    I'm curious what it means that the 520+ has Trailforks. The new 530 has very nice Trailforks integration and loads map data automatically. It can tell you which way to turn if there is a fork in the trail, if it senses that you've paused. I don't think the 520+ can do that but I'd love to hear if it does. So, the 530 is supposed to make off road navigation much, much more feasible with the unit than before.

    The mobile app also marks the last location where it had connectivity to your Garmin so that you can go find it if you lose it. This seems like a no-brainer and I'm not sure why they didn't have that before and why they wouldn't add that as a feature of the app for older BLE connected devices...

    I do get lazy since it syncs directly after save to my phone and uploads.  I tend to forget to charge it sometimes.

    I use mine like you use yours. Go, Stop.

    If you want to move around the map on a 520, just don't, because you'll wonder why the hell it isn't any easier. It could certainly be much easier (a joy stick or touch screen) but I just set the map to a zoom level that seems to work pretty well in most events and then resort to my phone if I really want to investigate my location.

  3. To echo and add:

    1) I think you'll find off-road navigation with a 520 to be unsatisfying. You'll end up with your phone in hand, able then to zoom, scroll, load up trails on Trailforks, etc. Just go get lost a few more times and you'll learn the trails.

    2) Another safety feature of the 520 is the ability to allow someone to track your ride through Garmin Connect. I send my wife a beacon so she can see where I've been in case I stop moving and become unresponsive. You can also do this with Strava Beacon but you have to have the paid subscription.

    3) My phone is really old and started to freak out and reboot once in a while, seemingly always during a ride, screwing up my ride tracking when I used it for Strava. I have a 520 and I do like decoupling my ride recording and phone.

    4) If you do any road routes at all, don't underestimate the 520 for it's routing feature. You can download a very detailed local base map then load routes that you've created in something like RideWithGPS and it will accurately do turn by turn routing for you. I use it when trying to find my way through new neighborhoods on longer rides.     Yep I get it - try before you buy (build). Others offered that same opinion early on in the thread and perhaps good advice that is worth repeating for some folks. Heck I went out and bought a bike specifically for gravity-oriented stuff back in Feb and have yet to ride it anywhere besides Brushy. Still excited to get it out on some steep downs though, which is not something I'd care to do on my short-travel 29er.

  6. Anyone have trouble getting bacon strips to stick when the hole is wet with sealant? What is the best technique for loading your strip onto the tool and then pushing it in, twisting etc? I have great luck when I plug a tire that I've allowed to dry at the puncture site but not so great when I try to plug a hole that is wet and that has pressure in the tire. 

  7. UST tires originally had a heavy layer of extra rubber to make them air tight without the need for any liquid sealants. They were heavier than an equivalent version that wasn't UST. My understanding is that "tubeless ready"/TR tires are less porous but assume that sealant will be used. A compromise between UST and a tire intended for use with a tube.

  8. That sucks but I have to wonder if it is actually a smart strategy to 1) not leave much/anything of value (your borrowed item, notwithstanding) and then 2) leave it unlocked so that they don't have to smash a window to see that the car is devoid of anything of value?

    This, of course, is sensible to me with my 20 year old Ford. Not sure I'd do it if I had a newer car.

    latest ones should not have the sticky issue. I think it took mine at least a year. Hot day with sun shining right on them, they seem to not return, or stick a little, after being squeezed... first signs. I haven't heard of the issue in recent product.

I actually have a set that I swapped out for Maguras two years ago and started researching recently to see what the deal with them was, whether SRAM was covering them, if there was a fix, etc. Came across that (or a similar) video. The guy that posted a video will fix them for a reasonable fee. I wondered if a kit containing the internals would be a good option as well and seeing @circuitbreaker post, I'd lean that direction prolly.

    They felt great until this issue. Best brakes I'd ridden even if XTs are so reliable.
