Charlie193
I’m looking at a new bike for my wife, which will be used for mellow trails- easy parts of SATN, green trail at Reimers etc. There are some decent looking sales on Orbea Occam and Rocky Mountain Element and Instinct at the moment. Does anyone have these (I’m looking at the cheaper alloy specs) and if so would they be overkill for mainly green trails? I’m leaning towards more travel than necessary as we won’t be doing long rides so I don’t care much about efficiency, and I think a more plush ride will get us on the trails more. AustinBike
I have an Occam - carbon. This is the best bike I have ever owned. And I have owned a bunch. Maybe it is overkill, but there are times when overkill beats almost enough. Highly recommend it. Also, I have hammered on this one a lot, bought in September of 2019 and it is still going strong. I have broken frames on just about everything else I have owned, except for my Santa Cruz Blur. And I am not a big jump guy, I just ride a ton.
Charlie193
This is a bit old now but thanks for the input @AustinBike. In the end the grey/red color Occam that was on sale in my wife’s size was not approved, so we went with a Liv Intrigue instead. I’m probably more excited than the new owner. Also staying rain free for NBD in South Austin.

June Bug
On the topic of entry level full suspension, interesting review of a Giant Trance 29 entry level full suspension. Detailed review from The Radavist here: Giant Trance 29.2 Teaser: 29” wheels 120 mm rear travel, 130mm front Aluminum frame (full-carbon versions also available) Dual-short-link “Maestro” suspension design UDH hanger Sold through retailers, or consumer-direct 33.8 lbs (XL, no pedals) $2,800 (Currently on sale for $2,200) giant-bicycles.com/trance-29-2 The Trance 29 2 is a mild-tempered trail bike. It’s not a short-travel shredder like the Chromag Darco. And it’s not an XC rocket like the Pivot Mach 4 SL. It’s meant to be efficient enough to cover a lot of ground, and forgiving enough to survive whatever that ground is made of. It’s a do-it-all platform that can appeal to the casual and capable alike. And that’s why it’s a perfect budget full-suspension bike, if such a thing exists.
