This reminds me of a concept I talk about almost every time I go to Spider. The Enduro-brero. It's like a sombrero, only for Enduro!  Something to give you shade while you are in line or on the lift, but then still allows you to shred the gnar...

You could pretty easily stash a small umbrella in your pack for the lift. You could call it the "Enduro my Umbrella-ella-ella"

  2. I didn't know where the police got their bikes before, and I didn't care. I don't care where they will get them in the future.

I didn't shop at MJ's before, and I still won't. (It's a bad location for me, I have personal relationships with other shops, etc.)

If they were smart, IMHO, they would have used this to pander to both sides. "We are proud to support the APD with the least aggressive, zero emission form of transportation available."

it's there so I can grab it and dig out the grime that gets stuck between my chainstay and my tire, which has a gap of about 3mm.  it does not do anything in that spot, that was just the tidiest place to store it. it's also a good "conversation starter."

I've tried different tire sizes and stuff and this is the smallest tire I can stand on the terrain and also the largest tire that can possibly fit.

I have to say that I'm a little disappointed. I bet you can find a mounting spot that actively brushes off caked up mud.

That brings up a good question: When riding through fire and hot coals are you guys weighting your front wheel or back wheel? I just don't feel like I am getting traction cornering through a burning forest.

    That is the burning question.

  5. We stay here: https://www.vrbo.com/390574?_branch_match_id=764187379070433996&adultsCount=1&oc=6uCTo2fTRSbBVj6gE~tmN&utm_campaign=earned%3Avrbo%3Ashare%3AXXX%3AUS%3Aios&utm_content=390574&utm_medium=social&utm_source=direct

I think it's more than what you need, but great for a family or a bunch of dudes with bikes. 217 acres to ourselves. The house is a doublewide, but it's clean. The kids loved exploring the property, but we had cooler weather than you'd get in the summer.

For the hikes, my wife downloaded an app that ranked the hikes in the area by distance and difficulty, which is nice because you can throw the State Park in the mix too. Sorry, I don't know what it was called, but the park's website is pretty good.

    https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/day_hikes.htm

And here's the "scenic drive" page, although they are all scenic drives out there.

    https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/scenic_drives.htm

We did Chisos Basin Loop Trail (plus the very short Window View Trail) and Balancing Rock one day with a picnic lunch in between. That was perfect for us. Bit off a little too much the next day with Crystal trail in the State Park so I had to piggyback one kid for a few miles. Although it was about the same total distance as the day before, those A/C breaks really seem to help. Then, we did Santa Elena Canyon Trail in the NP in the morning before going home. We all wished that we were staying longer.

  6. The family and I spent a few days in Terlingua during Spring Break. With a 6 and a 9 y/o, we were looking for the kid friendly hikes in the National Park. There are some good ones were you hike for an hour or so, see some cool shit, get in your air conditioned car, and cool off while taking a breathtaking drive to a different part of the park. This strategy worked well managing kids meltdowns but also could be a good game plan to manage the heat.

I had a close friend get it, he's 55 average health and he had fever for 2 days, a cough for over a week and that was it.  His wife never caught it.  However, his parents live with them and they are both 84 yr old.  His mom had a similar reaction to him, but his dad had a pretty tough case.  He spent 2-3 days in the hospital (at 2 different hospitals).  They went in first and the 1st location mis-diagnosed it and told them to go home.  24hr later that are at a different hospital being admitted and getting top-shelf care.  He said the differences were dramatic.

But the main reason I bring this up is that my buddy is a believer in the different affect blood types have with handling the disease.  Both he and his mom are bot 0 types.  His dad is A type.

Just for another personal data point.  Another friend of mine has 3 kids: 11, 9, 7 yr old.  The oldest 2 are boys and both picked up the Covid.  At the time my friend had his brother in law family over from houston and they were all in a relatively small house.  They did their best to be conscientious, and the 2 boys were the only 2 to get it.  The entire family was pretty shocked by this.  Both he and his wife (along with the BIL family) ended up taking Covid tests for work and all came back negative.

Now I'm in no way saying this isn't contagious, in fact, I kinda thinks its pretty darn contagious from the stuff I've read.  But I do find these did bids interesting little points to how it has or has not spread.

