    At least this site is a dedicated Austin mountain biking forum run by someone who has been riding local Austin trails for the last 20 years, versus some mysterious admin on MoJo that doesn't live in the Austin area and doesn't even care enough about the site to fix the spambot problem, not to mention doing absolutely zero moderation.  The troll nature of Bike MoJo kept many people from joining and participating over the years.  Also, there are no ads on this site, unlike MoJo, and you don't have to buy a subscription to get important features like the ability to upload photos to your posts.

    I will fix the unread issue soon, I am just very busy right now getting ready for a big show I have to attend next month in Portland.

    I'm not going to apologize for not allowing trolls like Bartman to have a home here.

    First of all, I'd like to say that I am genuinely appreciative of what you are doing here. You created this forum and took on the thankless job of moderating it just for your love of the ATX MTB community. That can't be stressed enough.

    Perhaps the fact that Mojo lived on for so long in spite of the software related shortcomings is a testament to the freewheeling format. I loved it because it was like hanging out with your bike buddies in the parking lot after a ride. We all ride bikes. That's what bonds us, but we don't talk about them 24/7. We talk about life, kids, bikes, beer, the last concert we went to, bikes again, and so on. You never get moved to a different tailgate for bring up something off topic.

    Mojo was a ghost town before the bots took over, so nothing new if this site is slow at times. Objectively, the only real activity on the mojo was when there was some sort of fighting with either bartman or riding again. That's not a MTB forum, its the comment section on TMZ.

    There's plenty of sites out there to insult one another in anonymity.

    I didn't say slow. I said boring. A thread on Mojo about trying to sell a fish tank turned into comedy gold. Here, it would turn into a lesson about where to properly post non-bike related for sale items.

  3. I agree with Sluggo. This site is the corporate version of Mojo. A PC mountain bike forum exists. It's called MTBR. I don't go there because it's boring. I have more unread threads here than I ever had on Mojo (despite the fact I continuously accidently mark them all as read). Why? because they are boring. PC is boring. Don't be boring.

    Ive been tempted to go up and use my trailer and camp. But it is a shortish drive and the Air BnBs and Homeaways are tempting so a trailer isnt economical all things considered. But I like it and it is relaxing.

    Yeah, if you can get a couple other riders and split it 3 or 4 ways, getting an Airbnb is no-brainer. There are a ton of options for $100-$150 per night. You get a whole 3/2 house with actual toilets and showers, full kitchen, everyone get a bedroom, garage to store and work on bikes, and a backyard to drink beer in. That's hard to beat.

    I found the code responsible for displaying the popup on mobile devices and not doing so on other devices..

                if( ips.utils.events.isTouchDevice() ) {
                    ips.ui.alert.show( {
                        type: 'confirm',
                        icon: 'question',
                        message: ips.getString('notificationMarkAsRead'),
                        callbacks: {
                            ok: function () {
                                execMark();
                            }
                        }
                    });
                } else {
                    execMark();
                }

    Unfortunately, this code is in a massive (2MB!) 'javascript.xml' file that is compiled and put into the database.  I have not yet figured out a way to force the forum to recompile this file so the database is updated with my changes.  Once I do, a confirmation should always appear when clicking one of those icons, regardless of what kind of device you are using.

    You are awesome.

    More recently, as in a month ago, I was riding with AustinBike at Barton Creek Greenbelt.  As we were ascending the rocky, technical climb on Jedi before reaching the top of Mulch Hill, all resistance suddenly gave way as I was conquering a large rock.  My chain and rear derailleur got sucked into my rear wheel.  At first I thought the hanger had snapped, but it turns out the bolt holding the hanger worked its way out.  We reattached the derailleur, but the screw was stripped, so it could not be tightened.  Also, the rear derailleur was bent pretty badly, and I could only use a few gears.  We descended along the (newish?) singletrack along Mulch Hill and then rode back to 360 on the main trail at a slower pace than normal as I didn't want to put too much pressure on my drive train.  We were near the end of our ride anyway.  Did make it back, then brought the bike to the shop to get them to replace the rear derailleur and give the bike a needed tuneup.  And I bought another rear derailleur hanger since I didn't have one on me, much to my surprise.

    A few wraps of teflon tape might have helped to hold that stripped bolt in while you limped home.

    I'll look at this later today.  Changing it is fairly easy.  However, if I alter this behavior it will then differ from the thousands of other Invision forums out there that all behave the same way.  This includes another forum I have been running on the same software for over a decade at this point, and I haven't had anyone complain (or it's been very rare) about accidentally marking forums as read.  Although I'm sure it happens.

    As I stated above, I think it's a boneheaded move on their part.  Especially as there is a "Mark forum as read" link once you open a forum up.  I certainly do not want people accidentally marking forums as "Unread" and then not catching up on threads and interacting with them because at that point it becomes more of a hassle than it's worth.  So let me dig into it a bit before I go ahead and make that change.

    Thanks for the feedback,

     ..Al

    I understand. I'm really not trying to complain about it. I don't think changing the icon in the way I mentioned would alter behavior one bit. The warning would be just as good.

  8. For me it's teflon tape. I have used it trailside to fix leaky valve stems and loose bolts. It's lightweight and doesn't take up much space.

    If you have a leaky valve stem, wedge some tape between the rim and that little nut. I also use it in addition to the little rubber part inside the rim. I've frequently had trouble with that interface between the valve and the hole in the rim. Several wraps of teflon over that rubber seems to always do the trick.

    I fixed a bolt on a seatpost that kept backing out and tilting the saddle to unridable angles by wrapping a few layers of tape around the threads. Probably a good idea to replace with Locktite when you get home, but on the trail, it's easier than carrying a tube of Locktite.

    Alternatively, what is one thing you have had in there for years and never use?

    You're right, that does seem like a pretty stupid design decision.  I think that's always how it's worked with Invision's forum software.  It does seem ridiculous that they used the same icons at a different size that visually represent the same thing (shows you if there are new messages in those forums/threads), but the action is completely different.  Let me think about that.  I'm also going to see if I can hunt down any discussions about this very subject on their official support forum.

     ..Al

    Dammit. I did it again today. Marked the whole Mountain Biking forum "read" on accident. Is seems a bit trivial at first, but now I will probably abandon many of the topics I have been saving for later instead of participation in the discussion. That really sucks.

    Do you have access to the source code? It is just a Font Awesome icon. If you could, find it, it could easily be changed from <i class="fa fa-comments"> to "fa fa-book" (which would display a book as in "read"). Finding it is the hard part.

    Thanks for your hard work!

  10. Homemade tubeless sealant

    I cut valves from old tubes and wrap as much teflon tape around them as possible. (Might start a new thread about how much I love teflon tape)

    I use wine corks as bar plugs. (got sick of losing the plastic ESI ones)

    I use gorilla glue and patches cut from old tubes to repair tires with small sidewall tears.

    I've used everything from 3M insulated mastic electrical tape to used tubes and tires for frame protection.
