RidingAgain
Met someone yesterday who has a budget of $1,500 to spend on an mtb. Has his eye on a new Specialized hardtail, but I told him that his budget may be able to get him a nice used FS instead. Anyone has one they want to sell... I'm thinking a large is what he needs. Thanks. Edited January 28, 2019 by RidingAgain
mack_turtle
Does he want a FS bike? Maybe a hardtail would suit him better. Squish is not for everyone.
RidingAgain
Just suggested an option. He's maybe 5' 10", and touching 200lbs. Just getting into the sport. It's good to have a compete view of what's available. Also, if he really wants a hardtail, $1,500 can get him a really nice... used... hardtail. mack_turtle
Get to Performance Bike on South Lamar before it closes in week or two. For a new rider, at that price point, just about any bike will do the job and be fine for him for at least a year until he starts wearing stuff out or upgrading a lot. A deal at Performance (if they still have anything) will get more bike for the buck but he loses dealer support. A good local shop will help him set up the bike and stick by him with maintenance issues.

Chief
How about one of these? GEO is good FS air front and rear. https://www.diamondback.com/atroz-3
RidingAgain
I think Diamondback has a couple good choices, but the Atroz is a little behind the design curve from what I've read. mack_turtle
Hawk Hill 1 looks like a solid starter bike for someone who is serious about having fun and has the $$.
