  1. Both the 530 (you mention 520 but that is the previous version) and element bolt are not going to be amazing for navigation.

I have a 520 and you can certainly load up a turn by turn GPX file and use it to navigate but that’s about it. The lack of a touch screen doesn’t give you a lot of control. The map you see on the device is your current location at a scale of the devices choosing.

If you were ever in a situation where you wanted to get back to your car using the best route, you’d be SOL as the 520 can’t do that on the fly.

it sounds like the 830 is going to be a better device for you. The touch screen allows you to pan around the map and you can even create adhoc routes while out on the trail.

  2. Being forced to live vicariously through my GoPro footage during these trying times. Put together a little highlights video of an In and Out run of 1/4 notch I shot a few months ago.

Quick edit from Monday. Chickened out on the second drop in snail but was too tired to go back up

Nice line @1:58! I always hang a sharp left up the rock ramp and power my way up. Your line looks much more efficient.

I don’t want to specifically call them out since they’re new and I got the feeling the guy I was talking to may need some training. I couldn’t wrap my head around $799 for suspension services and $830 for complete rebuild. A two year old bike doesn’t need every bearing replaced does it?

Any recommendations for suspension and dropper service in N Austin? Maybe Peddler?

No. Sealed cartridge bearings are not something you typically do preventive maintenance on. Run them till they die.

I’ve never had a fork or dropper serviced because I do it myself but I use Cycle Progression for my Fox rear shocks. They have a great reputation when it comes to suspension service. Not N. Austin but they are who I always recommend.

  5. I need to get my suspension and dropper serviced. It’s way overdue. Nothing fancy. Yari fork and Rock Shox Deluxe shock. I was quoted around $185 for the 50 hour service and $75 for the dropper post. They said it should really get the 100 hour service. I’ve ridden it for two years without servicing so that made sense to me. However they quoted me $800 for the 100 hour service. Does that sound right? They have a package where they would do that plus take apart the bike to the bare frame, replacing every pivot and everything for $830. Does this sound off?

Shoot. At that price you should just buy a new fork and shock. A full fork, shock, and dropper service should be somewhere around half the price they are quoting minus parts.

Don’t know what dropper you have but a service kit for all three should run you about $100-$125.

    Who is charging that much?

  6. Anyone have one I can borrow? Need to bleed a set of LevelT’s and while I can do a gravity bleed without the adapter, it sure would be more thorough to do it with the SRAM kit. I only have the old sram kit.

If you don’t mind coming up to Cedar Park, I’m happy to let you borrow mine.

  7. So I just picked up a lightly used Ibis S35 aluminum wheelset of FB marketplace. Now I’ve got my original S35 carbon wheels and the new to me S35 aluminum wheels. Planning on using one set for shorter rides on more techy trails and the other set for 30+ mile rides where I’m riding partially on the road. I’ve got the Maxxis Assegais that came with my bike and a set of Maxxis Rekons hanging around. Additionally, I’ve got one set of Cushcore inserts.

    Here is what I’m thinking:

Carbon wheels paired with the Assegais and no inserts. My thinking is carbon handles rock strikes better and Ibis’ wheel warranty is pretty good.

Aluminum wheels paired with the rekons and cushcore. Even though the cushcore is going to make my “light weight” setup heavier, aluminum doesn’t handle rim strikes as well and since these wheels are second hand, they don’t have a warranty so I want to do what I can to keep them in good condition

What would y’all do? Think I should switch anything up?

My time to ask for help.  On my fairly new gravel grinder (only about 1000 miles) with GRX, I have a clicking sound (does not sound like a loose BB) but only when I apply high torque to the pedals.  The gear doesn't seem to matter.  It's a double click with every revolution.  This means I think it's going to be hard for me to reproduce on the stand.  I would normally have thought it has to be a stiff link except for the correlation to revolution.  Maybe it is a BB creak and it just sounds different to me?

    Pressfit or threaded BB?

So im at the infuriating point, the new freehub got here quickly. Fit and bolted on no problems, runs very smooth. Then replaced axles and cones and found out the cup sits further laterally and so wheel rubbed the left side of frame. I figure I'll just move spacers around and no big deal. Unfortunately the cone nut is too wide to make the correction. So now I'm trying to find a narrower cone nut! Which is sold out everywhere. I will probably head to the lbs and see if the have any in the random bolts bin? I'd have my friend buy a new wheel but that is Also a challenge to find in old school QR. So if anyone has a 29" 135 QR wheel collecting dust in the garage let me know.

I may have some spare cones laying around if the LBS is a no go.  Let me know the width you need and I can go and measure.

I also have a spare 700c QR hub wheel laying around. The rim might be too narrow for a MTB but it’s something.

  10. Not that I was ever skeptical about the strength of carbon rims but a recent experience really showed me the abuse they can take.

About a month ago a guy drop off a 2016 Pivot with carbon rims for a tuneup. During my inspection, I noticed that the spokes were really loose. “Really loose” is probably an understatement. Every single spoke was reading a big fat 0 on my tension meter. I ended up having to undo all of the spokes, re-tension, re-dish, and re-true both wheels. Even after being ridden with no tension for god knows how many miles, the rims were spinning perfectly true after being rehabilitated. No way aluminum rims would be in such good shape after such abuse.

Getting off work tomorrow early, anyone up for a afternoon ride?  I can’t promise speed with the amount of riding I have been doing but I am ok on the technical stuff . I could start between 1:30-3pm

I was planning on riding at 3pm today. Happy to spin with you.

$275.  The quote to ship the wheel back to Canada was $150.  Now the cost is $425.  Unless of course I cut the spokes off the existing hub and send to Canada.

Replacement Enve or Revel rims are $600 plus build, am I better going this route?

Sounds like I should just cut my losses, get the replacement.

Why would you cut the spokes off? You can unscrew the spoke nipples using a spoke wrench.

I have a redneck buddy that likes to throttle his diesel and blanket black smoke on Roadies... I call him out for being an assshole but he finds it Amusing and just chuckles to himself

5 years ago I was on a road ride with a few buddies and a lifted diesel pickup decided to drop a black cloud on us as he passed by. As luck would have it, he hit a red light 100 yard up and we caught up to him. My friend was furious and immediately dismounted and got right up to the guys window yelling every expletive imaginable. Dude looked straight ahead and refused to make eye contact. Lol. All hat and no cattle.

With Brushy you never know what you're going to get from the hikers and bikes some great people but a fair number for dbags. Maybe it's the proximity to metro areas.

I can't recall a single negative interaction on 1/4N or DD with fellow riders or hikers. Where I have had many bad interactions are on the easier trails like Picnic or Rim. From the guy with his headphones blasting so loud I can here it, to the dude who just won't get out of the way even though he clearly looked back and saw you. I only go full STRAVA® mode on 1/4N and DD and really just use the easier trails as a means to get somewhere else as there is way too much unpredictability.
