One of these tree limbs destroyed my back. Not because it fell on me, but to strained it trying to cut and move a large one that was leaning on my house. Just got back from Airrosti and I feel a bit better.

Hoping to be back to full strength in time for Hill Country Hundy.

    Airrosti is awesome

Man, these have been completely of my Radar but I've been wanting to explore that area for awhile! Is there a recommended route/ sequence to take?

@RedRider3141 We have group rides on Thursday evenings at 6:30 pm. Our standard route is to start at Katy Crossing and do a lap or 2. Distance is 1.8 miles, very session-able and scenic little loop that rides great both directions. From there, we head upstream to Chautauqua and finally to Gotham, then head back and hit the trails following a downstream direction. There are more bits and pieces around town that will be built out and expanded in due time. Our goal is to build 5 miles of high quality purpose built singletrack per year.

  3. As Zander mentioned above, if you visit gtxtrails.org you can find a nifty interactive trail map.

The GTX Trails are designed to be fun, flowy, and fast. They are the yin to Lake Georgetown’s yang. What they lack in mileage, they make up for in quality. And the good news is, we build more tread every month.

Chautauqua (pronounced “Sh!t Taco”) is complete and is a fun diversion from the paved path in between Katy Crossing and Gotham. If you start at Katy Crossing Trail, head back upstream on paved path on the South Fork San Gabriel River, pass Blue Hole Park, and eventually you will hit Chautauqua; after that cross university (Hwy 29) bridge and dive down the concrete ramp, you will be at Gotham. An out and back route from Katy Crossing Trail to Gotham gives you over 10 miles (much is on paved path granted) but still a fun outing on the bike. Hope you have a great time! Post back here and tell us what you think!

see attached screenshot for map of Chautauqua trail.

  6. Spread the word: Georgetown Trails Foundation will be back at Chautauqua Park on November 20th at 9am. Come out and help us dial in the new Chautauqua Trail! We will be building berms, rerouting a segment away from river rocks, and building some advanced "A-lines" along the rocky bluffs. As always, trail tools will be provided - all you need to bring are gloves, water, and sturdy shoes. We appreciate the help - together we are making Georgetown an awesome place to enjoy the outdoors. Happy Trails!

  7. Come out and build some sweet new singletrack with Georgetown Trails Foundation on October 16th at 9am. Meet at Chautauqua Park, where we will be extending a new segment that flows alongside the rocky bluffs of the San Gabriel River’s South Fork. We’ve got plenty of spare tools - just bring gloves, water, and some sturdy shoes. Should be a fun time!

  8. Loved the article. Paul is an awesome guy who rides with absolute steez. Super humble but kicks total ass. He also happens to run the friendliest bike shop in Texas. I’m a proud owner of the LGT Dragon shirt. It’s fun and IMO a great way to promote the trail. Hope all of y’all get to experience the unique experience of the Dragon. Perhaps a bit of an acquired taste, but WOW! Always feels like a badass old Tejas backcountry mission. It is an amazing (but grueling) experience that is special in a way all its own.

Happy trails, and watch out for snakes!

Gravel bikes = drop bars, which makes me sad.  Still ride my road bike a little, but for several reasons, prefer/need a flat handle bar.

You can actually get the Salsa Journeyman specified with flat bars. There are options out there for you!

  10. I also have a Salsa Journeyman Apex 1. I’m primarily a mountain biker, and decided to get the journeyman to have a bike to ride when trails are wet, to dabble into the bikepacking scene, do some gravel races with, and to ride the MS 150 with (MS 150 ended up getting canceled this year thanks to Covid19).

I must admit, I’ve had a lot more fun with it than I was expecting. I have the 650b wheels and it’s awesome for mixed surface paths, gravel, and mellow single track. Used it for a 65 mile gravel grinder and had a great time. Excited to do some true bikepacking once the pandemic is over. I’ve also found that the extra miles I have put on the journeyman have helped with my MTB fitness.

I mainly got it bc that’s what my LBS has in stock (Georgetown  Cyclewerx - Paul is the coolest dude in the business) but I also think Salsa is a sweet brand. Very happy with the choice. Price was definitely right.

  11. I use the tailgate pad method. And by pad, I use an old southwestern print wool blanket. Cheap, can hold 7 bikes at a time, looks right, feels pure. Never had any problems with high speed interstate travel.

As a bonus, you can throw down the blanket and change your shoes or pass out on after a hard ride.

  12. Like you, I also ride with SPD clipless pedals. A year ago I had similar symptoms where the distal aspect of my feet would start to go numb after a few miles of riding. Luckily, the foot numbness resolved after I bought a better fitting pair of new shoes. Perhaps you now have an excuse to get a shoe upgrade!

When I was out there we saw a guy at the bottom who had taken a spill with only a half shell. His face looked like ground hamburger. A full face should be standard equipment out there. They rent them out there too. It's way cheaper facial reconstruction surgery.

I agree. Take the plunge and rent or buy a full face helmet. It took me a while to adjust to the higher speeds attainable at Spider Mountain vs typical local trails.  Quick reaction times are crucial. Unless you’re on the double black, there’s really no feature that’s super technical (my opinion), but crashes can get gnarly fast at warp speed.

Has anyone been out here on a Friday yet? Friend is coming down on the 20th and thinking I’d rather go at noon on a Friday rather than on Saturday morning. Is it pretty empty on Friday when they open?

I was out there this past Friday and the line was never more than 3 riders. Virtually as soon as I finished a run, I was back on the lift!

It was a surreal experience to be on a lift in Texas. Excited to see new trails built out there in the future.

  15. Got my start mountain biking in Cameron Park when I was a college kid at Baylor. The area now known as “the Ranch” has had some sweet singletrack since at least when I was still in school (late aughts). Wall rides and flow jumps are a welcome addition! Super appreciative of the new owner and the effort to improve the trails!

Does anyone have any pics from the workday they can post? I didn’t think to take before and after pics of the berms we built. I didn’t have a chance to go look at what everyone else did. And I haven’t had a chance to get back out there.

Didn’t take many photos but I did get a pic of the compact excavator doing its thing. Truly amazing to watch - I want one 🤪! Berms were built in 5 minutes or less. I had a lot of fun, hope to be a part of more days like this in the future. Thanks to all who helped organize and to all the other volunteers.
