  1. French drains have been tried before on Deception and they always clog. The place we need them is in the bottom of berms so they get clogged quickly and if the inlet got broken they could cause a rider to wreck. I would love to be able to use them, but for now, we just keep adjusting the trail as problems arise.
  2. It's wet out there. While working on Peddlers Pass today...guess what...here comes two riders. They were clearly newbies, but still, the BCRT is flooded, use some common sense. The water in the 1st pic is over a foot deep. FirstBlood fixed the drainage so now it's only a few inches deep. We did alot of work to fix drainage problems today, but it's so wet there is nowhere for the water to go. A section of the trail still had flowing water on it.
  3. As one of the builders at Brushy Creek, I have to respectfully disagree. I have to fix the damage caused by people riding muddy trails, it far exceeds the damage caused by riding dry trails. It's not even in the same ballpark. There is such a thin layer of dirt in Central Texas that we do everything we can to preserve it. The ruts caused by people riding muddy trails greatly increases the rate of erosion for many reasons and I don't have time to type them all out. But one example is the ruts allow water to pass through low diversion berms placed along the trail to control erosion. Ever noticed a low hump along the trail on a downslope or before a feature, those are there to stop water eroding the trail below it by slowing and directing it away from the trail below. Ruts blow these out and allow water to pass through. When it's dry people just roll right over them without a problem. That's just one of the erosion features put in by trail builders to preserve the trail for everyone. I could start talking about reverse grade break rollers, or the different kinds of bench cuts, or where to in-slope or out-slope the trail etc. etc. etc. I also haven't touched on how riding muddy trails screws up features such as berms, jumps, and rollers that we have to re-sculpt after someone decides their one single ride is more important than all the riders that use the trail after them and all the work the builders have put into the trail. And a quick side note, these people that are seen "just checking the trail to see if it's muddy" have bikes that are usually caked in mud which doesn't happen in one muddy turn or low spot, It's from them riding the whole trail, not caring it's muddy, and coming up with an excuse when they are busted. The picture below is from a berm on Peddlers Pass at Brushy Creek taken a few weeks ago, it's ruts caused by just 2 riders not caring it muddy and the damage they are causing. Now, multiply that by 73 (the number of berms on just Peddlers Pass) and you will start to understand why people get upset when they see people riding muddy trails....rant done.
  4. I call BS on them "checking" the trail. I've had a few people say the same thing to me when I ask them not to ride muddy trails. It always seems like they are quickly coming up with an excuse for something they know they shouldn't have done. Anyone that is going to take the time to check on the trail is most likely more than a beginner and would know it's not ridable with the amount of rain we have had. Also, if you think the trail is muddy why would you ride your bike on it, just walk in and check it out.
  5. Peddlers is still too wet to ride.
  6. Going Building on Peddlers at 11:30am. I will be working West of Parmer, close to the start of that side.
  7. Stop riding Muddy trails. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I have to vent. Every single turn and berm on Peddlers has deep ruts from some asshole riding. I just don't get it, it's not even fun when it's muddy, The pictures are from this morning.
  8. I went to go check the trails and they are far to wet to ride. Peddlers is so wet it would need until at least Wednesday afternoon to dry out...but guess what...80% chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday. On the bright side, the longer it's wet, the more new berms and features will have magically appeared when it's dry enough to ride.
  9. rained a lot today. Checked out the trail and even if it doesn't rain again (which it will this Saturday) late Monday or Tuesday would be the 1st time it will be dry enough. Any rain and it will be Wednesday or Thursday.
  10. Today's second heavy round of rain is passing over the trails now. 😞
  11. Anyone have a chance to ride the new berms on Peddlers Pass. Feedback?
  12. I've been out of town for a week, how bad are the ruts on Peddlers Pass? Am I going to be pissed?
  13. Brushy was unrideable yesterday and it got a lot of rain last night.
  14. TRAIL KARMA IS ALVIE.... I was building today when along comes a guy slipping and sliding on every turn. I called out to him, but he ignored me. Then wham, a big stick or rock got stuck in his derailleur and snapped it clean off...ha ha. I still walked over to him and told him not to ride wet trails.
  15. Heres my PSA to the kid I'm one of the Brushy Creek Trail Stewards. Please don't ride wet trails. It causes ruts that damage the trail and we have to spend our precious volunteer hours fixing the ruts instead of making the trails more fun. With so little topsoil in Central Texas we do everything we can to preserve it, please help us out and wait at least 2 days to ride after it rains. However, with the amount of rain we've had over the last two weeks and the lower temperatures the trails will take several days to dry out once the rain has stopped. A good indicator if the trail is to wet is if mud is "caking" on your tire.
  16. The ground is waterlogged, riding will cause deep ruts, which a few people have so graciously demonstrated. Another shower just rolled through. On the bright side, the ground is perfect for building. When it drys up there will be a few new surprises for everyone.
  17. Just saw n his strava profile he's a kid
  18. I found the one that rode last night. I'll be leaving him a nice message. Dam it, just saw it a kid, can't use any bad language in my comment.
  19. So as you could imagine Brushy is still way too wet to ride and as predicted there have been a select few assholes that have still been riding. While building on Peddlers Pass last night I saw only one set of tire marks that had caused ruts. I went to finish off the work at lunchtime and there were four more sets of tire tracks. They caused nice deep ruts. Whoever you are, your an asshole. Instead of spending my time making the trail more fun, I had to fix all the ruts you caused. In the future please try to be an adult and have some self-control.
  20. I'm going building on Peddlers Pass today, anyone want to join me? I'm available any time.