    Later,
    CJB

It's definitely interesting how it affects people so differently. We have to remember that this thing is only months old, and we really don't understand it yet. That's why we shouldn't scoff at the scientists and disease experts when they can't clearly explain something or some of the details aren't 100% accurate. The anti-mask conspiracy theorists want to throw the baby out with the bathwater if one data point doesn't make sense to them, but these scientists are the best we have, doing the best they can.

I doubt it. I read a quote from Gohmert where he basically blamed the mask for giving him covid.

"I can't help but wonder if by keeping a mask on and keeping it in place, that if I might have put some germs or some of the virus onto the mask and breathed it in,"

I realize this is in the MTB discussion forum, but just can't resist. In these trying times, people like this really come out of the wood work. Just a reminder that SOMEONE YOU MAY KNOW (or know OF) thinks just like this:

Dated an interesting woman once, that would probably hunt this guy down and shove a stuffed-toy penguin down his throat for disparaging penguins like this.

I like when he backs up his penguin conspiracy theory with flat earth truth.

I would worry about my ability to leapfrog the bars when going over the front. Not saying I do that a lot but the 2 times I have (clipless even) I was impressed by my own agility and it saved me from certain doom. I wouldn't want to catch a foot on my bikes fanny pack and eat shit.

I'm not just here to humblebrag about my OTB ninja skills though. I agree with wanting quick access to the phone. I've been thinking about how I can create some kind of pouch/pocket to add to a hydration pack shoulder strap. Something just big enough to slip the phone in and maybe even have a camera hole for some super shaky video. I was thinking mesh material with a little drawstring or elastic closure. I keep meaning to prototype something up but I have a day job and I don't have the right materials 😞

I wanted a phone pocket to attach to my hydration pack like that for years. For a while, I had a CamelBak that had some really nice hip pockets that I liked a lot. Currently, I switched to a fanny pack style hydration pack. It's not super easy to swing it around and access my phone compared to a handlebar bag or something on the frame, but way easier than a backpack style. Plus, I love not having anything on my shoulders.

What do you want to carry, and where, specifically? Under the bar, in front, in the middle next to the stem? Bikepacking.com has quite exhaustive lists of such things.

  12. Question for your drop bar bikes: how does the seated reach to the hoods on your bike compare to the seated reach (saddle to hands) to the grips on your flat bar mountain bike?

I never seem to feel satisfied with the fit on my CX bike. I took some measurements on my two bikes and the reach to the hoods on the drop bar is several inches longer. I could get the reach closer within reason, but I am not sure if it's wise to use a short, short stem on this CX bike without compromising handling.

My drops are 2-3 inches longer than my MTB. (I didn’t know where on the hood to measure to.) I have a 60mm stem and wider bars than came on it. I immediately liked it better when I made that swap. I have often wondered if i would be happier on the next size down.

portable mortuaries coming to Texas: "The Federal Emergency Management Agency is sending 14 refrigerated trucks to the state next week — on top of the eight already sent — to serve as temporary mortuaries, while some funeral homes are reserving their own trucks from private companies."

supposedly, shortly before Heaven's Gate members took their own lives, they bought a $3,600 telescope to see the spaceship that was coming to take them away. they promptly returned the telescope and demanded a refund (like they needed the money) because it was defective. the "defect" was that no matter how carefully they trained it on the Hale-Bopp comet, the telescope could not see the spaceship that they knew was following it. stupid telescope!

cognitive dissonance can be quite strong with people who are highly motivated to pursue an ignorant path.

So, what you're saying is that I should return this mask I bought because I can't see it stopping the COVID.

She just needs a swift kick to the uterus to fix her medical condition. And did I get that right that her Chiro is treating her Gyno issues, which make mask wearing a threat to her health. Must be the latest healthcare trend, where now you just to go a Gyro to get a pap smear and your neck cracked at the same time.

    "...and they don't work anyway."

She must have picked up this piece of infectious disease science from her accountant.

Thanks for that @AntonioGG! No, I haven't tried SportsLegs, but 4.6/5 stars on Amazon with 950 ratings? Added to cart + delivered on Friday = I'll be trying them on Saturday. Since there are no electrolytes, it looks like it needs to be combined with SaltStick Caps. And hot weather or not, I often don't ride very hard because I don't want to stress my legs and end up sore. So maybe this will help with that as well.

When I'm on a bike trip and know I'm riding as much as possible multiple days in a row, I like to pop a handful of SportLegs post ride and before bed. Usually there are about 20 beers in between those doses, so the later one is often forgotten.
