  1. Yeah, back in the mid/late 90’s when BSS was still on Toomey, Hill would sponsor the group ride. It rolled out from the shop. He and Laura showed up on a tandem dressed as Mr & Mrs Clause every year. We went thru TOL under mopac to Castle Hill then up to 37th and then back thru UT down speedway to congress. Ended with a drag race down Congress Avenue from the capitol to the town lake bridge every year. By 04/05 when I was dragging my kid in a trailer it went from 40-50 to well over 100 and got pretty rowdy.

  2. Yeah, if it’s the Garmin the owner hopped in on our group ride yesterday. His first time there so didn’t know trail but thinks he lost it after new edition lollipop heading back to redhorn.  He’s been off the bike for a while so probably not on here. See his post on the suburban ninja fb group or ping me some contact info and I’ll relay it to him.

    Singlespeeding on Port Aransas beach.

Basically made it about 50' with my street tires. I brought a wet noodle to a knife fight.

Gotta ride about 6-8 feet from waterline to stay on top of the sand! PITA to get saltwater/sand out so I usually ride inland along the coast hwy to Rockport and out to copano Bay Area.

The only hesitation on the wolf tooth may be the bits. If you lose one you're screwed so I would want to see how well the tool snaps shut and stays shut.

Yeah I would probably slip a piece of roadie toob or rubber band over it just in case. Seems I read on the non-pliers one the keychain doohickey locks the cover closed.

  5. Just saw this one from Wolf Tooth for $40. Looks like it has good leverage, 8mm, and 2 sizes of torx head.

For $70 there’s a version with built in quick link pliers, valve tools, and quick link holder

the second might be my new packless riding tool! Usually just have a CO2 and carts held together with a chunk of old tube like a fat rubber band. Always ends up poking me when I try to squeeze in a multi tool.

  6. That’s called a chain tensioner aka chain tug in the old bmx world. So even with the screw well snugged against the end of the frame it’s sliding?  Is the screw slipping above/below the end of frame or is it loosening up? That screw on the end is “supposed to” keep it from sliding forward without having to tighten the crap out of the slider bolts.  All the chain tugs I’ve used on track end bikes have stayed put so not sure what’s up.  If the screw is loosening a lock washer on it between nut and end of chain tug (black piece) should help.  On the actual slider I’ve seen star washers used but they bite into the frame a bit.

There’s lots of replacements available. Maybe look more in the bmx realm. Example below:

  7. Came close to getting taken out Saturday on picnic by a guy on a Devinci emtb. Had to holler out at him to avoid a head on and he ditched left instead of right and dumped the bike dead in front of me covering the whole trail. Totally out of control on a busy trail on a busy day.

Nothing most us haven’t encountered but I doubt he would have been moving as fast under his own power.  Had I been a noobie that wasn’t looking way ahead and reacted quickly it would have ended different from him eating shit into a bush but walking away unharmed.

This is why I hold onto old business cards. They do the same. And, if you want to call some from Taiwan that you met 15 years ago, yeah, it can do that too.

So it just toes in the pads like rim brakes setup has been done for nearly a century?  I used to use pretty much anything about as thick like packaging pads came in, top of cereal box, whatever was handy. Never really thought disk brakes had enough play to toe in. Hmmmm

  9. Oh, and back on topic. Every camelbak I have ever owned the bite valve ends up dripping which is annoying when hot, and a royal PITA when it’s cold. Kid also managed to bite thru 2 when she had a mini mule. The design is infamous for leaking all over your shit if you put anything on it in transit including the freaking camelbak. 🙄 camelbak will sell you more, Osprey has sent me replacements when mine was starting to crack after 4-5 years but still didn’t leak.

Almost 30 years of using both, here’s my experience. in Louisiana you sweat a ton more from the high humidity so I had to wash my camelbak often. When the first Mule I bought mid 90’s started falling apart from washing they wouldn’t even offer a discount much less warranty replace. I’ve torn a couple too, they suggest retailers near me, so just had to find someone to sew it. Buckle broke on one camelbak from normal use and had to steal one off an old one I used for trail work. Osprey I slammed the waist buckle in my tailgate and they replaced it for free and fixed other things I didn’t even ask about, replaced magnet etc. sent them in for tears twice too.  they also replaced a bladder I split in a crash. I break shit, nothing new, not just bike stuff, so I’m willing to pay a premium to get better stuff with good warranties. Osprey is competitively priced, has a premium warranty and outstanding customer service. Also their pack designs drive the market now and others imitate (they were first with the waist strap pockets). They’re a backpack company first and it shows.

Another believer! Where do you get your Tri-Flow? After moving from out-of-state 5 years ago I'm still ordering online because I never see it locally.

REI gateway usually has it. Still prefer it on road bike. Picks up too much dirt off road.

The dam is great, really wide sidewalks on either side, you can pass someone without having to stop and grab the chain link fence. Plus some crossing lights for Pleasant Valley Road.

Interesting. Didn’t know it was done, though I haven’t been down there in months. Usually ride SWC trail and just go over the montopolis bridge so haven’t tried it yet.

and always remember, the derailer is the slave, the shifter is the master. Put your money in the shifter and you won’t regret it.

Was going to suggest the same. Read several long term reviews where they said GX der and XO1 shifter was just as smooth as all XO1. And shifters are cheaper to upgrade! My GX has been more trouble free than my last XT drivetrain.

  13. My search was not only space, but comfort in the back seats. Mid-sized trucks can be pretty lacking in both.  We do multi 7 hour each way trips a year since before my 17 y.o. was born. Road-trip capability so I can drive without them complaining or driving me nuts is first for me!

Kids in car seats or boosters kicking you in the back, nope! Then teens needing more leg room plus complaining about an uncomfortable seat most of the day, nope!  I like to stretch out on long drives so I can see at 6’4” you crowd the back seat!  I keep vehicles for a long time too so I get the hunt for keeping everyone happy. 😬
