  1. I get your point, but soccer IMO is very boring. I think American Football incorporates many skills, combined with brute strength, sheer speed, and game strategy to produce a very entertaining sport.
  2. I have no problem spending a few hours watching a worthwhile sporting event. Time on the trails generally takes priority, but I spend quite a bit of time throughout the year watching sports, including basketball, baseball, football, golf, and tennis. Like to spend time watching good movies at home too. What I don't watch is reality TV and other crappy shit that pollutes the airwaves these days.
  3. I rode Snail, Picnic, and 1/4 Notch early yesterday before it got hot, and the rocks on 1/4 Notch were super slick. We must have got a little bit of rain Sat night / Sun morning. I actually like riding 1/4 Notch under slick conditions now and again, as it really forces you to apply a completely different riding style. I chose not to push my luck on DD though given those slick conditions - much less margin for error there. Given the high heat and humidity later in the day, I was glad I took my chances early. Those few muddy trouble spots unfortunately are getting bigger and bigger given that there has been no time to completely dry out. And by pure misfortune or act of the Trail Gods, they all seem to be right in front of limestone features that require some level of traction!
  4. Darn! Why'd you have to ruin it for everybody?

    Go Astros

Yeah those were borderline WPs though. The poor guy had already been emulating a back stop for much of the game. And then there was that blown throw-out at first by Cole. Seems even that fly ball off of the wall late was catchable, but Gonzales was probably gun shy after his first missed attempt. Overall just a game to forget for the 'Stros, but plenty of home cooking coming up.

Tough loss yesterday. Damn that Green Monster! In H-Town tomorrow though - hopefully to wrap things up in 5.
  7. Another Class of '76er here - bi-centennial! Concert scene for me was primarily Cleveland, OH.
  8. Does that mean that you listened to too much Midnight Rambler and Gimme Shelter in the seventies?
  9. Exactly, and while still a bummer, this irregular pattern has at least offered windows of opportunity. For me it has been a blessing to not be working during this time, which has at least afforded me the opportunity to sneak in 18 trail rides in Sep-Oct when conditions permitted. By the looks of things now though, I'll be lucky to break 20 by the end of this month. The good news is that we still have Nov-Apr to enjoy some great riding before the sweltering heat returns.
  10. Well at least I managed to mow and winterize my entire lawn this past weekend
  11. Especially if the Cowboys are playing on TV 😆
  12. I'll second that, especially on trails like Deception where so many sections of trail run closely together. I've been riding out there before and couldn't even tell where the music is coming from. I dropped out of a group ride once because somebody in the group assumed that everybody wanted to hear their head-banger mash-up. I have no problem with people using earbuds if they can do so without impacting others, although personally I'd much rather immerse myself in whatever sounds the trail and surroundings have to offer. Regarding muddy trails, I do think sometimes we have a tendency to be too judgmental. There are times when I come off the trail splattered in mud even though the trail overall was fine to ride. All it takes is one mud puddle or riding along a section of wet pavement to cover your bike and clothes with splatters. There is a big difference between looking muddy and having mud caked on your tires / drive train, but some casual observers will just see a little mud and cry foul. I'm not making excuses for people who are out there damaging trails - just saying sometimes you do need to give the benefit of doubt.
  13. It's located in Burnet and is generally only open Fri afternoon through Sun for trail riding. Ten dollars per rider at the gate covers the day-use fee with additional fees for overnight camping. Definitely worth checking out but they have a lot of different events out there too; so it's best to check their website and make sure the trails are open to the public. https://rprtexas.com/
  14. Good to hear that they are open this weekend. I saw that they had some sort of shooting event going on this weekend and figured they might be closed. You weren't having to dodge any bullets were you?
  15. Downright depressing! I don't recall ever seeing anything like this in the 12 years I've been here. I wasn't mountain biking in 2007 though; so maybe I just didn't notice. It does seem that in the time I've lived here the levels of humidity have shifted from being semi-arid to subtropical. That's coming from somebody who lived in Houston for 20 years prior though; so maybe it just seemed semi-arid to me initially.
  16. This is like the MTB equivalent of Roller Derby! Hilarious.
  17. Hell yeah! Wonder how much for that 50" carbon hoop?
  18. I think it's definitely still too wet at Brushy this morning. I'm going to try and ride somewhere this afternoon though - RPR, RHR, CP, ?????
  19. I checked a couple of spots and it is still way too wet to ride. Standing water in some areas. A full day of sunshine tomorrow will help, but then it's supposed to rain again on Saturday. Sadly I saw a couple of guys loading up muddy bikes at Brushy Creek Lake Park. They acknowledged that the trails were very messy, and I kindly informed them that they should not ride in those conditions.
  20. I haven't scoped anything out yet, but with 3 inches of rain over 3 days, the Brushy trails are probably going to still be pretty wet. I'll try to get out this afternoon and check things out though. In the event that the trails are still too wet, would anybody be interested in heading up to RPR tomorrow morning instead? Although they don't officially open until late afternoon, I've heard that if you call ahead they will let you get started early.
  21. I'm just trying to figure out what will be rideable today or tomorrow. Seems that's been the approach for the past month - just sneak in as many rides as you can with every window of opportunity.
  22. Any updated reports from out there? Also, are they open weekdays?

    Basketball

Huge Rockets fan here. Didn't see the Shanghai game but saw the box score afterwards. First two regular season games are being broadcast on ESPN - Pelicans then Lakers. Still undecided on whether to pick up League Pass this year.
  24. I did the same thing about 6 years ago. Contents from the ruptured disc leaked into my spinal canal and were pressing against a nerve root. I was in excruciating pain for nearly 3 months and couldn't sit for more than a few minutes at a time. I was using a stand-up desk at work, which by the way is exhausting in itself. I was 2 weeks away from having back surgery when suddenly the pain started to diminish. I cancelled the surgery and another MRI showed that the loose matter in my spine had been completely absorbed by my body. Anyway, it was during that time that I learned the importance of maintaining a strong core, and I haven't had any recurrences. It was then too though that I gave up all racquet sports. You can gain and maintain quite a bit of core strength by doing a few simple exercises on the floor without any equipment.
  25. Is that what a decent eBike runs? Guess I was thinking they were higher. Anyway, I still think the penalty of the added weight still outweighs any pedal-assist benefits around here. Said differently, I'd rather have a $6K carbon bike with nice kit than a clunky eBike any day!
