They are too expensive for too many miles on the used market.

I was looking for a manual transmission element for a long time.  The only ones I could find that were reasonable turned out to have salvage titles.  They are practical little boxes that just work.

for singlespeeding, I am under the impression that some, but not all chainrings will work without a tensioner. I have used AB rings with no problems on SS, but I emailed Garbaruk about their SS rings and they said I would have to use a tensioner with their rings. weird.

I think a well-designed oval ring should cause the chain to "lengthen" and "shorten" and would appear to move up and down when pedaling, but if is made right, the actual tension in the system should not change significantly.

I run an Absolute Black oval on my SS without a tensioner.  My mind said it wouldn't work but the design of the oval ring is such that the tension never changes.  It's a trip.

3. try a few on in a store to find out what works for your melon.

When doing this, and we all do, make sure to buy something at the store. The store fronted the money to bring that product to you and they are taking the risk that you’ll try it on for free and then save $10 buying it online. Unless they are gouging the shit out of the price, I’ll usually buy it from the local store.

4. If you want to get better, ride with people that are better than you.  Watch how they attack lines.  Watch when they stand up and when they hammer.  You'll get faster and more confident as you ride more.

Thumper is not any more difficult than any other trail but it takes commitment.  There are so many other trails within 30 minutes of your place (close to Walnut) that will test your skills.  Go ride Brushy Creek and explore all the different terrain there.  If you're having trouble with ledges and technical stuff, go out to City Park (Emma Long Motorcyle Park) and ride that (not alone).  Just take your time, always have fun, and keep riding.

This is true, only noticed them when I was stopped and then they swarmed to me.

What about the phenomena of getting them caught up in your slipstream?  I was told by my brother-in-law that when he rode motorcycles, he could pull up behind a semi on the highway and put the bike in neutral and just get 'pulled along'.  Sounded like a good way to die but made sense when you look at how the air comes off the back of a truck.

My first EB was on a 29er SS with 2.4" Nevegals.

My last EB was with a 29er SS with 3" DHRs.  Road sections were a PITA and my gear was too high for the flats and too low for the hills.  Lots of walking up hills but it was still a good time on the bike.

this is definitely the top reason that I spend as little time as possible on the Gulf Coast. that and ... everything else. a friend of mine lived there for a few years and found an apartment close to her job. got clipped by a car on her bike on her first day while riding to work and the driver just left her there. that's Houston in a nutshell for me.

A real Houston driver would have probably backed up and made sure to destroy her bike before speeding off.  Must have been a transplant driver.

I don't think I've seen a less bike friendly big city.

8. Thanks for the race report, AntonioGG and the info on road surface conditions.  Mr. June Bug is retiring today, and we'll have time now to go exploring and riding during the week.  This area hasn't been on my radar until now.
I was curious about the Camino Real aspect of the race name, since I have a passing interest in the actual Camino Real route.  I checked in with a friend who rode in the event and he confirmed that there is an historical component to the general area of the race route, so extra interesting.

Congrats to the family! I’m only mentally retired.

9. Last year, Hammertime  Fishing Guides would shuttle you to the island for $75/person with a minimum of two people.  Round-trip price?

Once you run out of water, the price jumps to $150 to get back.

This is speculation of course ;)

10. Does anyone know what all the green ribbons on the trees in the new loop area are for? Tree's marked for removal perhaps?

What happened is, someone caught a leprechaun over there. Probably AJ. He didn’t have a red scarf so he used green ribbon.

Here’s the story http:// https://www.discoveringireland.com/leprechauns/ for reference with a few details tweaked.

In one tale, a mountain biker captures a Leprechaun and forces him to hand over his gold. The Leprechaun says that the gold is hidden beneath a tree in the woods and shows him which one it is. The farmer ties his red scarf around the tree and after making the Leprechaun promise not to remove the scarf he heads to his farm to get a shovel. But when the farmer returns he finds that the Leprechaun has tied a red scarf around every tree in the woods.

11. If you like jumps, you can easily spend 2 hours at Coler preserve and all the trails are right in one spot.  I'd also check out Springdale.  There is a lot of trail there and it's super fun.  The biggest thing you should be thinking about is what you're going to do when you're late to your next stop.

12. It is almost 10 years old [emoji1]
It's not much of a loss though...it was one of those 'silly' things we did in the beginning.

That ‘silly’ thing has provided more than a few smiles and, at least perceived, airtime. It has served well.

13. i've been taking my road bike to galveston. its much more entertaining to ride up and down the highway and enjoy the scenery. i will also ride it for fun on the beach. but not too much because of the drivetrain thing. the sand at galveston is pretty hard packed, so it actually rides quite well.
if you are going, just take your bike. its fun to ride either way, but don't think i'd try to do 20 miles on the beach or anything.
if you have a backup bike, that would be preferred.

I took my DJ cruiser and rode from the San Luis pass down to the ship channel and back. Was around 50 miles I think for the whole island ride. The goal was to spend as much time riding by the water as possible and I was pretty successful. The key is making sure you watch the wind conditions. Packed sand is fun to ride on but the thick/loose stuff is no bueno.

14. This is what happens when everyone around the table is a "yes" man/woman.  I would say that we are not the target audience but several things throw me.

1. English voice-over by someone who obviously speaks good english = English speaking customers
2. Copy that is NOT from someone with English as their native language = Foreign owned company
3. Young-ish model = 20-40 demographic
4. City riding PLUS off-road and beach = City dweller looking for adventure

I'd say that the members of this forum probably fit into that demographic at least just a little bit.  I'd also wager that this advertising would have every single one of us asking for our 2 minutes back.  Let's hope it's a parody.

15. One cool thing about the beach is that it’s easy to build little jumps and there aren’t any rocks to hit when you bust your ass. However, the beach is sand and salt and water. You have to really clean your bike when you’re done but it’s just a bike and it’s no good if you don’t ride it.

16. I had a bear bell that is basically a bell dangling from your bars like Santa Claus. It gets very annoying when you’re just cruising around and there is no reason to be making noise.

I use my bell for blind corners and to let people know I’m there if things are hectic. I much prefer to say “excuse me” or something if they are aware. People with headphones can usually hear the bell but I’ve had to throw juniper berries at one numb nut on SATN one time just to get his attention.

17. Feisty Blonde from HopFusion. Upon first sip of this stuff I was really impressed, but there's something about it that just keeps me from wanting a second one, possibly the honey flavor. A friend of mine couldn't get enough though; so I suppose to each their own. I must say 8.27% for a Blonde is impressive, but I'm going to pass on picking this one up again. Might be worth at least trying it if you like a lighter beer but with some kick.

This matches my impression of this beer perfectly. I thought it would taste stronger with the kick but it just didn’t do it for me.

18. I taught myself how to unicycle a few years ago. It was a surreal experience and took about 8 solid hours (spread over many weeks). You have to train your mind and for me it was “nope, nope, nope....boom! Got it!”

It does help with wheelies. Imagine always having to find that balance spot or you’re crashing.

You want to really get pissed off? Get one for your kids and watch how fast they get it. I had 5 in the garage at one time including a 6’ tall giraffe model.

19. the most dangerous thing we deal with are sheep and cattle and deer.  Those things are idiots!

You realize the sheep, cattle, and deer are on their own forum talking about the idiots that ride by in funny clothes while never actually getting anywhere? You know they’re at least thinking it!
