Okay girls....you're both pretty.  Deception and PP are both crown jewels in the Austin Mountain biking world.  I generally ride both when I ride Brushy but for very different reasons.  PP is a gut busting mash-fest where I try and go as fast as I can and not screw up a corner.  Deception is a smile inducing gnar-fest that never fails to give me a challenge just when I need it.  I love them both for different reasons but I love them both.  When you throw in Picnic, SN, and the Christ Church jump line, there is a HUGE variety of trail in a relatively small area where I can take any rider from my 12 year old to a seasoned enduro-brah and show them a good time.

We're extremely lucky to have these trails and these trail builders that make them possible.  That is something we should all agree on.

ha ha, First-blood and I build together all the time...just some friendly S!@# stirring. We were building together on Deception when those killer bees attacked.

Whatever Strava NERD. I just wanna fight. I think you are just still mad that those honey bees attacked you in Deception. You haven't been back since.

C'mon now. Strava nerd. You know the easy answer. It's less about popularity or more better options and more that PP (and SJ) and well within the capabilities or far more people. I would imagine D has increased in popularity if compared in a timeline of itself, but is not as widely used for the above reason along with ease of accessibility. Also i would bet money that most riders that are doing D in varying lengths use PP as a good leg warm up. Back a year ago when i had freetime to ride more that's my route. Either half of PP then parts or all of D. Or All of Sub Ninja to half of PP to parts of D. I dont imagine to many people drive or ride to PP and just do a lap of that and leave.

The number of people riding Deception has increased over the years, but it's popularity has decreased.

It's not a bash on Deception, just simple math.

In 2011/2012 when building started and there was only a few miles of trail and a limited number of riders. The number of riders using the Brushy Creek Single Track has increased substantially along with miles of trail since then, but an ever increasing percentage of those riders are using other sections of the Brushy Creek Single Track because of the reasons you mentioned above, so therefore Deceptions popularity has decreased even though the number of riders using it has increased...or it use to be a big fish in a small pond, but now it's the same size fish in a much bigger pond. The attached picture shows strava riders on Saturday Feb 8th on Deception vs Peddlers from 12pm - 7pm.

As the difficulty of a trail increases there's going to be fewer people that can ride it. It doesn't mean one is better than the other. An easier trail will always be ridden by more people.

So, how long is the current version of Peddlers?

I went over there again today after riding Deception, were I saw one other rider... but there were at least a dozen on PP, including an e-bike, and I am pleased to say that even in my current sad state, I caught up to him. I also didn't see him roosting or doing throttle wheelies, so that's good 😉

BTW, I'm shocked at how much the trails have worn down in the year that I was out; 1/4 is about to turn a solid black (if it hasn't already), and most of the stumps I cut a couple of years ago are already showing 4-6" again... guess I'm due for another saw walk.

Based on Strava, Deception is now one of the lesser ridden trails since there are so many other options.

    Peddlers is 2.8 miles.

I can see the general line, but you're right, it looks so much different now.  Just think if this continued to the east side and how much has changed over there.

Here's the East side, it went the other direction a year ago.

  7. Get ready, i need to vent.

I was at Peddlers last night..it will not be ready this today, there was standing water in places. But still people were riding it. These people were not noob's and should have known better...and each one of them said exactly the same thing (that i hear everytime) "Oh, i was just thinking it was too muddy, i'll exit the trail when i can".

    1. That's B.S. on Peddlers you know within the 1st 100 feet if it's going to be too muddy.

    2. Stop putting your need to ride above the longevity of the trail and the time trail builders are going to have to spend to fix the trail after your selfishness. We could be using those hours to build new stuff, so your just making the trail less fun for yourself.

    3. When you get asked to stop riding the trail because it's too muddy, just get off your bike and walk it out, don't keep riding "to the next exit". It's like a little F you to the builder because your continuing to do the exact thing he's asking you to stop doing. It might seem like a small thing to you, but it's a huge thing to the person that has spent thousands of hours building what you're destroying. I personally have spent at least 3,000 -4,000 hours working on Peddlers Pass over the last 4 years (maybe more), so you can image what i think when someone keeps riding after I've asked them to stop.

So trying to ease back into riding some, went over to the "new" peddlers for some low impact pedaling... Wow, someone's been hard at work! I guess it's been a couple of years since I rode it last (since finger recovery). Question though: I started the right direction at the entrance, and seemed to continue the correct direction (arrow signs facing me), until I reached the creek section closest to the eastern-most ball field parking lot, where I noticed some of the signs faced the other direction... I decided to just keep going, and once I passed back under Parmer, the signs were facing me again... I'm fairly certain I didn't jump-trail twice, but since many of the re-used segments reversed direction with the new trails and re-routes, it's possible that I did out of old habit... or are the signs backwards?

No sign's should be backwards. The whole trail is now counter-clockwise. I'll check the signs

’m out at peddlers. Hope it’s ok but i took chain down. Dirt not sticking at all...slick roots n rocks, but duh. 🚲

If it's not sticking to your tire it ok to take the chain down.  Thats very surprising its ok to ride.

  10. We're done with the mini-x (for now). We built 12 new berms, a big roller, and lessened the slope of the trail after the bridge that crosses the drainage ditch and takes you under Parmer Lane. We foucsed our efforts on the corners that were slowing everyone down. The biggest change is that long dusty right hand turn in the cedars before the roller section, you can now pedal as fast as you want through that section. I'm guessing everyone's times are going to drop by 30 seconds, it will be interesting to watch. Report back how much your times have dropped...fyi some of the berms will still need tweaking and to be ridden in.

  11. Favor to ask.

While building with the mini-x I hit the motherload of rock (see picture), it's a few turns after the Cedar Bridge (east of Parmer). To be efficient with the mini-x (we have it for one week) I didn't do the hand finishing work and moved on to the next project after clearing a rideable path at the bottom of the berm.

If you ride Peddlers Pass (or Brushy Creek) this week it would be amazing if you could stop and pick out a few rocks then throw them behind the berm. It will be a huge help...and you will make a Trail Builders Christmas dream come true.
