Does anyone around here have the tools or feel confident drilling and tapping a cranks to make them shorter? Trying to make some old 170mm SRAM cranks more like 155 or a short rider. Yes, I can start calling machine shops, but I want to see if anyone here has a specific recommendation of where to get it done. The cranks are cheap and old, so I'll just replace them if it's cost-prohibitive.

On that note, why in the hell have so many bicycle companies held out for so long from making proportional cranks? A grown woman who is 5' 1/2" should not be turning over 170mm cranks on her gravel bike.

Seems like 9/16" regular and reverse thread tap set are a normal bike shop thing, the best thing may be to drill the holes and take them to a bike shop for threading.  Old BSS was reasonable for machining type work (facing, reaming, chasing).

  2. What a deal!

That looks like a hotrock 24".  My son had one.  It weighed in at 30+ lbs which for a little person is too heavy.  When he moved up to his brother's 26" (also heavy) I was able to upgrade that with parts from my old BMC and we got the weight down to ~25lbs IIRC.

Knowing thread pitch is really important, with that data you can often find something that will work in a pinch.

I have a cheap HF tap and die set and it includes a thread pitch gauge.  It's one of the most used tools in my garage.

  4. They make aftermarket 37mm seat post clamps (and is indeed what I ordered 2 of) but nobody stocks them locally.  I normally also order spare derraileur hangers which I carry in my camelback for rides like the Dragonslayer or long rides on the BCGB.  Thanks for the tip on the shock bolt.  I'll order a couple of those too.

  5. I saw it a couple of weeks ago.  It was on the descent trail coming down from the top by the stores.  Definitely caught me by surprise.  I think we should call it The Brain b/c a white rodent surviving with all the red tail hawks around has got to be smart.

Yeah it's nuts. The difference in opinion between kerr and bruni is something else.

Yeah the comments were not kind to Bruni.  I think most everyone else agreed on the format:  no semis, 60 qualify for 30 to make the finals which will be on TV.  The number for women is less but there was less agreement other than it needs to be more than 10.

BTW, WBD may also kill HBO/Max with their decisions.

    Everything discovery touches dies.

    Shit.  You weren’t kidding…

GCN+ and the GCN app will be closing on 19 December 2023 in all countries and regions. GCN+ subscribers will receive a refund for the time remaining on their subscription.

Cycling fans can continue to enjoy cycling content at globalcyclingnetwork.com and the GCN YouTube channel. To find out where you can watch cycling events previously available on GCN+, go to Where can I watch cycling events?

…of course in the US we’re fucked bc it doesn’t seem at this point that even discovery+ is an option like in the UK.  Please RedBull pick it up!!

On 12/19 I’m deleting my GCN account.  I’m expecting FloSports to fold too given the settlement and layoffs….

  8. My main bike had a broken seat post clamp that I couldn't get a part in before the Palo Duro marathon, so I tried to get my old bike (2010 Tallboy) that was setup for my wife.  I got pedals and seat moved over, and a new tire, with fresh sealant only to find out the shock was not holding air.  This bike has not been ridden in about 3 years or so.

So I went to my P29er SS and did a single painful lap on it before pulling the plug (super fun trail...started riding slow to conserve energy/legs but that's boring, so I decided to just ride a fun lap).

When I finished, the fork lowers (yep, both) were completely covered in shock oil that had leaked from the seals.  This bike is stored hanging from the rear tire, so the uppers are lower than the lowers.

The Tallboy is stored hanging from the handlebar and the seat.

    1.  Do we need to cycle the shocks/forks every once in a while to keep them lubed?

    2.  Anyone else storing bike from rear tire experience leaking oil?

  9. I think the places that will remain will be the ones that have consistent food, good ambiance.   Pinthouse Pizza has pizzas until closing time, while some have food trucks that change, or run out of food early, or close the kitchen very early.  Being adjacent to walkable neighborhoods is a plus as well.
