  1. I would call them just to probe them for more info. If they will actually tell you, you really want to know if it is a materials or a assembly issue. If it was an assembly issue and not a problem with a batch of spokes or nipples, then they can be easily trued up locally. If the answer is they got a bad batch of parts, then you want to send them off. If not for you, for future resale.
  2. Hot! but not our color scheme! We have a black/blue/yellow frame. Going with black and blue bits. Well and a gold chain (baller).
  3. Maybe not a people issue and maybe just a bad tensiometer or something. Wheels going out under tension are going to cause problems too. i9 doesn't seem to use any kind of spoke prep and may not use any nipple lubricant, which could cause mass problems as well. Nipples not turning smoothly will cause spoke twist that wouldn't come out without good detensioning/flex. That said, a new builder, rushing builds and throwing too much tension into a wheel too quick without detensioning, is going to certainly lead to problems. Even perhaps a batch of problems.
  4. Strong maybe, I think I need a little longer. Let me throw my stem on when the bike is built and see how he fits. Looking at cassettes. XT 10spd shifter/rear D. There is a nice XT 11-36 with a One Up 40T range extender and 16t conversion on PinkBike for $50, or for $50 I can just get him a new SunRace 11-40T. Lightly used XT vs new Chinesium. Going to skip the full chinesium Boloney and other Aliexpress trash. What say you - new Sunrace or used moded XT???
  5. Finishing the kid bike build parts ordering. Before I order stuff need the following: old school straight steer tube 1 1/8th headset. So classic 34mm, external cups. Any color. Could actually do with just a bottom cup set. 60-70mm 0-10* rise stem, 31.8. 10spd cassette (Any and can trade for 9spd xt/xtr cassettes)
  6. Honestly, I am willing to bet the alloy wheels just were not built well enough and pretensioned enough before riding. It's not as much of an issue with a carbon hoop, but with an alloy rim, you HAVE to tension and detension correctly during the build up. I'm happy to look at your rear wheel and see how it looks with regards to tensioning.
  7. For cranks I've heard good things about the SR Suntour Zeron in 30t, but am also thinking about the SR xct jr which is a 104/64bcd square taper crank. Price ends up being the same -$75 for both by the time I buy a 30t 104bcd ring and bb for the Xct. So what are the chances I'll only ever need a single ring crank, vs having the option of running 2x with the Xct... The xct would let me also put a bashguard on as well which seems useful with the lower clearance of a 24" bike. Collective wisdom???
  8. I think 26" is basically a kid or small person part these days. I certainly have a pile of 26" stuff laying around too.
  9. I'll start him on a 30x34t setup. If he still needs to spin more then we can consider buying a cassette.
  10. I've got a box of normal range XT/XTR cassettes (34t), but was wondering if I should try one of the large range Microshift cassettes, up to say a 42T. Any idea how well do they work with Shimano or SRAM shifters, and a medium cage rear D?
  11. I snagged a cheap "Mongoose" 24x3" tire off Amazon and he is running it on the front now. actual measure on a narrow rim is about 2.75" But it is plump and makes up for the crappy fork on the Kona now. For the GT build, thinking a nice 2.3-2.5 tire would be great. If anyone has any of the crappy stock 24x1.95 tires these bikes come with, let me know. I am the bike guy for our neighborhood and have a few kids in need of new rear tires (too many skid stops!).
  12. What are people doing for tires? I was looking at either the Bontrager XR1 24x2.25 or the Minion in 24x2.3. I like the Bonti price ($25) but I know the Maxxis will tubeless and last a long time. Also, looks like I can get some verison of the Maxxis for $33 on ebay.
  13. My son now owns more bikes than I do. Which is saying a lot. It started with a junker from Goodwill. He rode the snot out of it, so I got him a 20" Hotrock, which has been great, but the time came for something without a coaster brake. We got him an 18" haro bmx setup, which he enjoys at 9th street, but I don't see getting a lot of miles (fine at $100). He really enjoys mountain bike trails, so I snagged a Kona 24" bike which has been good, but when I started to map out upgrades to it, it just made sense to start fresh. So, early this week I won a GT Stomp 24" disc frame on ebay. Got wheelset parts coming (Dyad 25mm rims and Stans'Novatec hubs). Got a Fox 26" air fork to knock down. Got a 1x9 xt setup, just need cranks and brakes. Leaning towards BB7's, but if I can snag hydros I guess I will. Going to be a few weeks for parts to arrive, but hoping for a 25# bike when all is said and done. Wondering if there is any interest in a pay it forward kids thread for parts. Lots of the junk we have in our garage parts boxes is actually idea for kids (generic stems, 27.2 posts, 9spd bits)..
  14. Trails going to be good this afternoon? Mostly thinking Peddlers with my son.
  15. Helpful but all new style or rear shock spacers.
  16. Re-reading the old manual. It isn't ideal, but I think I can pull a pin out of the spring retainer and move it all down the shaft. There should already be holes drilled as well. Will pull it all apart tonight to see. I'm running a 3" tire on the front, so figure giving him 50-60mm of suspension travel and a 20 PSI fat tire, he should be more than good till we can raise it up.
  17. I guess once it is installed it doesn't move, so even a dab of hot glue would be enough to keep it in place. I'll check out my options at HD.
  18. Saturday my ride plans were hijacked by my Son demanding to join me. So much for hitting big trails and miles. Instead we loaded up and went to Walnut. He did his own personal longest ride at 6.15 miles. Lots of sitting around to rest. But he had a great time. He's done Peddlers, but I think he liked .6 and some of the WC trails more. Will go back on a week day afternoon with less dog and foot traffic. He is super timid on going down stuff, but he has no problem climbing and picking solid lines going uphill. It was also a great opportunity for him to work on gear changes, so a win all around. After a good ride I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the start of a legit wheelset for him - 24" Velocity Dyad rims on Sun Ringle disc hubs. Should shave a couple lbs and let us throw the 1x9 set up on the bike. Pic from peddlers last month.
  19. I posted in the sales forum, but am not getting the eyes. I am sure people have these sitting around the garage. ISO - ~60mm of the old Fox clip on volume spacers to reduce a Float R for my sons bike.
  20. Need to reduce an old Float R down to 60mm for the kid bike. Need 3x20mm. Old school on the shaft style, not the hang from the bottom of the valve new style.
  21. I've got carbon rims on my SS and love the stiffness and how much of a beating they take. Would do it again for sure.
  22. Yep, still building wheels. New job is super flexible and frees me up for pretty quick turn around on builds. Available anytime. mattlikesbikes at thegoooglemail
  23. Keeps not letting me log in. I'll pass on the 10spd stuff. Still just looking for 9spd bits.
