that's all we need to get past this hurdle, lol.

Thanks to St.Bernardo for giving me the bump to try one more time...

True, they don't have far to fall, less gravitational pull and those rubbery bones help.

I often say that I must've been made of rubber as a kid. Sometimes I look back on the stupid things we did and absolutely cringe... we used to ride our freestyle bikes at SHSU, before "street riding" was a thing, launching off 10' staircases on super stiff 20" 48 spoke wheels and steel BMX frames with zero flex... a "huck to flat" that I wouldn't even consider on 8" travel DH bike now, makes my whole body hurt just thinking about it... but we didn't even think twice, it's just what we did.

Even further back, pre-teens, it was all about launching higher, HIGHER!... and we crashed a lot, but I don't remember anyone getting hurt... at least not badly. I remember one time, we were at my neighbor's house, and their (2 brothers) dad was building a detached garage, and the slab sat for some time. I remember it being about shoulder high at the back, so at 10-ish years old, probably about 4' high, with a gentle slope down a couple more feet to 2 or 3 stacked railroad ties, then a flat back yard. The driveway sloped down from the street, and we'd get as much speed as we could to try to clear the ties... after a few cases and face plants, we realized that it wasn't going to work. So, our solution, instead of going in to play Atari, was to build a ~12" ramp at the edge of the slab to boost us a few more feet high for a longer arc... We sent it over and over again, until we were bored with it, and decided that wasn't enough... we drug their rickety wood picnic table probably 20-30' past the landing (rural neighborhood, big yards), then propped up some plywood on some boards, so that we could launch them consecutively... that was a hoot, until one of the brothers cracked his '80 Diamondback Pro frame, THEN it was time for Atari... My Mongoose held up fine though 😁

And I wonder why I have so many joint problems now... 🤔

Couple things I was thinking on ride today..

YMCA has got to be one of the tougher greens.
And on double down, at what point is it considered a passing grade ..would getting off your bike less than 10 times over the 3mile be considered a C- ...that was my goal and I dismounted 10 times with 2 dabs so I called it 11.

I'll tuck my head and kick my bike back over to walnut creek...

Don't over think it. Just do what you have to do to enjoy it, and if you don't enjoy it at all, then maybe spend your time at WC. If you walk 70% of it but still can't wait to get back for more, then that's all that matters. Obsessing about where you stand and "dab stats" will only zap the fun out of it.

Just don't do like some and modify the trail to meet your level...

I’m don’t know why in the world but I actually LIKE a little cigarette smoke smell. It makes me chuckle when I smell it out on a trail where there is usually cardio type activity occurring.

I actually saw a dude on a bike stop for a cig on Picnic once. Classic!

Weirdo. I can't stand it in just about any occasion, but especially when I am breathing deep and enjoying the semi-fresh suburban park air...

I agree.  I don't want to smell any unnatural scents like perfumes of colognes or hear anything but my bike, conversations, and nature.  Don't play music over speaker.  Put some damn earbuds in!!!

So much this, and I'll add cigarette smoke 🤢

    UR ghey.
The timing on this is relevant though... that was back when the original log bump was there, before it was destroyed and replaced by the 2 posts... which recently disappeared because it probably "killed someone's flow"... 🙄

I wish I could muster the energy to single-speed Brushy again, that was the most fun. And that old XTC was fun...

I left a comment under that video and the video created assured me that this is perfectly legit, gave other readers specific directions to find the trail entrance.

Yikes, yea, he pretty much put it out there for everyone... dude's gonna make some enemies that way. I got hate for posting some videos from there, and I didn't even include anything that would be a clue to where I was...
