  1. I might be wrong in always assuming an internet poster's intentions are good. But I assumed Schrute was just being funny and not attacking Bartman. I assumed that Bartman would be pleased by the imitation since it is "the sincerest form of flattery."   Bartman's response, to me, was a "I see what you did there" acknowledgement.

But...whatever. If this is biggest controversy we've had (yawn) we're doing alright.

I have found the ability of trails at be ridden soon after rain to be trail system to system and not really region to region.

I think this is true. Folks will say that Walnut and Brushy Creek are not good to go, but the SATN will be, for example. I feel we south Austin people are lucky in that regard.

  3. Did the thread that Bartman was on just get closed, or did Bartman get banned?

I appreciate the need for moderating, and the desire to keep things civil here, but I have always taken his remarks as tongue in cheek (which cheeks is ambiguously unclear!:classic_wink:).  I think his postings add color to the site. So I hope he was not banned. If people don't want to mess with him, they won't. Those that enjoy it, do.

    My two cents.

  4. Asshole and Clueless are two different characters. A smile on a mud caked rider could mean, "wow, that was fun" not, "I know I'm wrecking the trail."

So I would start a conversation with, "Do you know we are not suppose to ride the trails when muddy because it ruts them up and and causes them to erode more rapidly?"

If the guy says something, "yes, but it's so fun" THEN I would light into him with, "Well then you're just an asshole, aren't you?"

  5. The area is "meh" in regards to the riding. A lot of it is just gravel grinding. BUT, the scenery more than makes up for that fact, so it is indeed a great location. Maybe my perception of the area is skewed, to the positive, by how much fun I had at the two Desert Fests I went to. But I think it would be worth the drive for anyone.

  6. I carry a couple of paper towels. These could sub for TP, but I've never had to. But I have used the paper towels more than once to stop bleeding.

I also carry a square of mesh that I got from a tent. I use it when the gnats get so thick I can't breath without inhaling them.  It has little hooks on it. Think surgical mask, but easier to breath through.

  7. Another advantage showed up yesterday. I had the seat dropped to go down something. Then an unanticipated drop happened. If I had not been low to attempt the thing that I saw I would have for sure gone flying when that surprise came.

I had a friend almost plead with me once to get a dropper. "It'll save your life!!"  I believe him now.

Ain't you got no baling wire in yo' house? Worked for me for about four months until I finally broke down and got un-ghetto and bought some replacements.

Can someone clarify for me- where are horses allowed in the area? I know Slaughter Creek Nature Preserve is horse-friendly, but what about Circle C Metro and the other stuff along Slaughter Creek?

Pretty definitive answer to at least part of your question. This is at the entrance to Circle C Metro park. The park goes all the way east to Mopac. So if you see the girl on the horse I think it would be very acceptable to say, "Do you know horses aren't allowed in this park? There's a sign over there that says that."  I would assume that rule applies to the Veloway trails east of Mopac too.

  10. I was going to respond in the New Yeti thread about where to demo one. "Desert Fest usually has some demos out there. Oh, oops! Never mind." But I'm trying to not be a smart ass, so I didn't.

But that did get me thinking about what some of our post ride talk has been lately. Are we going to do anything to substitute for that adventure? I only went the last two years, but it was enough to spoil me on a group mountain biking get away. Ride, drink beer, eat something good. Get up the next day and repeat. Good stuff.

I still have my RV space reserved at Maverick. So I suppose that's an option.

Anyone been thinking of any thing? It could be just like trail work; it doesn't have to be "sponsored" by some entity for it to get done.

This is the argument people always bring up against droppers that I find just plain wrong. Somehow you are more skilled if you don't use a dropper? I call bullshit.

I was going to say something like this. I wouldn't call "bullshit" though because I'm a non-confrontational sort. :classic_wink:

But I too just can't follow that logic. I have a sling shot and a rifle. Practicing the sling shot does not make me a better rifleman.

  12. We've had this discussion before, but I'll say it again. A dropper makes riding easier. A dropper allows you to do things you can't without it.

This same thing can be said about gears, 29" tires, disc brakes, suspension, fat tires, carbon, tubeless tires, and every other bike building innovation that has come along. Of course you can ride without any of these things if you chose to.

A guy will say, "I don't need a dropper to ride (fill in the blank where there are 4' drops etc). But that same rider will balk maybe at the 6' drop. If he had a dropper he might attempt that 6' drop.

  13. Getting to Mary Moore Searight; There is a housing development between Slaughter Creek Drive and Bilbrook. Formerly the way to get from Slaughter Creek Drive to Bilbrook was to ride up onto the water retention pond's berm and follow that all the way around until it hit the sidewalk behind the houses. Then the sidewalk between the houses, then sidewalk in front of houses, past the swinging gate thing that is always closed, onto to Bilbrook.

There is a better alternate, LESS OBTRUSIVE TO THE HOMEOWNERS, way now. When riding across the field from Slaughter Creek Drive, don't go up onto the berm, stay below it at it's base, out of sight (sort of) of the houses on the other side of the pond. Just as the berm is turning to the left, look to your right. There is an opening in the tree line. That single track through the forest will take you to Bilbrook. All out of sight of the houses.

Don't pay attention to noobs. Fuck those guys.

I specifically said, "not at the poster" so please don't be offended. I have been on for less than five years so I feel like a noob myself.  I was thinking of the join dates for some of these other guys, 2003 etc.

Sorry Riding Again, I don't know why you were mentioning me in your post.

  15. My thoughts are since the admins there never check in or do anything, they aren't going to take it down.  I assume the forum will be there in perpetuity. So if we ever need to reference something we will always be able to go look it up there. There might be 231 pages of Korean to get past, but it will be there. I personally like the, "You might be a trail builder..." thread for example. I might go and find it at some point.

But this is much better. Administered by a fellow MBer, and specifically for Austin folks.

I laughed thinking about (not at) the one poster there that was all nostalgic for Mojo. He has been a member for all of 13 months now. If some of you long time Mojo-ers can see the benefits of this move, then why can't everyone. It's not like we are going to hurt the feelings of our good friends that run it, right?

  16. I'm on a forum that has multiple "like" buttons.

Like, Love, Agree, Wow!, Funny, and Informative

The little bar below the person's post will list it that way, "2 likes, 4 agrees, 1 funny" etc.  It is helpful because it more accurately reflexes how you feel about a post. I frequently don't want to just "Like" something here, because I don't "like" what the post is telling us, that a certain area is being shut down by the BCP for example, but I want to acknowledge the poster for posting that information.

Maybe we could have a "That's dumb" button in addition!
